Maybe the New Testament. Ever thought of that? 👇🏻 1 Corinthians 11:14 (KJV) 14 “Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?” But I honestly don’t follow the New Testament because it’s a whole lie. It’s the literal Abomination of Desolation. I was just giving you an example of why people might’ve been saying that long hair on men is more feminine. When that’s not the case. Even ancient warriors had long hair. Specifically the Spartans. It was said that a man with long hair is more beautiful than an ugly man with long hair. It just depends on how the guy looks if he takes care of himself or not.
@possibleproblem4794 жыл бұрын
I wonder where we got this idea about long hair being strictly feminine. all through history it’s always been a unisex/masculine thing
@cosmos3753 Жыл бұрын
Human evolution. It's the combination of long hair and beard that makes the difference. Individual with short/no hair + full beard = more masculine (and old) Individual with long hair + full beard = more masculine (and young) Individual with long hair + short/no beard = more feminine. Individual with short hair + short/no beard = more like a youngster Of course there are cultural characteristics that each person carries that can affect these correspondences.
@bickyboo7789 Жыл бұрын
I think it's partly because of militaries enforcing shorter hair as it's easy for an attacker to grab your longer hair or beards in close quarters combat.

My first boyfriend had long hair (it was actually his long rocker hair that initially attracted me to him. 😍) But then it was the 70s/80s rock-n-roll era. Back then, I thought guys with short hair looked boring. Of course, now, I am less biased, yet I still love a healthy mane on a man ... and I miss those long big puffy hair from the 70s.
@StrappingYoungLadam4 жыл бұрын
I think personally we've reached a point where hair isn't as much as a thought about thing style wise. You see throughout these different eras everyone within the same culture looked very similar to one another. Whether it was the long hair of the past or the conservative barber shop cuts of the early to mid 1900s. Today, at least in the western world, it's very much a "just do you" kind've thing.
@RohannvanRensburg3 жыл бұрын
I've even noticed this when it comes to i.e. employment. In the 90s you likely would have been judged or discriminated against for having long hair as a dude but as long as whatever you do is neat and presentable there aren't really issues like this as commonly in the West.

19:20 Contrary to popular belief, Charlemagne, according to his contemporaries, sported shoulder length hair and a groomed long stache, mostly due to the fact that early Carolingians considered beards a somewhat barbaric and peasant trait. There's a surprisingly enormous amount of historical materials devoted to this particular subject, actually. 'Charlemagne's Mustache: And Other Cultural Clusters of a Dark Age' in particular is a well written in-depth study on how early medieval Europe's fashion looked like

Hey Trav, loved the video. Interesting to see how many societies pre-modern period had men with long hair, only really in the past 100 or so years has long hair been considered feminine (in Western culture at least). Other factors I believe that contributed to this are the increase in the number of men working in an office or white-collar job, where the expectation to look presentable and neat became more important. Another being the improvement of personal grooming tools; similar to how the safety razor made it easier for men to be clean shaven and make facial hair unfashionable.

And in the roman and Egipt empire all the slaves must shave their hair, And i ask in internet why they use to do that, but i find from a old native american men very inteligent with a long hair, that short hair makes you docile and easier to follow orders, and long hair is very important, not like in school tells you that the hair are dead cells. The native american have long hair becouse that conect them whit nature and plants, and serch the history of natives in the vietnam war and you are going to see that is like a "Sixth Sense" for humans. Spartans would shave their heads and beards (and their horses manes) when defeated in battle. The length of their hair was an outward sign of their prowess. I've heard that the samurai "half-moon" haircut was enforced on younger men by their older, balding superiors, who didn't want to feel self-conscious :)

As a Muslim you were right. Our prophet Mohamed (PBUH) was having long hair & long beard ofc until he do Hajj (he cut his hair, not his beard). And he told us to keep our hair clean from dust and all that and that anyone who has long hair should take care of it. He even told us to dye our hair another color than black or white (for people who have gray hair). Except in war, our prophet's companions/warriors grow their hair & beard & dye it black as well. But ofc there is a BUT growing hair in Islam depends on the culture & habits of your society as well as the intention of growing your hair. for example if you want to grow your hair to look like a girl it's forbidden then. and it's forbidden to do girls' haircuts & stylings. Our prophet (PBUH) was tieing his hair in a ponytail because it was normal for men to do it in their society. In your society, it may or may not. The same goes for girls.

Fascinating! Thanks so much, l've worn my hair long off and on since the '90s, l usually keep it pulled back in a ponytail. Gone are the days of my flowing, luxurious chestnut brown locks. My hair has thinned out substantially, but l still keep it past shoulder length. I can't say l was motivated by anything like trying to make a statement, but since l was very young l always preferred my hair long (my parents felt otherwise). I actually have Native American in my ancestry (my paternal great grandmother was Native American) so maybe that's why? Either way your historical excursion is illuminating and very enjoyable to view! I've always been curious about the customs for men's hair, and it seems like long hair was really more the rule than the exception. I especially like the last point you made about how the military has been a strong driver of men's fashions in this culture: My paternal grandfather and my father were both military, it certainly profoundly influenced probably on unconscious levels their choice of hair style, mostly short and conventional from the '40s in the case of my grandfather and the conservative 'Madmen' look in the '60s in the case of my father. But when the counterculture started kicking in my Dad flirted with beard growth, and eventually just settled on a mustache which he kept throughout the rest of his life. I could never really grow facial hair and I never really wanted to, but I always had this almost visceral urge to grow my hair long.

I had been meaning to look into this subject for a while. Very interesting to hear about the shift from long to short and now back. I know many young men who were told by older family members that they need to cut their hair, so it's great to have some background on the subject now. Folk can wear their hair however they like, I just find tons of power in my length. Also I can attest to the Native American thought of Spirit being connected to their hair. I feel that the eras of my life where I've been most connected with nature and my own power are when the patches in my beard have filled in and when my moustache finally appeared. Great job, man!

Well, I'm no stranger to the land of scoff. Perhaps you'd like to explain to me why it is that every major battle in history has been won by the side with the shortest haircut. Think about it! Why did the US cavalry beat the Indian nation? Short back and sides versus girly-hippie locks. The Cavaliers and the Roundheads, 1-0 to the pudding-basins. Vietnam, crew-cuts both sides, no score draw.

I can’t get enough of long hair on men. Curly, wavy, textured hair shoulder length, my favorite, I’m so attracted to it and wanna play with it all day!

I would also recommend that you should the article that if you search Untangling the history long hair. The article goes on to say how mean wore long hair as a symbol of masculinity and beauty during the Greek times, but when the rich a powerful come into play, they started cutting long hair off of them and shaming them for having long hair. They wanted them weaker and more submissive, and it continues into this culture as well with the military, shaving men's heads a symbol of the weak and slavery. Even now men who wear long hair in our society get frowed upon, especially in the work environment. You may think it's a policy thing for safety, but in my own opinion, I believe it is an ongoing effort to ridicule men with long hair, because in a sense we are all still slaves to an ever-crumbling society.
