Adhiban
Indian Qualifier, rd 1.4, May-8 (2021)
Gruenfeld, modern exchange variation D85)
PGN here chess24.com/en/watch/live-tou...
The Indian Qualifier is a 16-player knockout tournament taking place from 7-10 May 2021 on chess24. The format is the same as for the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour except that there is only one set of matches instead of two. The top 2 qualify for a Tour event.
The matches consist of four Rapid games (15+10). If tied, a 2-game blitz mini-match (5+3) is played and if still tied, an Armageddon game (5 vs 4 with draw odds for Black) decides the winner of the match.

That is a great question but difficult to thoroughly answer because there are too many lines to notate in a comment. In all probability, Adhiban saw Rb1+ but didn't like it. Something to consider in this position, Adhiban is down 6 points of material, but the battle is revolving around a section of the board where he has more activity. Praggu's queen and rook are almost nonexistent in terms of activity. If Adhiban jumps the gun with Rb1+ Kg2 Rxg1+ Rxg1, he wins the queen but is still down two points of material, and the position transforms such that it solves Praggu's problem of his inactive queen and rook, while retaining his active formation with bishop and rook on e3 and d4. From here Black has no good way to keep an advantage and will probably end up losing, or at best eventually drawing the game with perpetual checks on the long diagonal. On the other hand, with the move Rxd4, he keeps certain threats alive such as Rb8 to Rb1, the white queen and rook remain boxed in on g1 and h1, and the best part is that from here, he can still win the queen with his knight, or even deliver checkmate. Meanwhile, white has lost his most active piece on d4 and get this: recapturing with the bishop on d4 is not among the top three moves by the engine. If Rxd4 Bxd4, Black has Qd3+. If Ke1 it will be a quick checkmate by simply bringing the other rook to the party. If Rxd4 Bxd4 Qd3+ Kg2, Black has Nf4+ Kg3 Qxf5 threatening Qh3#, and only after White prevents mate by playing h4, Black will play Ne2+ forking the queen, Kh2 Nxg1 Rxg1 Qf4+ Rg3 blocking and only now Qxd4 winning the bishop. Here Black is up 5 points of material and still generating threats. Again, great question. I used Lichess analysis to look into an answer. In general it's all about holding onto the disparity of activity, keeping threats alive and not cashing in too early.

Why do I feel like the Grunfeld is a terrible opening for white? If you dont play 20 moves of theory you just get crushed as white.

One thing to remember about Praggnanandhaa is that he's only 15. Carlsen didnt start destroying tournaments until he turned 17. It will be interresting to see if Praggnanandhaa matures into a world destroying top player over the next 3 years. Or if he follows Karjakin down the road of "allmost"

8:44 someone please explain why adhiban didn't do rook to b1 check, then white goes rook D1, adhihan takes the rook on D1 with check?? It would have given him the black queen so why didn't he do it?

When we say new position, do we mean new position or new sequence? I imagine sometimes games reach the same positions via different sequences of moves
