The Doomer meme: an uncomfortable truth

The Doomer meme is a version of the "Feels Guy" (also known as the “Wojak” character). He's often drawn as a depressed young man in his early 20s. The Doomer meme resonates with many people in our times. Why? This video explores this question.
The "Doomer" meme expresses a sense of utter hopelessness that a certain sort of person often feels with respect to the state of the world. They often feel unfulfilled in their personal lives. They likely have few or no intimate relationships. They work unsatisfying jobs. They reject most conventional paths for trying to make their lives better. Many people try to dismiss those who identify with the “Doomer worldview” as overly dramatic, but the meme has nevertheless resonated with many people. Why? I believe there are at least two societal trends behind the rise of the Doomer, and I explore each of them in this video:
The decline of traditional religious institutions, and
The rise of philosophical materialism (which I believe is a very disempowering worldview).

Spot on, excellent exposé as usual. To put it in a few imprecise words, we happen to live at an era that is, as René Guénon defined it, the "Reign of Quantity". It's a time of decadence which seems to invariably hit any civilization, unless it is absorbed of course by a bigger one before it gets there. This decadence is born of the capacity of said civilization to provide itself with its own necessities to the point where abundance creates a worshiping of materialism and a division within society (due to the competition to obtain that quantity) that both engender a moral decay. The idea of quantity over quality is more important than it seems at first glance, and yes indeed the sacred ends up vanishing. We may just be at the end of the cycle of multiple cycles, but it's alright, it's meant to be that way. According to my understanding, the purpose of life/the universe/evolution, at least at our level, is the development of consciousness. The latter needs its own challenges (just like in the Journey of the Hero) in order to grow. It may seem odd but recognizing and confronting evil is crucial for the evolution of our consciousness. In this regard, as we've come at a time when perceiving and analyzing evil becomes easier than it's ever been by sharing information without the control of an authority (information traveling peer-to-peer, similar to the early days of the printing press), with an increasing number of people realizing we are manipulated by powerful individuals as well as powerful entities. Surprisingly, for many the shock of learning this is akin to a spiritual awakening as it represents the idea of "piercing the veil", aka taking the red pill, and it also gives meaning again to what were initially aimless lives: a mighty and corrupt enemy that seeks to enslave humanity must be defeated, despite all odds of winning the fight. Due to the use of powerful tools (mainly bread and circus, among others), unfortunately most remain hypnotized. This story, comparable to Plato's Cave, The Matrix and so many others, is archetypal because it's real. To begin that path of seeing the unseen, of understanding how we are controlled and manipulated, one can start with something basic such as finding out about the techniques utilized in marketing to trick us, our decision-making process getting hacked and high-jacked. Then, next stop could be to learn about the banking system and the history of the Federal Reserve. After that, you'll probably have gathered some leads to follow your own trails. Of course, this is a personal opinion and just a tiny sliver of what reality is.

Thanks so much for your comment David! It is always wonderful to hear from voices of earlier generations, especially empathic ones such as yours. I do believe each generation faces its own unique challenges that probably seem insurmountable at the time. Earlier generations faced world wars, and then the Cold War, etc. Each generation also has those who step forward to help improve history for the better. When they do, they form collectives. I do believe this generation also has such individuals. We've always depended on them, and I remain hopeful for humanity. Take care and all the best!

i’ve heard how a lot of people in my generation are depressed and maybe if you’d told my middle school self i would’ve told you to get over it that’s life, but just graduating highschool and starting college, im really starting to understand. The world feels hopeless, nobody wants other people to be happy anymore, they just want to be rude with each other, there’s no more kindness and humanity in people, no more love for you fellow man. Sometimes i go out in public and i feel like i’m not there, everything feels meaningless, like at any moment i’d be better off just walking away and living somewhere in a forest.

This difference in motivation is exactly where most issues occur in the classroom. Everyday, I encounter the problem of kids who can't be bothered completing a task because they are not interested in it. So I always try to modify it by building a bridge to a personal interest of theirs and in an instant, their while attitude changes! Perfect example is the biography unit we just completed. The task required they write a biography about a prime minister... 🙄 The moment the words came out of my mouth I knew I had to change this! The room was silent. "Ummmm, is it just me or does that sound like the most boring topic choice ever?" My class roared with laugher! I explained they had to do a biography but what if I let them choose anyone they liked? Suddenly the room was a filled with excited chatter about who they were going to choose and why. Phew! Needless to say, they enjoyed the task and produced some amazing pieces of work. ❤

Your videos have great content totally relatable! I am living in a converted church apartment. With 13 units, I believe my daughter and I are the only that both find safety and sadness in this. So many converted churches to living spaces and less and less people with faith of any kind. It took a life changing event and a lot of self reflection to get to this head space and away from the everyday noise. We are thankful for the experience and want to share our finds with others in due time and the right platforms. Much of what I found I researched from Pew Research center and articles I could find online, and others from books such as the God Gene by Dr. Dean Hamer. I think the only thing I didn't source was the section on intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation (i.e., the finding that focus on extrinsic goals is correlated with higher depression and anxiety). If you're interested in that topic, there is a good discussion and summary on the research on intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation by psychologist Tim Kasser in his book "the High Price of Materialism." Your analysis of materialism is spot on, the logical step from a materialistic view of the universe to hedonism is very true and something that in my opinion is visibly occurring in Western culture today (living in Western Europe). However, I think pure hedonism is not the salient ideological entailment from a materialistic worldview. I'm a big fan of Epicurus and I think his way of thinking can be instrumental to happiness in our chaotic and consumeristic world: One of the main ideas is that it is not pleasure (Hedone) but 'wellbeing' (Ataraxia) that should be one of life's highest priorities. The exact meaning of Ataraxia is hard to translate but it's a combination of spiritual enlightenment, mental peace and physical health. What's very important here, is that long term wellbeing should always be prioritised over short term pleasure and that other's wellbeing is as important as that of oneself. This idea is also applicable to the society at large. Instead of striving for ever-increasing economic output, we should focus more on the health of communities that societies are composed of and the indivisuals that compose communities, a shift from growth to sustainability. Going back to the individual this means stop trying to grow your experience of pleasure by readily engaging with all sorts of different vices (drugs, gaminbling, pornography). Instead, engage in activities that are conducive to the sustainability of your cognitive and physical health. Once a balance is found in this search, genuine happiness will visit the searcher customarily. In addition to this, I think the greatest happiness a person can possibly achieve is when they've taken a lifetime to build something and are able to reflect on the lasting presence that they've enriched the world with. Reflecting on their struggles and perseverance along their journey to achievement. This achievement can be a family, scientific work, a business or anything that takes considerable amount of effort and is useful to others in some way or form. Civilisation should ideally be structured in a way that facilitates this process and as a beautiful byproduct that civilisation is enriched even further by facilitating the individual's journey to leaving their lasting, positive presence on the world.

Hi bro - again you have raised some very interesting and important philosophical questions in this video. When I was younger I never resonated much with organized religion, for exactly as you said, I found it boring, and though I loved my fellow Christians, I had a strong feeling that it was far removed from the divine, and had become a series of rules and rituals only. I later became agnostic during my medical training since this is the philosophy taught in modern academia and certainly the sciences. It wasn't until my late twenties that I began to be drawn towards spirituality quite seriously. I now believe that every religion describes a certain facet of the supreme creator, hence why now I suppose I am a Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist haha, though it is easier just to say that I serve God, not one particular religion. I think it is very important to have higher spiritual ideals in life, as it gives you direction and strength through the challenges of life that everyone experiences. I think that the lack of true spirituality in modern society has very much left a void and is sadly a reason for much of the societal malaise you described in the earlier part of the vid. I think that this is why work like yours, other spiritual teachers, and all artists who create divinely inspired art is so important - it shines a light into the world and shows that there is so much more beyond mere materialism.

I love the voice acting at the beginning!!! Also love that you've taken your unique, spiritual lens/deep understanding of symbolism and applied it to memes. Was not expecting this and am a huge fan 🤣 This vid made me realize how memes actually give us huge insight into cultural shifts, trends, and grievances. Totally agree about religious institutions leaving a spiritual void in our life. I think one thing that's risen to fill that void is fantasy/sci-fi. If we look at the most successful franchises in history, they all fall into the speculative fiction genre (primarily fantasy/sci-fi), and I think that's because it speaks to that primal part of us that needs myth/symbolism. It's like our modern mythology. Instead of pantheons of Gods, we have superheroes. Problem is, playing World of Warcraft six hours a day doesn't fill our soul in the same way that spiritual experience does ;P It's like eating metaphysical junk food; no wonder we're disenchanted and spiritually sick. I also think it's a shame that science evolved the way it did. It was originally conceived of as a modality for better understanding God's creation. Then, a group of scientists came along and said science and religion ought to be separate (enter the materialist worldview). As a result, we've completely denied the divine underpinnings of life. No wonder the Doomer meme as risen to popularity: we're missing the most meaningful piece of the human experience.

Thanks so much for your very kind comment, Chiara. Once again it means a lot coming from a fellow content creator of your tremendous talents. I actually had no idea what a doomer was until several people left some rather unkind comments on one of my videos, and they all had the same picture of this sad drawing of a man, which led me down the morbidly fascinating rabbit-hole of the doomer. Which I completely agree with you on, and I think it's a modern twist on a very old idea. Also, really love your insight about Sci-Fi/Fantasy serving as a kind of metaphysical junk food, which certainly rings true in my observations. Sci-Fi and fantasy are universally popular among many atheists I've known. If something is "fantasy" then by definition it cannot be real, and so they've pushed spirituality into something that can only exist in fiction, and not in their real waking lives.

This is the first time I have heard of the meme, doomer or the word. It reminded me of a conversation I had recently. A person I have known for all of his life was complaining about having no money. He is 25 & working hard, feeling like he can never get ahead. He asked me how I raised 4 children who always had nice clothes, nice cars, always enough food, vacations to Disney World, Germany, Hawai'i. I was a stay at home mom who home schooled & made custom wedding dresses, taught classes in creative arts. He was very sincere when he asked me how I did it. After taking time to think, I wanted to give him a sincere reply that would help while withholding the appearance of judging. I told him that many things that I never bought, saved me a lot of money. Such as: Bottled water Coffee Cigarettes/ Vape Pens Alcohol Fast food only on rare occasions Cooking from Scratch Making all bread products Growing my own herbs & vegetables (So easy!). When we got to our vacation spot I gave each child a pre-agreed amount of money. Once their money was spent, there wouldn't be any more except for a very rare occasion. This also taught them self control, budgeting, avoiding impulse purchases. They had to weigh the pros & cons to decide if it was really worth it. I kept clear containers, bought the off brand or store item, put it into the clear container, it tasted just as good as the popular brand. They never saw a difference. So, even in todays world, it is still possible to live on one income or for one person to work from home, taking care of children. Also, it takes the "doomer" out of life, the choices are more in a person's control.

Ever since I started taking psychedelics, I have fallen into this mindset. Although I have a slight feeling that something could be controlling the universe (specifically DMT entities), I find it very hard to believe that everything isn't pre determined and we can predict anything to ever happen, even thoughts, if we have all the right formulas and variables to calculate it.

Thought provoking as usual, thanks. But it is important to discuss the racial component of the doomer mindset. "The American Dream" for instance has been discussed recently as historically problematic for many minority groups. Various wars and military campaigns have taken place in non-European locales and have been proven to be unjust, costly and unnecessary. New immigrant groups are outearning older/generational Americans and Europeans in many cases. All of these things injure the image of comfort and hegemony that many people used to rely on in hard times- as a goal or ideal to follow. Because that image is being replaced by a colder and more factual realization of the intricate co-dependencies that all citizens have within their country. This is not a simple "white bread" happy image anymore. It is difficult and stressful for many to consider it all and find a way to still remain proud of their shared histories - especially without relying on the mental crutches of bigotry and racial supremacy.

Stop distracting yourself from misery and learn to live in it. Once you learn to live In it you can learn to live With it. Then once you live With it for a while you begin to get sick and tired of being sick and tired. Thats when you will snap out of it and become Whoever makes You confident and happy. Nobody else can or will do it for you. YOU HAVE TO DO IT FOR YOURSELF.

" if life is fundamentally meaningless, then how do we live our lives while we're here? " the fact that this disturbs people is so incredibly telling that someone has a hero complex. that they need to be special otherwise the astronomical improbability of their existence is "meaningless" , these people kill all joy in life. it is the very fact that everything is " fundamentally meaningless" that MAKES our existence so awe inspiring. IMO people who need to believe in magic are the ones selling themselves short. i.e. the fact that a flower needs to have meaning to be beautiful to someone.... that's deranged. - don't get me wrong; as long as youre not hurting anyone and keep your magic beliefs to yourself there is no problem; everyone needs their coping. working through a nihilistic crisis is the human species' oldest dilemma. some come out with magic gods of the gaps, others don't succeed and fall into the rabbit hole of existential crisis, others become fall prophets or believe they are heros or gods, and others figure out that the world is beautiful regardless of the confines of a "meaning".

Amazing and thought provoking video! I don’t know why KZbin didn’t notify me of your video when I have the bell icon selected. I agree with so much of what you’ve said here. Science has turned into a religion where people use the word without really understanding what it is just to “fit in” or sell something, like political “science’, which is total bs. In a world of science many don’t even practice the scientific method which is based on the foundation of curiosity and an eagerness to understand and connect with the world around us. I’m really curious on psychedelics and so are many others and I think that is our drive to connect with the divine or the universe. It’ll be a long road to legalizing it while drugs / poisons like alcohol are freely available at a walking distance anywhere. The Fantastic fungi documentary has many explaining they’re use of it almost in spiritual terms. What would the world look live if everyone practiced the scientific method to understand the world outside and within, while using fungi to stay connected to the universe?

What philosophers do you read besides Nietzche and Carl Jung. I am familiar with some of these philosopher's work through Mark Manson's work. I am a South African woman going through a spiritual initiation into being a traditional healer. My biggest problem is that my trainor is not educated and I have never believed in the power of prayer and manifestations and that's her teaching style. I am content with learning that but I am a very anxious person. Knowing why I must do things and see them working helps me appease the anxiety Gods, lol. If you don't mind, could you share some of the books you have read on manifestations? My dreams make me more anxious than daily life does. I therefore feel crippled spiritually. Strange enough, I have a BSc degree and am a computer geek. However, I took numbers in their literal sense. I understand psychology but I feel crippled spiritually and being anxious affects my health. I am now reading up on Numerology thanx to you and I have had a few epiphanies already, Thank you for your amazing insights.

Antidote to doomeness: dont wait for your job, your social position, or relationships dictate your purpose. Find a craft a hobby that gives you goals and purpose. If it isnt there create it. Work for it, all the other aspects are secondary. This will help you get smalls win. Ev3ntually it will transfers. Find a sport such as boxing, wrestlimg or something challenging. You will start to build relationships and confidence in uncertainty. Dont waste time the fasster you start the sooner it will pass.

I wouldn’t say the people depicted in the Born Rich documentary are any more depressed or sad than the average person- I’d even argue that they seem much less so. However they are more arrogant and crude than the average person. If we are talking about art and creativity most people are able to do their best work when not worried about making ends meet. Some of the most renowned artists had patreons and ties with the wealthiest families. This whole idea people have that poor people are somehow more human or purer or happier is true in Disney movies only. I also wouldn’t say that hedonism leads to suffering. Not real hedonism, which the majority of people confuse with self destructive behavior, the opposite of hedonism. I’d say hedonism has saved me from unnecessary suffering. I never pursued toxic relationships or toxic substances because I don’t like the way they feel. I prefer to feel good and I feel good when I am ingesting good substances around uplifting people.

" For the young heirs in the film "Born Rich," it's not that their wealth is making them miserable; it's the fact that they're focused on material things. " that is an incredibly bold statement to make. just being focused on material is bad and spiritual fulfillment is the path forward? come on... are you just willfully ignoring the immense social pressure of wealth, keeping up with the joneses, abusive family structure, the vultures that feed on "celebrity" culture? trust fund babies can be some of the most privileged, narcissistic, out of touch people for sure, but this unsupported materialist claim is just a narrative to feed into your path about "spiritual fulfillment". it's a bad narrative and low hanging fruit. it wasnt even a social commentary about how capitalism convinces society to reduce everything to a commodity instead of finding awe in the precious relationships we have to others, our community, their efforts, and nature as a whole. . it is capitalism that stamps "meaning" on to everything.... in capitalism it is simply called "value" though, it is one and the same though.

I think people are leaving Christianity, such as those who have deconstructed, largely because more information is available today than ever before, and they see the overwhelming complications of the Bible being inspired and inerrant and infallible. All biblical scholars have a bias whether they are secular or religious and it shows. However, there are issues that are largely agreed-upon by both sides, and not to mention many a philosophical issue that arise from inter-textual inconsistencies and contradictions, as well as the presence of polemics as well as counter narratives within the text.
