For the Japan part, chess is a game developed from an ancient Indian game called Caturaṅga, which has a lot of offspring in Asia, like Shogi in Japan, Xiangqi in China, Janggi in Korean, etc. In Asian countries, people tend to play their localized chess variants, which is also an important reason that Asians don't have an overwhelming number of top-rated players in chess when there is an overwhelming population in Asia

Most likely could have gotten away with 500k but im confused how no on was concerned with how thin the board is. Even if most of the processing power is done on a PC, there is no way it can be that thin with a complex collection of electromagnets with enough strength to move pieces around and a circuit board and still structurally strong enough.

We can see it is a scam, my question is, I am guessing when you make a funding page with these popular sites, there is probably a lot of flexibility in the wording of whatever the 'company' might be making. Something like we saw, it is a scam in the sense that they did not have anything that could do what they said, but I didn't hear any mention of criminal charges. Donate $250 and we will send you one of the first 1000 boards we make for free. *It is possible we might not be able to mass produce a working product for all donators. I can see why this would appeal to scammers, since you can seemingly, legally, have people willingly give you money, knowing they might never receive anything in return. Honestly though, what is wrong with people? I want to play some chess, but moving the pieces is way too hard, if only there was a better way? What exactly was this thing going to do? Playing online using a screen is too impersonal, instead I want to sit at a table and play chess against an invisible person? It doesn't make a lot of sense.

In the video, the pieces move without leaving the ground, which seems logical for a smartboard. But how do you play the knight with this limitation? It is obviously too big to move it between the pieces. So, the investigators didn't question this???

Just think if they could have used one of these auto chessboard for otb blitz finals. The player simply tells the arbiter what move they want, and the arbiter enters the automatic move through a USB cable attached to the board. Think of the amazing time scrambles. Also, as OTB cheating remains difficult to pull off, a player could simply set up an auto board at his feet and glance below for the stockfish move sent into the autoboard by USB cable. For cheaters who don't want to have to learn chess move notation (what is b4?), seeing the pieces actually perform the stockfish move would would make safe and accurate cheating work great for just about any player.
