What Edward did at British Vogue is the most iconic showdown of magazine editorial history. I loved that he stayed true to his vision and didn't let the gatekeepers stand in the way of bringing change to life at British Vogue. The numbers didn't lie either. His magazine covers were selling more than American Vogue editor Anna Wintour and if you go month to month, you absolutely understand why the cover stories pulled in more sales. The artist direction was obviously miles ahead. I still remember trying to get my hands on his most viral British vogue covers magazine in America, and they were sold out EVERYWHERE!

He was a black immigrant kid in fashion. He worked his way up. Job for job! There is still not many of us brown and black people in the top positions. Many of us talented ...but he made it to the top and he deserves praise for his achievements - not only because he made it. But because only we colored people can imagine what racism, discrimination and humiliation he had to endure to get to the top. He promised a new Vogue where we would have a face, a say and a place - and he kept his promise. May he help others after him. I didn't make it. I wasn't lucky enough... I worked so hard for so many years because I loved what I did. but I didn't snort cocaine with them to be accepted by the white fashion people. I didn't sleep with them for a job. I wasn't invited to their parties. That is why I didn't get the right jobs. My portfolio was rejected. They told me you have too many black people in your portfolio. Go blond because they are commercial. I was told if your model was white, I would do hair at your shoot. I wasn't given the pieces I wanted to style with. I was mobbed and never considered for jobs. Years and years of outstanding editorials and pictures... But I didn't make it. So when Edward wins, part of me wins with him. I see so much of myself in him. He did it for all of us brown people in a white dominated industry.

I like his description of emptiness. I had that in spades as a young man of always being told there’s only one path and that was to conform. Acceptance of all creeds in life is the best service to one’s own well being. Step back and reevaluate. Be yourself, be your own doctor of life. Listen to your heart. Courage. Find your likeminded values. Don’t get trapped in the wrong company.
