Honestly, gives me vibes of when transphobes get pissy about "having to change their language", which I wasn't around or at least a fully sentient being in the early 2000s, seeing as I was born 2003, so like, this is something I find really interesting. When Carmen raised her voice at Rose I physically flinched. Like let’s not beat around the bush here, that’s verbal abuse. As a parent you just do not scream expletives at your child. Every time Rose talks to her mom it feels like she’s picking her words super carefully walking on eggshells so she doesn’t get screamed at or guilt tripped or dragged into an exhausting argument. I lived in that exact situation and it’s caused me serious lasting issues. Also important: if Carmen acts like this while she knows she’s on camera, what do you think she does when no one’s filming.
@HoodieHorizon

Yeah and you know that rose probably didn't even want to do this but her family def pressured/guilted her into being a part of the show. Like her parents were just interested in the fetishization/ "I can say slurs now" part while rose was like "I might as well just try to learn what I can I guess"

To me, it's more gross fetishization than dehumanizing. "Beautiful creature" is an innocuous phrase that's often been used by someone admiring the beauty of another. Essentially this is just the whities admiring their "beautiful black skin" which does definitely feel weird and gross, but the focus on the word creature does seem like a mistake. And yeah I get that there's a history of dehumanization there, but in this case i think they objected to the wrong part. Also, I don't understand why it seems like they've never interacted with black people. The white family is insane.

Honestly Carmen's tantrum is the most frustrating thing to me. She starts the show all "I'm gonna Become Black and learn the True Black Experience 😇 This is Learning and Growth 😇" but she refuses to acknowledge when she's wrong! She doesn't listen to criticism from anyone- from the other family, from her own daughter, and she BARELY listens to that chick she befriends later too...
@sleepysera
@sleepysera Жыл бұрын
She clearly sees herself as a trailblazer of interracial understanding, as someone so open and forward-thinking, and "not like those other white people who can't see the value in other races". Therefore the idea that she actually fails too sometimes and unconsciously falls into the same thought patterns and behaviour as the people she looks down on is unbearable to her, and instead of thinking about WHY black people tell her that some stuff she does or says isn't okay, she considers them ungrateful for not appreciating her being "better" than the average racist. It's literally ALL about her.

@Oz I empathize completely. From a young age I had to mask constantly because my mother didn't want me "on the short bus" and it seriously impeded my educational and personal growth. Not only that but she's white and I'm not so I had to deal with the "I'm not racist I have a brown child" BS, too. But I'm happy to say that she's improved these past few years because me and my siblings have gained the courage to stand up to her and call her out. She still tries to pretend that she wasn't that bad, but I can also tell she's slowly taking what we say to heart. She has even asked for advice on how to communicate with ND people for her work as a nurse. I recognize that I'm lucky enough to have a parent who's willing to listen and change but I hope, someday, your mother will learn too. But if she has failed you too many times then I hope you cut her off because you deserve better.

That doesnt make it right or good, but man at least 30-some years of living under and then unraveling the generational trauma I have has helped me speak karen, for better or for worse :| I wish they had an actual therapist (Not a "race expert" wtf is that) mediating, in part so that the black folks didnt have to do the emotional labor of teaching carmen the basics of race relations. and whats more upsetting about this is that its clearly not a thing of "the past was bad," because this was a major issue during the BLM protests a few summers back. I appreciate that both Jordan and Jarvis were never afraid of calling out Rose's tone-deafness (while still giving her some slack because she was a minor). In the last videos, there were a ton of people defending her and wanting to think she was this woke child that's completely separated from her parents, but that's the image people wanted to make of her and not the reality, which is more complicated. At the end of the day, we do absorb a lot of what our parents teach us, and Jarvis and Jordan pointing out her flaws made me not surprised when she made that awful comment about Nick.

It's entirely because both Carmen and those men objectify black people/women and do not view them as people, but something that can give them something. For the men it's sex, and for Carmen it's their worship to make her feel better and more powerful. In both cases they believe they are entitled to it, so when those groups turn out to be actual people with autonomy they become enraged. Another way to put it is nice guys will be nice to women without actually respecting them and then expect sex. tbh rose's stance is 100% understandable coming from someone who is used to having to diffuse that kind of bomb that was absolutely a calculated choice of words designed in the hopes of _not_ setting off her mother, it was the most lukewarm of lukewarm takes before stepping over onto her side, and her mother _still_ blew up at her. like how much worse would it have been if rose _blatently_ disagreed with her? i think people looking at rose and going "why didnt you say anything/speak against her?" should really have a better understanding of how it is to grow up in a house where you have to couch everything you say with as many layers of padding as possible, in order to not be immediately yelled at or forced into an unwanted argument rose should be held to account for her own actions, but blaming her for something that is clearly a learned behaviour in order to not be verbally attacked is a bit harsh

It never stopped me from speaking my mind and saying my parents were wrong, just stopped me from saying it in front of them. What would have been a smart move is to not have said anything at all because naturally her mom would have yelled at her unless she 100% agreed. @@ms.tatortots5419 tbh there is no smart move. there isnt an express right or wrong way here. a child is not responsible for disciplining a parent if she doesnt say anything, her mum will assume she's agreeing, so will the other family, and so will the people watching. she's already being shredded because she didnt "say enough" i did the same thing as her many times, because you get lulled into this sense of "maybe this time is different?" or "if i just work my way up i can talk them into it?". then they snap and you retreat until things settle down and the cycle begins again people react differently to abuse, and labelling it as smart or not is just unkind to the victim and irrelevent to whats happening, abusers find a way and a target, pointing at the victim and telling them to change does nothing but blame them for their own abuse

In the comment section of the first video, there were people defending the show by arguing that it’s fake and everyone are paid actors, so therefore it isn’t racist. To that I say, it is still racist. Black face originated from PAID WHITE ACTORS doing black face for entertainment purposes. These were called minstrel shows and they were created to mock or negatively stereotype black people. Amos and Andy was a famous minstrel show on tv and we can all agree that what they did was wrong. Then apply that to Black White. To me Black White feels like watching the behind the scenes of a minstrel show with the white actors trying to get into their “role”. You cannot defend the show with the “it’s satyr” or “they’re paid actors” when the origins of black face started with paid white actors satirizing black people. Edit: I’ve been meaning to get to this video but the experience of the first one was so awful I’ve been avoiding it. But I’m ready for Bruno (kinda) and his idiocy (not really).

God poor Rose, this show is the perfect depiction of how racism is taught. Like even “both sides-ing” racism is too frustrating for her mom. Also proving why a lot of the time intent is irrelevant. When you accidentally knock over someone’s drink, you still apologize even if you didn’t mean to.

Rose, unfortunately and disappointingly, was considered the only entity Carmen could attack in that moment. She couldn't talk to anyone else she was frustrated with in that tone and energy without consequences. Bruno clearly saw no issue with his wife and thought everyone else was overreacting. And the other family were a united front so she'd have been shut down quick if not aggressively depending whom she specifically addressed with the problematic tone. Ironically, Bruno and Carmen are arguing for Carmen's "intent" but neither gets that the other family addressing the wording *specifically* meant that they *did* assume benign intent and are telling her that the intent behind her words are obscured by the delivery. If they assumed she *wanted* to be racist, then like The J's said, they'd be attacking her personality and the foundational message directly.

I feel like she must've learned the truth about Carmen for real off-screen, and then they filmed like, a reenactment of the moment afterwards. No way we can know for sure, obviously, but that's the vibe I'm getting. Either that or they cut out a LOT, because I just can't believe Diana would've actually taken it all in stride and bounced back _that_ quickly. Plus something about the whole "Yeah I'm waiting for Carmen, and YOU SURE AS HELL AREN'T HER, HAHAHA..." feels kinda. Y'know. Staged. So either they revealed the truth to her already, or she was never fooled at all and guessed what was coming by that point.

I think that her ego strength is low and, rather than face and feel her own guilt, her reaction and rationalization is a defense mechanism to avoid that emotion. It's unfortunate because in situations like these, sometimes the person who felt hurt to begin with ends up feeling invalidated in their hurt--so much so that they may even feel compelled to comfort or cater to the person who they felt hurt by.
