Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Mankind vs Undertaker
While their Hell in a Cell match at WWF King of the Ring 1998 is rightfully remembered, The Undertaker and Mankind had some incredible wrestling matches in the WWE prior to the cell. When Mick Foley made his WWF debut in 1996, he went straight after The Undertaker, and from there, the pair had a ton of matches on Pay Per View, including the Boiler Room Brawl at Summerslam 96 and the Buried Alive match at WWF In Your House 11. The Story of Mankind vs Undertaker is interesting for sure, but it does seem that their matches prior to Hell in a Cell have been somewhat forgotten, due to how famous the cell match has become.
In this video from Wrestling Bios, we look at the Story of Mankind vs Undertaker, covering all their 1 on 1 matches on Pay Per View. Topics covered include:
- The Mick Foley WWF debut as Mankind
- Mankind and The Undertaker meet in the ring after WrestleMania 12 on Monday Night Raw
- The first Undertaker vs Mankind match in the WWE at King of the Ring 1996
- Undertaker vs Mankind Boiler Room Brawl at SummerSlam 1996
- The Buried Alive match
- Undertaker vs Mankind at WWE Survivor Series 1996
- Mick Foley becoming a fan favourite and the "3 Faces of Foley" gimmick
- Undertaker vs Mankind Hell in a Cell at King of the Ring 1998
- Much More!

When you think of history making rivalries, you obviously think of Stone Cold and Vince Mcmahon but when you think of a rivalry that not only made history but helped set the bar for a whole new style for the entire wrestling landscape, you think of Undertaker and Mankind. They didn't just have classic matches, they had legendary wars that spilled buckets of blood and left a pile of broken bones all over the world as well as creating moments that still get talked about to this day. For me the feud made Undertaker into a more serious and vicious in ring performer but also helped cement Mick Foley as one of the toughest men to ever lace up a pair of boots.

Mankind and Undertaker had AMAZING chemistry together. I agree that the Boiler Room Brawl is an excellent and unique match for its time. I don't think anybody has brought out the best in wrestlers as much as Mick Foley. His 1998 work with Austin was incredible; he practically made The Rock, HHH and Edge as legitimate main event players; his 1996 Mind Games match with Shawn Michaels is one of the best WWE matches of all time; he got great work out of Undertaker and Kane. He will always go down as one of the most respected and unselfish wrestlers of all time.

We hear stories about how tough certain wrestlers are... Haku/Meng biting a guy's nose off, and fighting off 8-12 cops... Andre drinking 100+ beers in one sitting... etc. But damn: Mick Foley. That man's toughness was absolutely incredible, and we don't have to rely on backstage stories. We got to see that toughness right before our eyes, again and again. I'm happy for him that he's still able to walk (for now), and I'm really grateful for all the amazing things he put his body through JUST TO ENTERTAIN US.

The entire point of Hell In A Cell is that it will be a brutal match that will effect wrestlers careers for years. It should be used only in a hot feud with a long history between the wrestlers. It shouldn't be just a standard Pay Per View event like WWE has been doing for years now. It really should not be done at all in the PG Era because it's entire purpose is negated by the rating. The thing that made Hell In A Cell so special was that it was Brutal, Bloody, and Rare. WWE seems to have forgotten that.

This feud was excellent. I don't think anyone would deny that Mick Foley did just as much for the Undertaker as Taker did for him. After years of being in boring programs with guys who had little to no talent (probably with the exception of Yokozuna), the Undertaker saw a real resurgence when he began his feud with Mankind. They truly brought out the best in one another, and the fans know it. William Moody as Paul Bearer also most definitely deserves his share of credit as well. He helped enhance this rivalry, as well as 'Taker vs. Kane later on.

this was honestly one of my favorite rivalries, prolly cuz it was during my first look into wrestling, and also because it was between two forces that were so....different. Mankind seemed just nuts and having no fear of pain.....and Undertaker......well, he was "The Phenom", the "Dead Man"... Their feud was one of the best of all time. The 'Hell in a Cell' match was the icing on the cake, it was after their feud was wrapped up, but it gave it the ending it deserved.....and DAMN did Mankind go full force into extreme with his 'off the cell' and 'through the cell' "bumps". It ended their feud on a super high note and definitely shot Foley's career into overdrive.

The BRB was the best part of SummerSlam 1996. If you go back and watch one match from that show, it should be this one. The HBK-Vader match was the biggest let down and this 100% lived up to the hype. It's still kind of spooky before Mankind attacks Taker to start the match.

Definitely up there length and match wise but it would be great if he did Kane & The Undertaker's original rivary 1997-1998. That feud imo had some of the best promo and special effects work however it wasn't as great as The Undertaker & Mankind's rivalry match-wise.

Paul Vercetti Agreed. Definitely some of the best promos in WWE history and during the Attitude Era. I think WWE should do a DVD release with both these rivalries, as they did with the Bret/HBK rivalry.

Dude your narration style has grown so much since this!!!!! You used to be so official and proper and now you have more of an authentic style in 2022. Great video, but it’d be so cool to see your more confident modern style

I remember every taker/mankind match mentioned in this video minus 1 or 2 of them.I also seen the hell in the cell match on ppv and my jaw was on the floor the entire time aswell.I got chills down my spine when mankind was choke slammed through the cage and thrown from the top to the announce table.I legit thought mankind might’ve been killed by it.It even seemed like undertaker was concerned for mankind after he threw him.I remember thinking they must be insane to put themselves through that just for our entertainment. So much respect for both of them.Easily my most remembered match in wwf/wwe history.

Pre-HIAC rivalry was enjoyable. Mankind vignette before debut creeped me out as a kid, I think it was at the end of the vhs or something like that. We watched the whole VHS, I think my dad went for a smokes and my brothers went to our room and I was completely alone in the living room, watching that vignette.
