Fun fact I learned from Kurtis Connor: Fushigi’s can cause house fires if left in direct sunlight and have. Perfect kids toy
@markconigliaro Жыл бұрын
Not exactly, the chrome ball was put in the middle specifically to prevent fires. Fushigi is just a (bad) ball used for contact juggling. Regular contact juggling balls are 100% acrylic, and those WILL cause fires when left in sunlight as they act as a big magnifying glass. But the chrome ball in a fushigi stops that magnifying effect. Source: the guy who made fushigi came to our contact juggling forums and asked for our opinion on the idea. We said it was good with the ONE condition being that the ball is perfectly centered, or else it will wobble and throw off the illusion. Guess what, the biggest problem with fushigi is the ball isn't perfectly centered.

Silly Bands weren't a scam, per se - they were just a fun application of the new development of complex shape-memory polymers which was kind of a big deal in the materials industry at the time. They were self-healing and the application extends well beyond rubber bands that stretch and return to their pre-stretched shape, namely medical devices and soft tissue scaffolds. I was in college getting my engineering degree when they were released so I didn't see how they were used in middle schools, but as a proof-of-concept application, they were actually ingenious. That's why they were featured in the MOMA store, and rightfully so. They didn't over-promise and under-deliver anything like the other products you featured. Just food for thought!
@anyu Жыл бұрын
That's really interesting! I didn't think about that side of it, a consumer product based off actually useful leaps in technology.
@MSmithNYC Жыл бұрын
@@anyu Yeah! Think of any widely available materials prior to them that could be deformed so dramatically and return to their original shape. Materials with that much elastic memory didn't really exist beyond rubber bands. And the reason those are circles is so that the stress and strain on the material is applied uniformly across the shape. To create a polymer that returns to a desired shape without the stress and strain on each of the little "joints" or locations where you would normally anticipate non-uniform deformation was leaps forward for material science and has wide ranging applications in biomedical, aerospace, robotics, and other industries. I think a testament to their proof-of-concept is that so many people here still have these little fun gum bands that still retain their shape to this day. Fun stuff!
@sakuraryuji01 Жыл бұрын
I would also argue this with Flex seal and Oxyclean. Like I think people forgot those were indeed good products that started as standard as seen on tv junk but these products are few and far between that they had actual practical application that they are still used. Silly Bands came out when I was in late elementary school. There were kids whose entire arms were covered in bands, and when the Sun came out, all the kids who had one would wear it as a choker as a trophy for having such an ultra rare rubber band. It was the only fad or trend I ever participated in, and that I was "allowed" to participate in (I was the weird kid so people actually trading w me was HUGE), so Silly Bands hold a special place in my heart lol

Put the tray into a cold oven, and start a timer for 14 minutes. Heat the oven to 425. 3. After taking the tray out, transfer bacon to paper towel-lined plates, and let cool for about five minutes to crisp. RIP to the bacon cooker :(

If there is something that BulbHead advertises on TV, I will wait for Wal-Mart or Walgreens to get it that way I do not lose any money. sometime in 2000s, there was this commerical about a flying saucer tower that could hover from your hands, like your bending air or whatever, but when i bought it, it was literally just a string you attach to your ear and swing around. that wasnt mentioned in the commercial and you couldnt even do the tricks they were showing. i threw a tantrum 😭

Okay.. But I had a dog who freaking LOVED her Fushigi ball 😂

When I was younger Fushigi actually used to look so damn cool, but now if you pay attention to it real closely, you can see a metal ball inside of a plastic one 💀

Throwback to me wearing my moon shoes around the house for hours at a time but never ever jumping in them because I was scared

Hey don't knock silly bands, I drank a carton of rotten chocolate milk mixed with a Capri-Sun, apple juice, and orange juice at school lunch to get a Perry the Platypus silly band.

I wasn’t into silly bands until my brothers coach gave me some. Then I got most of mine from peoples least favorite or lost. I only bought a few.

Oh god those power bands...went to a huge football HS and all the jocks had them like they were freaking medals and hassled any athletes without them, even then the rest of us knew they were a scam 😂

Yeah, I also fell into the demographic of kids who wanted the moon shoes, but my mom is a nurse at a pediatricians office and decided immediately upon seeing the commercial that I had already had my fair share of broken bones and didn’t need another one.

God I miss watching my silly little shows on The Hub before one of those "As seen on tv" product commercials come on Like that cup that also functioned as a no spill bowl for snacks And my personal favorite, the clap on clap off light
@jackreiter7291 Жыл бұрын
And then there’s Nickelodeon’s Gak Gak Gak. Literally every commercial in that one break was just Gak. It’s archived and it’s as bizarre as you’d expect.

Great video, however I was devastated at the end to find out the effects were all fake. I will let it slide this time, but next time it better all be real.

My first experience with social rejection was when everyone in my third grade class had silly bands. Everyone except for me, I had no idea what they were. The habit of forking over money for something useless just to fit in persists to this day, like when I’m the only person in the twitch chat without a cool symbol next to my name

I forgot about most of these! Didn't have most of them either. Thank God I wasn't allowed to have moon shoes lol

i always got infomercials for a wubble bubble ball and i remember actually SEEING one in the flesh like 7 years later just to watch it last literally 3 minutes before deflating and causing a group of 5 small children in the park to cry

I wanted so many of those lmao. I’m glad my parents refused to let me get those moon shoes though because I would’ve definitely hurt myself 😭. I also collected the silly bands and I found a Barbie tin case full of them a couple of months ago. I remember being obsessed with the glow in the dark ones and now that I think about it I kind of want to make them a thing again
