The dalmation thing is another interesting facet of history. They were bred to be fast and strong runners, so in the old day when there were still horse drawn carriages for the fire department, the dogs would run ahead of the horses and clear the streets so the fire department would get there faster. That's why they are mascots for the fire department to this day.

If anyone was wondering, the reason that Dalmatians (polka-dot dogs) are commonly associated with fire departments and firefighters dates back to the 1800s, when firefighters used horse-drawn carriages to transport themselves and their equipment. Dalmatians often accompanied these firefighter carriages to help keep the horses on track, and also to guide other carriages off of the road so that the firefighters’ carriage didn’t collide with another persons carriage. They also often served as guard dogs at fire stations, and this has helped reinforce the connection between Dalmatians and firefighting.

When I was in kindergarten, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I said a fireman. And she said "oh that's dangerous work you know, putting out fires". And so I said "no I don't want to be that kind of fireman, I want to be the kind of fireman that sets things on fire." So she said "No, no, no, that's not right. That's called an arsonist. The word for that is arsonist, not fireman. A fireman puts out fires." So from then on until first grade, when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I said an arsonist. But for some reason, my first grade teacher didn't like that answer either and then had a conference with my parents. My kindergarten teacher was cool though, she taught me the word arsonist.

I wasn't going to binge watch Ryan's videos, but then I did and now I can't wait for the next product of his fertile imagination. This is the best comedy I've run across in years if not decades. My favorite genres of his videos are "The First Guy Who ..." and "The Guys Who Decide Things". He deserves every bit of his success. Long may it continue!

Welcome to the Ryanverse! 😊 It may or may not be the happiest place one Earth … but it definitely has the smallest gene pool. 🤣

@@ellariel7457 Thank you. His videos kept appearing in the "suggestions" and I thought they'd be corny so it took me a long time to watch the first one. After that, I was hooked. There are so many good things about them, especially the writing and acting and the technical skill involved with the green screen work and the cutting is just amazing.

@@andiward7068 Thank you for the reply. Actually, that was part of my binge watching, which I've already done. They're very good, of course, and they got better over time, but I like the two genres I mentioned best. Ryan deserves hazard pay for watching all those terrible movies and figuring out all the plot holes. And it's amazing that it make sense to talk about different "genres" when it's one man with about a zero budget and one camera and a green screen in his basement!

Just a PSA: don't count on firemen to get your cats out of trees. They generally try not to occupy themselves with tasks that make it difficult for them to... you know, respond to fires. Cats stuck in trees can usually get down on their own given enough time. If your cat does need help getting down or is in some kind of danger, you'd be better off contacting animal control, your local shelter, or even a tree care service. EDIT: point of clarification, rescuing a cat from a tree is dangerous. If the cat panics and starts struggling, it can cause you to fall from the tree or the ladder. If you do decide to try it yourself, at least take some precautions and have someone nearby in case you fall. In general, however, it's probably safer to get professional help.

@@legrandliseurtri7495 I've heard it's actually dangerous to try and extract a cat from a tree without training. If the cat panics and struggles against you while you're trying to climb down, you could either get stuck yourself or fall off. It's a job best left to the pros.

In case you're wondering why they chose dalmatians - it's because they were good with horses as well as having a genetic mutation that makes most of them partially or completely deaf. So loud noises like sirens or people screaming didn't scare them. Them being calm kept the horses calm as well (or so I've read). Pretty cool though.

I once asked a firefighter whether they actually do the cat thing, and he replied that no, cats always came down on their own eventually, or - and I quote: "Have you ever seen a cat skeleton on a tree?" :-D

Ah, I always respected the Firefighter, risking their life to rescue a gerbil, saving memories and homes. I recall a story about how one firefighter got killed by someone out to kill a hero, and when the higher ups wanted to increase safety protocols for firefighter safety, the firefighters themselves said "nah, I'd rather risk it, this will slow our response times." or something along those lines.
