These country songs are all about celebrating the simple man and simple values, and while I prefer techno music myself and honestly despise country music because I was around it so long, I believe that the values it incorporates are timeless. As someone living with a traumatic brain injury this concept is old hat. I am to some extent grateful for having a really difficult disability that's misunderstood by both the general public and medical/mental health professionals alike. It has given me no choice but to develop my character as a person much quicker than most do. At the end of the day I have had no choice but to realize what truly matters in life. For that I am ever thankful. My life can be excruciatingly difficult, but it's not at all wasted. I have been given a great gift to live for things that truly matter. I like these videos, they reconfirm what I take away from a constant, unrelenting struggle. That makes me feel good and encouraged.

That's probably what this video is talking about. Your father wanted you to aim for the sun because he wanted you to ensure that no matter what you do, it was always with the best intention of maximizing your utmost potential and resolve. Depending on what you aimed for, at the very least it would get you somewhere whether you succeeded or 'failed'. That way, he could be pleased that you did your very best to aim for the best, and if that didn't work out, it would land you in the next best place in life. However that's from his perspective. For you though, it only serves to make you ultimately dissatisfied with yourself because all you want is the sun and nothing more. That's only the explanation about your father and all perfectionist parents who end up with the issue that is discussed in this video. In the end this only serves to make the parent feel unnecessarily inadequate, while in tandem also you I suppose (it doesn't have to be unnecessary though. These videos are always good about bringing you back to reality. If you choose to be a perfectionist anyway though, you should be resolved to deal with whatever comes with it. "resolve" is just another way for saying "giving up", except that resolve usually means giving up something for the other, more prioritized goal).

The most important thing is being able to say this: "I am enough." Because only then, we can also learn to appreciate the " good enough". If you want to reach this point, Brene Brown's wonderful book " Daring Greatly" and her excellent TED talk are very helpful. Well, in a world of constant " compare and despair", that state of feeling " I am enough" is not a place where you can always stay once you get there. That requiers a lot of clarity of mind. For example we must constantly remind ourselves of these things: that we have only a certain amount of talent at hand, that we have the past that we have with a family we didn't choose, and we have the body we have, that has its own problems. So what we can do with the combination of all three is of course limited. But as long as we are honest with ourselves and we are not being lazy but rather very curious and diligent, then we can see the outcomes of our efforts, and ultimately the life we created as " enough" and learn to be happy with them. As they say, you don't see the world as it is but as you are. So it is all in your mind! Considering our obsession with perfectionism, here is a quote I love a lot: " So many of us believe in perfection, which ruins everything else, because perfect is not only the enemy of the good; it's also the enemy of the realistic, the possible and the fun". Rebecca Solnit And I love the following poem a lot too. So many of our dissapointments come from an obsession of wanting to be " somebody". That's why, someone who is proud to be "a nobody" is indeed reminding us of something very consoling: I'm nobody! Who are you? Are you nobody, too? Then there's a pair of us - don't tell! They'd banish us, you know. How dreary to be somebody! How public, like a frog To tell your name the livelong day To an admiring bog! Emily Dickinson By the way, friends from Brasil, do you remember this little piece by Martha Medeira? I have heard it from Lenine's son Bruno. He reads this before his father sings the wonderful song " Envergo mas nao quebro": "Aventura não é escalar montanhas, não é atravessar desertos, não é preciso bravura. Aventura não é saltar de avião, não é descer cachoeira, não é preciso tontura. Aventura não é comer bicho vivo, não é beber aguardente, não é preciso angústia. Aventura não é morar em castelo, não é correr de Ferrari, não é preciso frescura. Aventura é tudo o que faz uma pessoa tornar-se capaz de abrir mão da loucura. Aventura é ser mãe e pai."

I have been suffering from anxiety due to being a perfectionist. My mom and my sister keep on saying that I should just do whatever best in my ability. I think they have the same idea as what the video is about, being good enough. However, as perfctionist, I am used to see things on the extreme. So, even when people say: "Do your best in your ability" or "It's enough to be good enough", I still feel like I am not doing my best or I am not good enough. This kind of thinking results me in feeling incompetent and it really destroy my confidence.

Yes it is..but sometimes some of the videos could be a little dangerous to watch for a vulnerable person who is in, say a very abusive relationship. Their reasons for staying are always complex, yes it can involve a lot of unconscious replaying or trying to resolve early life traumas, which the person can become aware of..but I think SOL needs to assert that there are certain behaviours that really shouldn't be tolerated. There are very violent people out there and a vulnerable person (can be anyone really) can make excuses for staying and putting up with treatment if they've learned early on or whatever to not expect any more, or find reasons such as some of the videos that they shouldn't want or expect better for themselves. Yes, living with another person will always have its conflicts, it is inherently difficult and never as good as we would like it, but there needs to be a line where a person knows that the relationship is no longer safe, and knows that yes, emotional and psychological abuse that can escalate to physical abuse is not acceptable, even if 'good enough' some of the time. This may seem very obvious to some but trust me coming from experience, when you're in it the lines are always blurry, you're not able to see the wood for the trees and with the hope of change always lingering on the horizon, you find yourself making excuses for or being in denial of the most horrendous words and acts of abuse, including physical and sexual. A video on this would help.
@pennymac16
@pennymac16 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but they might have already done one. And as much as I agree with what you're saying, I don't think it applies to what this video is about (in my eyes), which is how one sees _oneself_ rather than how you see others or how they treat you. As appears to be the theme of this channel, the focus is entirely on the person thinking, how they feel about themselves. I also don't think it would've been necessary, much less obligatory, to include a tidbit specially for people in abusive relationships. It's the same as with trigger warnings: it's just not practical to always include them for everything and everyone who *may* get triggered in a way. One may even argue that this video _supports_ abused people, in that it is telling them they are good enough _despite_ what their partners might tell them, so they may feel more confident in wnding the relationship. EDIT: Well, I kind of have to retract my argument after rewatching. He does mention the application to other areas of life, such as relationships, which may have "many dark momtents."

Maybe a video on dangers of compromising for the stakes of staying in relation. Self-sacrificing with a person who clearly thinks it's either his/her way or the hi-way is sheer stupidity and life long servitude not compromise. However, the good enough notion should be compared to perfection strive not to things could have been worse.
@1lmjm
@1lmjm 7 жыл бұрын
What I said may not seem immediately relevant to this particular video, but I meant in more general terms SOL videos focus on understanding why people are the way they are and react the way they do. But you can try and be understanding and know no one nor any relationship is perfect, but it's the ability to gauge where the line is that is the real difficulty, how much you should take, the degree to which you should change and compromise yourself. Yes that is the individual's choice, and one of the most difficult in life I think. A common theme in these videos is that your partner can do this or that and the other and it may look like they don't love you or you don't love them, and they explain why this is not the case. But really fact is they don't always love you, and you may not always love them, and it's knowing for sure that's the case and what the truth is is where the grey area lies. There was recently a video on wishing a loved one dead (daydreaming more than actually desiring it) and explaining how this is normal and doesn't mean you don't love them. But equally it could simply be that you do not love them and think it would be easier than having to go through a break up and the guilt and uncertainty and upheaval that results. I think a video should be made on what exactly are the real signs you don't love someone anymore, and the real boundaries that should be there so a relationship does not turn abusive (and an exact definition of what represents abuse), because usually things such as angry rages, name calling, jealousy, lying, and even cheating are all explained away by SOL as just part of relationships.
@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 7 жыл бұрын
1lmjm What TSoL is advocating is the Middle Path, reasonable imperfection, not the need to accept the unacceptable. Life is imperfect, so to expect perfection is a mistake. However, this is not to say one shouldn't try to improve one's life; rather that one should accept and learn from failure, and when feasible increase your failure rate. This isn't passivity or giving up on positive change. It is fostering an attitude of experimentation. To quote: "If you don't like where you are, change it...you are not a tree." When you have had enough of emotional or physical abuse, then you will change. That's all anyone can really do - be the change you want to see in the world, and choose differently.
@sophiem5631
@sophiem5631 7 жыл бұрын
yeah, it really bothers me how SOL makes these sweeping statements that don't reflect the complexity of life. 'good enough' is not good enough when you're in an abusive relationship, or when your job's 'good enough' because your boss won't give you the raise you deserve or you can't get something good because you didn't have the educational opportunities of a richer person etc. There are so many ways in which convincing yourself your life is 'good enough' means accepting unfair situations on a personal or societal level.

I liked this video, because i think it delivers another message to it. First of all it says, that we should accept ourselves as what we are and have. Therefore there is no need to be envious on others. Some ppl might be rich, some might look way better, but as long as you are happy with yourself there isnt the sligthest reason to crave for what others have. What you have is good enough! Though that doesnt mean in the sligthest, that there is no room for improvement. But one should improve for the sake of achieving this improvement and not, because of the need to improve for the sake of improving. thats at least how i understood this:)

It seems to me this advice it is much more appreciated for guilty people than perfeccionist . When feeling guilty or too much responsible for the things we do wrong to others it is difficult to enjoy life in general so it is a big relief to know that because we are humans, meaning imperfects, "good enough" parent, friend, wife or whatever is the best we can be. That's to be realistic. Most perfectionist will not appreciate this advice because maybe they think that to aim for perfection or to look like perfect is the price for being loved.

This video sparked a revelation, an epiphany, in my mind. For the longest time I was never able to satiate both my perfectionist self and my inner couch potato. That is, until I saw the phrase "good enough is good enough." It's as if that phrase and my own self-motivation act as a sort of checks and balances to each other. "Good enough is good enough" and "just keep trying" keep me from teetering from one absolute (being perfectionism and over-sensitivity to mistakes) to another absolute (being stagnation and the numbness to mistakes). It sounds over-dramatic, I know, but it's as if a mental ceasefire has been issued in my mind and I can finally take break from fighting this constant mental conflict between my perfectionism and my laziness. For now, at least, this video has given me a mental respite. Truly, thank you School of Life. You give me advice and wisdom that I have not found anywhere else. :)

For me, I think it's "happiness" :) ...no matter how little, or how much it is, if you don't feel happy/ satisfied, then it's not good enough :) ...Just take note that it should be happiness based on your own standards, not other's :D

I feel like when it comes to being 'good enough' there's more emphasis on trying and giving it all your effort, so much that it actually becomes unhealthy or difficult to continue to do so. From here, you realise that what you're trying to do, produce and/or achieve etc, is actually good enough. Being mediocre, I guess in some ways, equates to laziness. Maybe you're not trying hard enough, and you're aware of this, yet you constantly decide to just move on, and be 'mediocre'.

@emmatessier600

It's mainly directed at the types of people (like myself) who are always in pursuit of their dreams, but tend to feel unaccomplished even if we are living very good lives. Anything a perfectionist may desire, but has not been achieved (yet), becomes the cause of unhappiness. We need to hear this stuff to learn how to be happy regardless if the dream is achieved. (For example, I'm studying to be an engineer which is one of my dreams, but it will take me a little longer than I expected. I have trouble accepting that being six months of the original schedule is still OK and good enough...)

So true. If one looks around them, and everything you see is pretty much the end result of "good enough." Very rarely is something or someone the apex of design or tops in their field. "Good enough" will see you through most of your life. Let that take some pressure off of you. You do you and make the best of your life.😉
