I want to ask something, how would you tackle the topic of fitness to someone with an ed? I want to help my friend but she really is headstrong and a bit stubborn, I don’t want to force it on her (she already exercises but results take a bit long) and I really want to send her this video.
@MyUnoriginalLife
@MyUnoriginalLife Жыл бұрын
@@nat3299 i dont know if this was addressed to me specifically, but i would recommend you ask your friend about what their goals are in fitness and in their eating disorder - like what are 'results' to them vs. you? exercise can often be an extension of ED behaviors, so is it helping or hindering their recovery (if they are working toward recovery)? ED's are stubborn in themselves and often are self-enforcing, so it can be really difficult to disrupt those patterns if the person isn't on board/in that phase of their recovery. sometimes the things we mean as helpful for our friends can be taken in harmful ways regardless of how we intend them- if you're worried about sending them something like this, it never hurts to ask some variation of "hey, i know you have been struggling with this and found a video that feels like it might have some helpful perspective - are you in the space to see something like this right now?" if the answer is yes, sweet, you can talk with them about it and what feels helpful for them about it, and if the answer is no, also cool, what are some helpful things that they could use some support in instead? idk how helpful any of this is, but i'm rooting for you and for your friend!

One of the things I really didn't take into account when eating was tracking calories and macros. When I was 18 I would always skip breakfast and just eat meat and vegetables for lunch. Maybe I would have an apple or some fruit as a snack. And finally my dinner would always be a protein shake and a protein bar. I only realized I was under eating when one day I went to the bathroom and just passed out out of nowhere. My take is : always track what you're eating, because the worst mistake you can do is under/overestimate food
@Hoda_Bunnii
@Hoda_Bunnii 2 жыл бұрын
no yeah same. a few months in to being completely recovered in the "eating at least 3 meals a day" sense from an eating disorder, i decided to start tracking calories again, and while it was probably a stupid idea for most people in my situation, for me i realised i wasn't eating enough at all and now I like tracking calories to see where i need to eat more. (of course tw for numbers) i went from 300 a day for months to 1000 on accident to now i try to eat at least 1600 calories a day.

The last advice made me feel really emotional because I struggle a lot with having a "healthy adult" lifestyle. As someone who has been working full time home office for the last 2 years, is really hard for me to have healthy habits but I'm trying my best; not only I go to the gym, I started going to the psychologist and nutritionist, I work full time I also I take care of my house and I do the cooking everyday and sometimes It stresses me out trying to keep this habits because all of this takes time and a lot of effort, both physically and mentally. Hearing that is ok to take my time is really comforting for me. I really like your videos and I love that you are so chill and cool Patty, thank you for sharing

@maddieb.4282
@maddieb.4282 Жыл бұрын
@@twentyonetortas5921 they can do many of the same things but a therapist is usually a medical doctor and a psychologist is not necessarily one. Doctors can prescribe medication and provide talk therapy, while psychologists/counselors who usually have a master’s degree can just provide talk therapy (and other types of therapy). Seeing someone who is not a medical doctor is usually cheaper!
@peterdearborn
@peterdearborn Жыл бұрын
@@maddieb.4282 Minor caveat/correction here if speaking in the US context. A clinical psychologist is a licensed doctor with a Ph.D. Most cannot proscribe meds, but some can with additional training. Psychiatrists are licensed doctors as well and can proscribe meds, but most are MDs that took more training in psych. Therapist is more is more of a loose term and is not bound by licensure in every context. That said, there are many masters level therapists who are licensed in other specific contexts. All of these folks can be useful in a therapeutic context, but you're absolutely correct that it pays to think of what you are looking for and finding the right type of clinician/therapist/etc. for that.

Something I noticed recently is the people that are more experienced in the gym have surpassed the phase of being disciplined and making themself go to the gym everyday. They go because they really just love training and lifting the weights. Obviously discipline still plays a role on the difficult days but if you struggle going to the gym and really can’t get consistent with it then just keep going and trying different things. People are naturally supposed to want to move so if you hate the training aspect of fitness there is probably an underlying cause. You may not be eating enough, sleeping enough, or just be doing something negative to your hormones (like birth control). Just keep showing up and learning and you will find yourself addicted to training like me. The hard part is everything outside the gym. The gym is like safe vacation where all problems disappear.
@aprilmichel7816
@aprilmichel7816 Жыл бұрын
Another underlying cause of hatred of fitness might be negative experiences from childhood. If you have classmates laughing at you because you can't do shite, teachers being disappointed but hiding it because 'you're trying' and people quitting on teaching you things because it takes a longer time then they expected, it can really rub off on you. Add in being naturally on the clumsy side and afraid of injuring yourself and you have a person that hadn't worked out since PE stopped being mandatory for them.

Hit home with the first tip. I started losing weight by reducing the crap I was eating. Fast food, soda, anything I thought was crap. Dropped about 15 lbs. Loved the results so I started OMAD. I love eating once a day and don't suffer any hunger or weakness. My job isn't a desk job but it's not construction either so it works perfectly for me. It wasn't until I dropped about another 25 lbs doing that, went from 215 to 175 over a three year period, that I noticed that I couldn't get rid of the little fat around my stomach. Time to start exercising. As I started doing simple push ups, incline walking on a treadmill, and the like, that fat was still going nowhere but I was getting more toned, not good enough. Time to weight train. Before I got to that though I wanted to make sure I was taking in enough protein, so I started logging all my calories and macros. I was shocked to discover that I was taking in less than a thousand calories 5-6 days a week. SHOCKED! I wasn't experiencing any fatigue or weakness, I still looked muscular and hadn't lost any muscle mass that I could recognize. But my metabolism had slowed to a crawl. I started taking in as many calories as I could while eating healthy and only OMAD. I was eating over double what I had been, 1700-2400 calories and I started actually losing weight. I dropped to 170. So yeah, you have to find the sweet spot for calories that still allows you to keep your body out of starvation mode and then becomes the exact amount of calories you need without going over what you need. And this is all before you start to really get into weight training or exercise. I'll be honest, it's WAY harder than I thought. Taking in even 2000 calories on OMAD is a struggle most of the time. The high calorie foods are all crap lol. That's why everyone is overweight though. Eating too much is very easy, eating just enough is hard and you might not be able to know what that is without seeing a professional because everyone is different. Anyway, sorry for the rant but it was a trap I fell into. Love the tips and thanks for uploading, love your personality and content. 🥰

I resonate with SO much of what you’re saying! There was a time where I would have an anxiety attack if I could eat my “perfect foods” or if I had to miss the gym just ONE day in a week. I also started lifting heavy to “get skinny” because I heard that having muscle burns fat. Everything in my life was about burning fat and getting to that “perfect point”. But I missed out on my life because of all that. Orthorexia is real. Obsession is real. Once you can overcome those things (it took me a long time to get a bit better), life can be amazing! I eat white rice now! I let myself have pizza! I miss the gym if my body is telling me it needs a break! I try to drink water before eating so I don’t binge! I don’t count my calories, I eat what makes me feel good (lots of veg and rice and proteins and fruit and sometimes a few tater tot’s at my work) and now I feel so much better. When you do all these things for YOURSELF and to feel good and to heal your relationship with your body, it feels amazing! I still fall into bad mindsets and over do it at the gym or restrict my eating, but I’m way better now than I was before. (Sorry for the novel, this is just such an important topic for me and I hope my comment can help others) I know it’s hard to believe that you can love the body your in without drastically changing it, but learning to appreciate what your body can do and is always doing for you, was my first step to self love.

Fitness doesn't need to look a specific, certain way. It is very dependent on individual goals and I don't think enough people realize that. It's not an all or nothing thing. Your advice about 'not letting the fitness journey becoming obsessive' and 'don't let your internal voice be too critical or negative' I think are going to be hugely helpful for beginners and advanced athletes. Consistent diet and exercise over the long run is key. Chowing down when you are hungry every now and then or having a slack day of exercise or an extra day off is not going to blow the whole thing. I rest on Saturday and Sunday, even though I have active rest days I feel like I'm being lazy and I don't want to write a paragraph but thank you for letting the overthinkers know we're doing good.

Great and informative video. Mad respect to you for sharing your advice and mistakes. I don't think the subjective and mental aspect about fitness is talked about enough on fitness channels. Most advice I've seen is just about exercise selection, technique, programming, and purely objective diet tips. This video is for sure needed and will help out struggling lifters and gym goers.

I really relate to being the happiest when I don’t put the gym as my main focus for the day. Having bad workouts or missing workouts happens and you can really beat the hell out of your body by overtraining. I also found when I went to the gym 5-6 times a week every week for months that I had really bad body dysmorphia and would harshly judge people for not taking care of their bodies.

Just found this channel, I have to admit that I didn't expect such a cool and reflected person after superficially seeing all the viral stuff. This is pure authenticity, I love it. Especially the the weight part for me personally (male) because taking SSRIs to help with mental problems, I gained some weight and am hungry all the time. Being very conscious of my body, this has led to a lot of anxiety alongside my depression, so yeah you made me feel a lot better.

And this video was amazing for that, thank you so much.

Great advice, I worked out for a pretty long time and stopped for a long time too. Now I'm trying to get back to it. The best advice you can always give is, don't be too hard on yourself. It's better to get to your goal slower and have a good time than just rushing to it and suffer constantly.

Love this message. During Covid I started to drop lots of weight (about 4-6 pounds a week when I put my mind to it) and see a change in my body. I haven’t been under 200 pounds since high school so this was great! However, my mind was not at all in the best place nor was I doing it with the right intentions. I had to take a step back to reevaluate why I was doing it and if I was going about it in a truly healthy manner. I’m just now getting around to restarting and I’m trying my best to keep my mind in the right space.

I can't even tell you how much this video meant to me to hear you talk about self love and having respect for your body. I'm 35. I spent most of my life beating myself up for my body not looking certain ways. I spent lots of time comparing my body to others. There are so many "body trends" in society that women, especially, have to "follow" in order to fit the beauty standards at the time. It used to be stick thin and a thigh gap that used to be the "in" thing and now, it's an extremely tiny waist with huge boobs, big lips that are usually pumped with filler, nails always done with a huge Kim Kardashian type of butt that's usually obtained by getting a BBL (Brazilian butt lift). Just when you think you have the body that is desired within society and pushed by every social media influencer out there, the body type that's desired, changes. We tend to treat our bodies like the latest fashion trend that we can just take off and change at any given time. Not to mention every celebrity, magazine, TV show or movie putting the same type of pressure on women (mainly) to change our bodies instead of love and accepting them. Everything you said in this video, was directed toward self love and it really helped me to hear you talk in that way. I've suffered with an extreme desire to be thin and even when I got to 89lbs (my lowest), it still wasn't good enough and I still wasn't happy. I still called myself fat. It's also caused immense damage to my body that I think is permanent. Due to being that thin for so long, all of which you mentioned, happened to me-loss of period, no energy (I had to sit down everytime I took a shower), vitamin deficiencies, my hair fell out in clumps and I also destroyed my beautiful teeth that I used to have, from forcing my body to throw up any food that I did eat on the rare occasion that I did actually allow myself to put any calories into my body. That's no way to live. I barely had energy for basic things. Fast forward to two years later, and I'd like to get back into strength training. It's hard for me to wrap my head around how much I'm supposed to eat though for muscle gains. I know how to eat healthy as I have been a vegetarian for 13 years or so, but I'm struggling with how much I'm supposed to actually eat and with the whole protein thing. Switching your focus from starvation mode and self destructive ways to healthy and using food as fuel, is actually very difficult to do. It's like night and day when you have lived a particular way for most of your life. But this video was one of my favorites from you. Just hearing you talk about giving yourself a break, but being hard on yourself or beating yourself up and shifting focus to respect and care for the body is honestly so helpful and inspiring. Thank you!!

Its really hard to break out of patterns of thinking that we have growing up, especially those concerned with self perception. its a losing battle to ‘fight’ yourself, as much as we may want it, it will never be satisfied. we can only let go. of that feeling of control. to work on realistic healthy acceptance. its not ur fault. let go of the guilt and shame and disappointment. in time that will fade. you’ve already past the first step of self awareness, the desire to heal and grow. the brains plasticity means that it can be changed. with small consistant effort. building healthy habits, routine, lifestyle. the body adapts quickly. a healthy body will lead to a healthy mind. focus on healing the body, and your confidence, happiness, self-assuredness will follow. I’m rooting for you

My biggest mistake: Trying to go to the gym 6 times a week while working, studying and not a having a gym close to home. I switched to a 4 times a week full body split with compounds and I actually gained muscle and strength. So, for anyone that’s way to busy, you can work out 💪.

Setting the bar too high can really be an awful way to demotivate oneself, when the truth is that even two workouts a week can create huge progress for beginners, and three meaningful workouts can include things done at home to bring up the frequency from 1 or 2 gym sessions. Any little bit can be enough of a difference from nothing at all to be worthwhile and get one started.

@UnPeuDeTourisme
@UnPeuDeTourisme 11 ай бұрын
Honestly… I don’t really think 1200 calorie it’s not normal for some people. Personnally I use to eat between ~600-~1600 calorie (because I eat one or twice per day). And recently I realised I need technically ~2000calorie. However I feel great in low calorie even if I work out. I have my period, great skin, great recovery, healthy body fat and normal weight for my height/body (158cm for 47-48kg). So I think it depends… some people need to eat more and some people don’t. However I try to eat more since I know I need more food but I’m a poor student…
