A lot of the hate for Terra boiled down to ship hate (BB/Rae was a very popular ship at the time; in fact, its popularity with cartoon fans was probably the biggest reason later media made it happen) given a justification ("see, we told you she was evil"). The original comic Terra (in the arc they were adapting; later portrayals were more sympathetic) was selfish and awful to everyone around her because she was playing off audience expectations that she must be cute and harmless so it didn't matter how mean she was, but cartoon Terra was never that. She deserved better from fans.

I do feel bad for her. Her brother was naturally gifted with powers while she tried desperately to be good but she had difficulty controlling it. As I got older, she needed a friend and guided. While being naive and innocent Slade groomed her to be his weapon to befriend the Titans and take them down. Seeing as how the Titans did still treat her like not only a friend but a fellow Titan, changed her perception of them and she made the Ultimate sacrifice

This! I feel the same way. While, I don't really agree with some of Terra's choices, but I do like her and feel bad for her. I think it's also implied that her parents are gone if I can recall. Does anyone know if Terra's parents were mentioned in the show? Please let me know.

No but in the Teen Titans Go Comics her brother goes looking for her and Robin tells her about her life after she left the palace. She shows her life as a civilian and he's happy that she's happy and leaves

I read Terra was created as response to characters like Xmen's Kitty Pride, or Batman's Robins, and how heroes just accept any lost child that they meet. So Terra was meant to say "why if the person you don't know and just invited into your home was actually bad". The comic version was just a traitor for the sake of being a traitor. And the Slade thing... just gross. The 2003 show rewrote her into a much more interesting character dealing with her own mental issues (which we can all get behind lol) We all dislike characters acting unreasonable for the sake of drama in a story, but Terra was done really well. Anxiety, worry, lies and trust were pretty good. To me Beast Boy is the weakest character in the show, but his arc with Terra has my favorite moments. And yeah, Robin did bad things intentionally, while Terra was a lost freaked out girl who spiraled down when she lost everyone. I haven't seen that much hate for her, I think she's my favorite part of the show, but she definitely doesn't deserve the hate. Also... she's a child

I don't think of Terra as a "villain" necessarily either. She was basically groomed by Slade thinking he'd help her control her powers an everything basically stemmed down from her fear of herself and her insecurities. All the bad things Terra did were influenced by Slade and sacrificing herself just made it even more evident that she really didn't want what was happening. The wiki does a great job at summarizing her unfortunate circumstances. Part of the reason why I loved Terra even back then was because I could tell she was just a girl who needed help. She needed someone to care for her the way she needed and help her overcome her fear of herself and what she can do.

The last episode WAS Terra canonically afaik. I think there was a comic that had Beast Boy get Geoforce/Brion (Terra's brother), drag him to outside the school and Brion immediately recognizes her from a distance and tells BB that she seems happy and to leave her alone.

In the end it was her she was just glad her powers were gone and didn't want to remember her life as a former princess, former warrior, former villain . She wanted a new start and a clean slate and she got it

She was always my favorite character. I liked her powers and I found her issues relatable back when I was in "gifted kidland" struggling with my self-worth and if I could really live up to my "potential" as a "gifted" kid.

You are so real for calling out that beast boy oversteps his bounds rewatching Teen titans 2003 as an adult made me feel nuts cause people think BB and raven are cute but he just insults her or overstepps her boundaries & she gets mad like its not cute ;o; for terra i was always surprised when i found out she got hate I never disliked her & thought people liked her the same as any TT girl that said watching as an adult took everything in me to not reach through the screen and get slade that poor girl was being Groomed her whole story line was tragic

I know for me, the massive thing that got on my nerves on Terra was how she really acted like the Titans betrayed her when she done them dirty first. But you do have a point. Hurt people hurt people. And we all know Slade is a totally slimball who got into her head and made her think she can't rely on anyone else but him. I completely agree with your points! I was never necessarily on the Terra hate train, but I did have my reservations toward her as a person mainly due to her self-sacrifice being the one huge gesture that allowed the Titans to forgive her, I really needed to see more complex emotions being displayed toward her betray and sudden switch back to good. If they continued the series I would have liked to see the Titans gain true closure with her (since her last appearance in school)---mainly with Raven because I felt their connection about their doubts and worries about controlling their powers felt deeper and more raw than even her relationship with Beast Boy. However, I also wrestle with the fact that if Terra was anything other than white, I am unsure if we would all collectively give her grace as community in 2023. I think of Amber Bennett from Invincible and Grace Monroe from Infinity Train, both of which caught major heat for being antagonists and "toxic" (I use this loosely for Amber), which I think stem from being Black women. Other than that I think this video was well articulated and explained misogyny in fandom spaces!

I thought Terra was just some teenager that was left to live on her own because of her powers and she met up with the Teen Titans. She assumed Beast Boy tattled on her about her secret of not being able to control her powers because of something Robin saying. She then turned to Slade afterwards.

Funfact: If the fandom liked BB? Then they wouldn't like how Raven treats him. Using her powers just because she's frustrated at him. Terra wanted to be with BB but was taught to be a weapon from Slade. Raven is just hateful to everyone and treats everyone horrible. Terra was nice and felt embarrassed that they figured out her struggles.

This makes me wonder how people would react if the show came out today. I can imagine the anti-woke mob that cry whenever there's a woman in a blockbuster movie would lose their mind every time Raven was rude to BB and claim it's an attack on men. ...Then again they would also probably complain that Terra is too strong... Also the other titans seem wishy washy when it comes to Terra. Terra may have been an evil jerk at the moment but she was right to call Raven out for claiming but she knew she was a liar like basically Raven saying the others were dumb to trust her when she was only shown expressing her concerns about Terra towards Robin only and even after they agreed no more chances for her Starfire was still showing her sympathy pointing out she seemed scared when she left the battle even though that doesn't necessarily mean she's remorseful for almost killing them and Robin who said he didn't care how she felt because regardless she was a dangerous criminal who needed to be stopped still paid respects when she was turned into a statue and before that encouraged turn off to kill beast boy. It's like they'll always like terra no matter what she does.

I didn't like terra because of how ungrateful she acted towards the titans after going full villain in my opinion she was a real unbearable jerk as a villain. Insulting the Titans in combat taking advantage of their hesitation to hurt her because she was their old teammate and outright telling Robin she hates them because they were born and that she wanted to go played and calling them pathetic when they've been nothing but nice to her and willing to give her a second chance. And I'm just thinking she did all of that because beast boy angrily told her she didn't have any friends after learning her betrayal which you can't blame him for.
