As a biomed 1 I tried to apply myself and learn as much as I could , while a tech 1 I obtained certifications for the Baxter prismaflex, spectra optia , zoll defibs and draeger anesthesia. I have become a BMET 2 making about $75k-$80 a year , work hard and push through , it can be a very rewarding career !

Thank you so much for touching on this! I’ve been a Biomed 1 for almost two years now and I am NOT confident in my technical skills AT ALL. You are absolutely correct about churning out work orders because that has been my life for the past two years! Now because of time and my CBET, I’m being promoted to BMET2 and we’re hiring for a BMET 1 and for the past 3 weeks I’ve been worrying about their training. From my own experience, I think it’s damaging to throw a BMET1 into the churning out work orders phase because there’s no real professional development! I would LOVE to practice my soldering skills to make me a better technician because the last time I soldered anything was almost 8 years ago when I learned it in school! With so many Biomeds leaving, we can’t afford to throw our biomed 1s away like that. These are the people who will take over when we’re done! What does that say about the future of the industry??? I couldn't agree more. The BMET1 is the starting point of our future. If we want them to succeed, we have to set them off right. We are setting the course of our future in motion with them. With fewer schools producing fewer biomeds, our goal is to help them help us.

Been there. One thing I loved was the mentorship I got. But I remember getting paid based on our hospital contract. School responsibilities, on call, and working projects whenever my coworker or my management was out of town which was every other week. I remember the company having to fly directors from other states to supervise me due to the nature of my situation. Should have seen the look on the hospital's C-Suite's faces when they found out I wasn't supposed to be working full-time but I was banking in the hours to get the work done lol "We didn't even know" 😂

Good points, I wrote repeated memos. We had a director of maintenance, one of the several iterations of supervision, who thought Biomeds were electricians. He found out differently when 6 of 16 left in a few months. 1M in training walked out the door. One aspect of memos is protection against accusation when things go wrong.

I've been a biomed for 5 years now, the first 2 years I was in a shop of old timers who did component level repairs. The new hospital I'm in is all board level repairs, literally told not to troubleshoot components and just buy a new complete part. It made things "easier" but took all the fun out of it...

There's health safety in replacing boards as opposed to resoldering or reworking them, med eqpt tend to be finicky & throw random errors, tight tolerance range you don't wanna mess.

I hear you. I have a director who only wants to see a spreadsheet of numbers cranked out each day. But when it comes to the proper sealing and quality check of the device, it just falls back on the tech. And you're right. managers just want to see numbers.

I work on a variety of stuff, from bed pressure units, to ventilators. I think that it's important that a new Biomed learns every possible unit that is in the shop. I'm glad that I don't work in a hospital (though the benefits and pay are probably better..lol), because I get to work on a variety of stuff.

You're raising your standards No shame in that. I was trained at the component level, been greatful for that. "Troubleshoot resistors for 4 months straight", basic training for any electronics technicians. It teaches you discipline but also introduces them to what electricity is. I am reading up on my medical terminology.

@Aaron Smith Aaron, you are not allowed to work on life support without OEM training - which I am sure you know. You can and should use that as a reason to push back on those responsibilities. If anything, if you really wanted training, get quotes for a year service contract vs cost of training and be sure you have the manpower to assume those roles.

Great video I was that biomed one at a small hospital with only a two-man shop they put me on call after 90 days having to be on call for rad and Lab at the time I was very motivated and I taught myself many things when I had a PM for something I would pull the manual out and spend half a day reading how to do the p.m. so I would know I was doing it right almost had a nervous break down about a half a year end of the job because I understand what I do affects patients lives love this video not on call for Lab anymore but still on call for rad

It seems and looks very intimidating working on medical equipment, especially if that equipment needs to be done urgently and possibly around patients, but your nurturing personality would help me get over the the anxious feeling I would have if I worked around a patient to work on the equipment, if this is the career path for me. I am somewhat handy and I like learning, but this career looks to be very practical and secure in the sense that there will always be a need for technicians. In order to get into this field though, I still have to go to vocational school, so for now I'm looking into this career.

I never went to school for bio med. I was hired as an intern and was working by myself many times before becoming a Bio med 1. Luckily I had enough mechanical knowledge and some very basic electrical understanding to squeek bye.

Biomed here who's worked at multiple third party companies and a hospital. Tbh the biomed field is fucked I agree with you on 90 percent of what you said. The problem is also a lot of senior biomeds are stubborn and do pass on mal practice to rookie biomeds. Now you think biomed ones are used for cheap labor ? I've met biomed 2s making biomed 1 money. I also feel this comes from biomed as a career not being respected enough which is why they always wanna hire newbies at a bare minimum and give them tons of PMS and signing off the work order as completed. Great video, I really wish I had a boss like you but I had to learn the hard way by figuring out a lot and being ridiculed for not knowing certain things

My first hospital, my director kept telling me that i would get BMET 2 after 3 years. After 4.5 years, i was heading up projects, the contact for Cap Inspection, the go to guy for offsites and a whole host of other responsibilities. Ended up leaving for a company that onboarded me at level 2 because the other company recognized what an asset i could be.

@@mykejohnson4980 in all honesty, school. If you can find a BMET program at a college or trade school, you can intern at a hospital and network with other techs. The hospital I interned at let me know not openings, and I've recommended interns for jobs before, or spoken on their behalf as a reference.

So I have watched this video in the past, now I’m watching it again after I just started the first day of my apprenticeship with one of the biggest biomed corporations in the United States. I won’t name them because of privacy situations. After my first day yesterday my mentor asked me if I would like to be put on the on call list after I get a couple months under my belt. I don’t want to sound lazy but I do not feel comfortable doing that in the slightest. I forgot to mention I’m not even done with school. I’m still in my last semester.

That's not right. The reason biomeds wrongfully push a junior into doing call is because that lengthens out their own call interval.

Justin!! As a Biomedical Technician 1, for 4 Years now I've been pounding out infusion pumps... guess what??? Year 5 and I'm still here 😪. My appraisals are usually outstanding ofc since I've basically mastered IV Pump technology. You're right! No one wants to change the system of operation. We as Biomed 1s run around year after year PumpingOutPumps. And it is frustrating. I have to ask, what are your thoughts on a seasoned Biomed 1 training a newly hired Biomed 2?

Your career is a competition. Your years of biomed work vs your actually diverse skills are what you will be weighed against vs other candidates. 5 years without growth is unexceptable. You should never have allowed that to happen to your career. That's also bad on your management for abusing their techs.

I hope you are still not a level 1 BMET. Most hospitals is 2 to 3 years experience to move up to a BMET 2. Usually with at least one service school training. CBET should definitely move you up after 3 years

I've been a tech 1 for almost three months. As if early last month I am primery tech for infusion pumps. I am goin to Elite Solutions in Ohio for training next month or so. I would have been sent sooner but January was "pump month". In our hospital we have well over 700 pupms. We have only one bed guy so, soon I will aslo be back up bed guy. Got any advice for me?

Learn as much as you can at work and after work. Use your situation as a stepping stone to prepare for what's next. Have a long term plan and start working towards that plan today.

@@BetterBiomedChannel I'm honest and tell all apprentices and BMET1 employees that Biomed is not a field to be in. They are not appreciated by hospital administration and are underpaid for the responsibility of working on life support equipment. Being under staffed and a never ending growing equipment inventory burns out the older experienced BMETs that want to do quality work, train new BMETs, show them them the proper way to do things, troubleshooting skills / tips, service calls, etc... I had one manager that said new BMET 1 don't need to know any electronics because they are the PM techs. 20 IV pumps per day to meet that PM metric, these new employees only know how to "Lick em & Stick em" the equipment with new PM stickers. 😟 New BMETs make a few bucks more than an Amazon warehouse employee. I'm not joking. 😲 Hospital Administration making Big $$$ 💰...... while we try and keep 20 year old equipment alive. 😤

I put BMET I's on call within 3 months of hire. The secret is pairing them up with an experienced technician after hours. The new guy takes the calls but an experienced tech shows up too, until the new guy is comfortable. Sure, it costs twice as much to put two techs on call but the learning experience is worth it. And it lets the new guy make a bigger contribution early on.

We don't do component level repairs. We just replace the boards. Haven't soldered in 3 years lol.

It's not a liability but a skill issue. Many boards and even more hand / foot controls can be repaired. Soldering is a core competency. If all we become is middlemen who RMA items, we won't continue getting our premium pay.

@@BetterBiomedChannel I don’t believe we do in shop. Hey I love deep troubleshooting down to component level, it’s gratifying and saving the hospital money, showcasing our skills. You know our industry is very demanding and all about down time/turn around time per our KPIs forces us to overnight boards and replace them quickly. Depending on work load we don’t get to dig into these deep repairs but just getting by.

First you fix the customer, then the equipment. In the Army I wanted CT school. You need department heads calling your boss saying what a stud you are and the defense will melt away. Remember some biomeds are attracted to the boring equipment or admin for various reasons and they are important and needed. Not every biomed is Gung ho McGuyver.

Hospitals get rid of in-house because they are sold a umbrella package of supply / food service / laundry/ EVS / engineering with the unicorn and rainbow promise of cost savings.

They quote and sign at a low $ number, they then find ways to increase their inventory numbers and decrease contracts to cut costs. -This puts extra strain on the technicians. They find ways to charge the customer for damages, accessories and batteries.

Sadly, it's not my lane to make the decisions. I have had good experiences with GE as far as their equipment. Not pleased with hearing about their being worshippers of the almighty metrics. Metrics are important but the danger lies in placing it on a pedestal.
