👋 *hey there, enjoy this content? consider becoming a channel member:* kzbin.info/door/HdoOrwo__5kf2qXwdyVdwwjoin *My overall recommendation* would be to choose both an "S Tier" browser for your general, non-personal internet browsing (reading the news, posts, anything you don't log in for basically), and an "A Tier" or possibly "B Tier" browser for less frequent, more personal browsing (like banking, social media, etc.). This is because Mullvad/Tor Browser don't save cookies, browsing history, or other site data which makes them a bit inconvenient for sites you regularly log in to. Splitting your browsing habits across two browsers gives you the best of both worlds!

That's how I just found this video. Very thorough and informative; thank you :) I've just downloaded Tor and will be trying it out for awhile to see how we 'get on'. Now for security, yeah sure it is weaker than most, but since it's more obscure, less people will attack it. Addons are still an issue, because Pale Moon will never support WebExtensions, but since you can use old firefox extensions, it may still end up a bit useful Performance is probably the best thing it has going for it, because it will run great even on low end computers, and it will also not eat up your RAM and CPU.

As a Librewolf user, I can't really agree with the criticism you levied against it, or the poor rating. The installer does offer an updater and it can be set to run whenever a user boots. Autoupdates are important, sure, but much more in critical work environments than for single users; all it takes is a bit of self discipline to check for updates once every few days, not the end of the world. While hardened Firefox does offer similar security benefits, it requires extra steps to modify vanilla Firefox that an end user may be unable or simply unwilling to do; Librewolf comes hardned out of the box. Lastly, Librewolf is current in regards to codebase. I used to use Watefox but migrated after its debacle. As you yourself mentioned, WF being based on ESR codebases is a massive demerit, despite its long track record.

The easter egg in the Thorium browswer was a lot more amusing to me than concerning (as easter eggs like that should be). What concerns me about it, was something that also was shown in the XZ utils chain of events. If that easter egg was a problem to the community, and the community was analyzing source code, as they claim happens; they would have raised the issue within hours of it going up. If it were simply an attack on the developer, without any true interest in the easter egg; these community checks could possibly still be occurring. However, the XZ utils backdoor was only found by the eyes a very specialized professional developer -- indicating, a second time, that there are no community eyes on these projects.

@@numcapsscroll Since i commented on this video i've tried many browsers, the one i am using currently is WaterFox with the Simple Tab Groups extension (an essential for most FireFox based browsers tbh), which has been a decent experience so far, i've encountered 0 bugs but it doesn't have automatic tab unloading so it uses A LOT of ram since i open HUNDREDS of tabs at a time. also it has a setting to autohide and show the address bar, bookmark bar, and tab bar on hover, which i really like. A browser i've been wanting to switch to is Zen browser which is also FireFox based and has the same autohide feature as WaterFox, the browser is quite new so it's probably gonna be buggy sometimes, but the only bug i encountered is that when you turn on compact mode (it lets you enable the autohide feature) and also turn on "automatically expand tabs by default" at the same time, if you push your cursor to the left the tab bar appears and disappears continuously, but that can be easily avoided by just not pushing your cursor to the left extreme on your monitor. It has tab unloading, and has some of the features that Simple Tab Groups has but built into the browser and faster (it has workspaces but they dont get backed up into a file daily like the Simple Tab Groups extension), the reason i haven't switched completely and have only been using it on and off is that it has a couple features that i would like to understand how to use before switching to it, but that's just me, you can use it like a normal browser. Chrome got an update which sorts your tabs into groups with AI which i find very convenient but i haven't tested it since it is for people that have an 18+ google account that also live in the USA, if you need chromium then this is the browser you'll get the least bugs on. If you're looking for my recommendation then it is definitely Zen or maybe if you want a more simple and flawless experience then go with WaterFox, Zen, or basically any FireFox based browser with the with the Simple Tab Groups extension. This might have a couple of grammatical or punctuation errors or since it took me a while to type all of this out and i cannot be bothered to reread it and correct it multiple times💀 Also i noticed we're born the same year (08) that's cool lol

Why is Firefox "hardened" marked as a separate browser in tierlists like this? If you have to make such big loopholes under the hood in order for Mozilla's marketing to be true, then that browser does not have good privacy protection. Average people will not deal with such a thing, because it is nerve-wracking in the first place. Considering that, I have no idea how Brave could be in a worse tier list.

Default firefox is like edge in privacy. Bloated, poor anti tracking, no anti fingerprint etc. I would recommend librewolf, zen or waterfox as you said nobody is going to tweak the browser manually or downloading a config file

Palemoon being obscure saved my PC once- I was a young teen and doing a little bit of yarr harring on the side and one of the games I downloaded left every other browser f'd with pop ups, with everything in russian and none of the search engines working- but Palemoon (and its twin Basilisk) were completely unaffected. I think it got way too harsh a rating just for being old coded.

Recently switched from Chrome to Pale moon, I love the Skeuomorphic design of it and speed isn’t that much of an issue, it’s not that slow + i would sacrifice one second for a better GUI and more customizations. I still use chrome sometimes, I still haven’t logged in any accounts of mine in pale moon but once im more familiar and comfortable with it i will. oh also safari isn’t that bad. sure it tracks it’s user (pretty much like most browsers) but using safari is probably the best option if you are on iOS. Better to get tracked by one company than two imo..

@jonaharagon I have always used Firefox (i'm not very educated in the software like you are) but should i use google as the search engine along side Firefox? Do I need to download anything or something different apart form a say a VPN to make my use of Firefox more private? Google as a search engine is not as good as it used to be so i have been using Perplexity AI more often to find useful information. Thanks for making the video.
@ZPixel176 ай бұрын
Hello! I would definitely stay away from Google if privacy is a concern for you. I hadn't heard of Perplexity AI before, it seems interesting but as you probably know, many people are mistrustful towards AI. I mainly use Brave's search engine Brave Search, but I use DuckDuckGo for finding images. If you want a traditional search engine, those two would be my recommendations! As for making Firefox more private (or 'hardening' it), I know there are steps you can take to make it more private, but I just use LibreWolf since it's essentially hardened Firefox out of the gate with less effort, so I can't help you with that unfortunately. Best of luck on your browsing adventures, friend!

Dumb question. Is there a risk to using Opera GX if you only use your PC for gaming? All purchaches are made via steam cards on steam.
@HunterMael8 ай бұрын
I would say unlikely. The privacy trade-offs up to that point are already higher (unless you play offline games exclusively). That being said, as a gamer myself, Opera isn't as good as it seems. My personal recommendation is to pick one of 2 routes, more security/privacy or more convenience. Use one of the S-B tier browsers for your gaming browser, OR take the convenience that comes from edge and co-pilot (this is what I did) that way I can hit the windows key during games and instantly search or instantly use co-pilot to ask a question about the game! Hope this helps.

Great point on the games themselves being a risk. The whole reason I limit my gaming PC, to just gaming.

If your tier criteria was functionality above privacy, your list would literally flip upside down, cmon man, proprietary browsers are not objectively bad by the lack of privacy, Microsoft Edge is one of the most complete and resourceful browsers out there, even though it's sending some of your data to Microsoft, you ranked Vivaldi just above the worst tier because bits of it's source code is closed?
@TheDetonation6 ай бұрын
You really shouldn't be calling it an ultimate tier list if you're basing it purely on security and privacy. There's more to browsers than that, despite how important those aspects are.

Your reaction to thorium is very unjustified and you are spreading misinformation. It is not a dead project. Updated last week, the +-a month of inactivity was due to hospitalization of the main dev. It is relatively up to date, so saying you will get hacked if you use it is absolutely not true. It is more frequently updated than Waterfox and includes some hardening and security tweaks. The furry thing was an easter egg which opened up a furry picture if you specifically did a sequence of actions, leftover from when it was a smaller fork. It was a suggestive picture, but no nudity. While potentially in bad taste, it has since been removed. The “legally questionable pictures” were part of a personal anti-forced-circumcision activism page which were never part of the source code of the browser, but were rather hosted on the repository of the website of thorium instead of on their own private page. This shouldn’t have happened, and the author (being a young individual making mistakes) has apologized for it and has learned from their mistakes. But it wasn’t illegal material.
@jonaharagon10 ай бұрын
lol the latest release (3 weeks ago!) still uses Chromium 121, and everything I said about it was accurate, sorry!
@sanaltdelete10 ай бұрын
@@jonaharagon I’m sorry, you are correct about the last update being 3 weeks ago. I was going off memory, and I should have checked it before I commented. You are not correct about the images of questionable legality being included in the source code of the browser and being distributed though. I think you should be careful accusing people of spreading illegal content. You can ruin someones life with that.

@@jonaharagon it's now updated to v122 , also the whole Drama is sorted, explained, author apologized in blog, nothing project-ending note that the same author makes browser Mercury which is Firefox ESR fork but with some extra fixes (including from hardened FF forks) both Mercury and Thorium have some for-privacy changes, security hardening patches (fixes from newer builds), contains UBO so the bias due to drama made others to overlook that difference/improvements (while it's posted and visible in the code/change-log/website) maybe for next update of the list, introduce also category E so you can spread it more fairly
