If procrastination is a problem for you, this is the video for you. While this video doesn't give you any "tricks" (that will be coming up in a part II video), it aims to give you something even more valuable - an entire new perspective that helps curb procrastination at the root. And in doing so, shift how you think about everything - your self, your life, and what you are truly capable of.

So for those who are reading comments while listening to the video, stop it, and watch the whole video it literally gave me a drastic change in my mindset I keep revisiting this, this was the only thing that made me realize things differently, I have seen a lot of "How to overcome procrastination" sort of tips videos and they were all so repetitive. I already knew them, and those didn't help me enough. Still, I am telling you, if you could sit with all your focus and attention for at least 9 mins 36 seconds, and if you understand the message, you will save a lot of years ahead, this is a great theory and I respect this man!

@@charmedprince I think a strong identity change beats everything for procrastination. I've tried everything and fallen to that concept. If you want a good video about it then search "Hamza unfiltered what I've never told you about getting consistent." Just watch that video and remind yourself that you're disciplined. You might find it woo woo, but It worked for me more than any other woo woos out there. I'd highly recommend watching that if your procrastination is purely out of laziness, if it is because of the fear of failure, then you might need a mindset change and not some procrastination tricks as none will work through that, I'd recommend listening to Alex Hormozi's videos, I don't know which one but he says that the only way to get better is by doing more, and the more you do, the more you'll fail in the early days. Alex hormozi's content about helped me with my fear of failure, and Hamza's video helped me fix my identity to a disciplined man, and therefore it was easier to stop being lazy as the consequence was losing my new (and better) identity. This all might sound too much fragile and delicate and you might just want to use the willpower, but in the longrun, the more will power I save, the more I can use it for uncomfortable shit.

The "you are the intern" concept is how I have lived for a long time. Alternatively: "Future me is wiser but also older and likely more tired. Don't leave work for them, it's disrespectful and they'll hate it". And now, every time I have to do work and realise that past me had done a quarter or half of it, I have this profound sense of appreciation and work even harder to pay it forward to the next Future me.

A fair take, although it removes the aspect of the video which is perhaps the main point: seeing your "selves" in the future like separate people- but whose path you share, like friends - you can either hurt or help. To remove that removes the aspect of this approach which might be uniquely useful to some people, I'd think

@@thecodingarchitectexactly. People underestimate the capacity of older philosophies simply because they think their forced education and forced improved nutrition means they aren't as "simple" as yogis or stoics. Not blind faith, but actual philosophy of life. Every person has equal capacity to be worse, or better.
@EastmanEditing
@EastmanEditing Ай бұрын
@@cusillo6976 Yes! Sometimes we just need to hear it said in a different way because over time, we end up linking these philosophies to the wrong things, or in the wrong way, such as, "If I don't become a CEO of my dream company by the time I'm 35, that means I will have failed at life, all because I chose to be a lazy bum!!!" Or simpler, "If I don't get this project done today, I WILL get fired and I WILL be homeless and DIE." Or, simpler yet, "If I don't finish this project today, I won't be able to have ANY fun this weekend with my friends." That last one may even sound like a good thing to tell yourself, but that actually can make things worse inside your head. It's easy to spiral into an "all or nothing" mentality where every day feels like the entire weight of your world rests on completing something to 100% perfection by EOD, rather than understanding (and I mean TRULY and fully understanding in your mind and soul) that each moment is only a choice that can help and assist your future self, or alternatively, set back your future self. It's not "all or nothing." It's just doing "something." And it's not actually meant to make you feel guilty or to make you feel like a punishment awaits you if you don't do that something, it's "simply" to help yourself by just taking one single step now. NOT because your boss will be happy that you did the work you needed to get done on time, and NOT because you will impress your parents or friends if you become a rich CEO, and not even because you'll ruin your weekend if you don't do something today. But simply because you are offering a helping hand to yourself, even if it's just in some small way today. The same way you'd offer to help a friend carry one of their bags inside if they were coming to visit you. You are carrying a bag for one of your "future selves" so that they won't be overwhelmed and overburdened tomorrow. Or next week. Or 10 years from now. If you "only" carry one bag today, you still may not be able to hang out with friends this weekend. BUT, if you get in the habit of carrying a bag a day starting right now, then maybe a month from now you will have your weekends back. Or your clean garage back. And soon after that, you may have your sanity back

I think this only works from a neurotypical lens. It's not like I distract myself intentionally and intentionally put off doing tasks. I dont recall. How do i remember to recall? How do I remember to recall to remember? It's endless. The only thing that's somewhat beneficial to me is having a white board that is screwed to the back of my bedroom door. I see the board - it's empty. I write what I'd like/need to get done for the day. I see the board - it has things to do - I do them now because i cant afford to waste time because wasting time means I'll forget and do something else. I do something else? - I go to walk out of my room - i see the board. I see my list, get back on track. I still dont have plans figured out, anything that happens or takes me out of my room is completely a bust. But it helps a little and I'll take the small wins.

The problem of this mentality, is at its core, it's just "work hard for others" and when you already are the one doing that in real life, for so many people, feeling like you're the only one putting blood sweat and tears into work and tasks, it's impossible to bring that to myself. Because YOU are the only person you feel comfortable saying "fuck you, get your own damned shit done" since you know future you can do nothing but whine, and current you doesn't have to hear it

Reframing my day as the only day the current me is alive really helps put procrastination into perspective. Unfortunately I am tortured by ADHD and I don't procrastinate that much but some days it's like trying to lift a 1 ton weight and it can really cascade and domino from there. It's really helpful to see videos like these that can help motivate me even beyond what ADHD is doing to weigh me down. I live in fear of what I could've become if only I could stay focused longer and with more quality. I'm going to try and remember that each new day is a life and death scenario as well as the community of myself that I need to stop freeloading off of. As my way of saying thanks for this video I've liked it and wrote this comment and I'm going to share it to a few of my friends to help boost your metrics for youtube.

I feel the one ton weight thing. For me, what’s helped the most (I think) is to realize that I can’t directly change how I feel about a task that my brain doesn’t want to engage with, but I *can* experiment to find ways to overcome those feelings. For some things, like loading the dishwasher, I just made myself do it over and over until it no longer felt like a big deal. For other things, I usually try to figure out what it is about the task that makes it feel bad, and then try to figure out how I can work around that. Example: Sometimes I need to fill out annoying, repetitive forms at work? I save my responses in notes so I can copy & paste from the last time I did a form, then just update it wherever it needs to be changed. There isn’t always an obvious way to reduce the friction of a task, so if I can’t think of any better strategy, I try to commit to spending five minutes on it. That amount of time is usually enough to overcome at least some of the negative feelings, so it’s easier to keep working on it than it was to start. Anyway, my advice is to stop blaming yourself and start experimenting with different ways to compensate. Good luck!

Looking at life throught the contextual lens that time is an illusion is so incredibly helpful. There is no yesterday or tomorrow, there is only ever now. What are you going to do with it? Procrastination is a fight between present pleasure and future pleasure. The paradox kills you. But the next day, you're still there, and you still have the same problem. You're unable to break the cycle. However, if you reinterpret yourself as an imposter, it becomes easy to fight the good fight. You feel like the imposter, but you become your authentic self.

It can be difficult if it's a particular dream job that you just can't quite reach because most of us can't be lucky enough to have what the world considers a "Dream job," but if it's something coming from external sources, such as feeling ashamed that you haven't lost as much weight as other people who work out as much as you do, or you haven't gotten a promotion in years despite working longer and harder than everyone else in your company, then you can start to examine why other people's lives should even compare to yours in the first place. As long as you're happy and/or content, that's all that matters. And if you're unhappy, that's another angle you'll have to dig into. Are you unhappy because you're ashamed? Or are you unhappy because you wish you were doing something else? Both of those things can be solved. Even if you think the ONLY way you'd ever possibly be happy is if you were an Olympic gymnast but you're 38 and have never taken a gymnastics class in your life...even then, you can take an adult gymnastics class to scratch that itch. Then, you'd just have to do some inner work to be able to come to the place that is understanding and forgiving of yourself, knowing that you will never be in the olympics, but perhaps you can get a job at a local gymnastics facility. Maybe you can find a position where you can assist someone who IS an olympic gymnast, even if it's just carrying their bags and holding their water bottle for them. If that's not enough, then it wasn't the gymnastics that you cared about most. It was status, fame, and "success" from a world viewpoint. If knowing you may never become a famous athlete or business mogul is too painful to bear, it might help to learn about all of the struggles that even the most successful athletes have in their life. And then compare that to the people who are TRULY happy who may have incredibly mediocre jobs and lives. Or they might have a really successful career, but one that they only achieved once they figured out how to be happy with themselves first. In other words, the happiest people aren't happy because they're successful or beautiful or perfectly fit. They're happy because they love themselves no matter where they're at in life. Not that they don't still have hard days where they're angry with themselves or sad about choices they've made, but they always have that underlying love. The same way you may be really angry at a loved one but still love them and care for them deeply.

You have no idea how severe procrastination works. Now I feel even more stuck and anxious after you highlighted all responsibility I have in front of the crowds of future me 😮

But remember, the responsibility you have in front of the future you’s is only valid today. Which also means that you don’t need to think long term, you only need to think what can the you of today do that might help the burden of the you tomorrow. One thing I wish he included is compassion. You want to help the you of tomorrow because you care about the you of tomorrow.

@@iselin4507precisely. This is the mark of self love. Right now, there is a little baby that is growing up somewhere. You are its sole provider. By the time it grows up tomorrow, you will be gone and all it will have is what you worked to leave for it. Do you want it to be scared and have to struggle, or do you want to give it everything it needs to be happy and healthy, and know that you loved it as best you could.

I heard this advice some months ago, it worked too well and had an anxiety attack just from stress. Remember getting things done is not the only thing you have to do as your contribution for the tribe, your mental health and habits are to take care of. Remember to have time to think, just think, at least an hour a day, better if you workout. Have a nice day :p

Here is what has helped me: - Stay grounded: remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. For me, thinking of my parents - Reward yourself in small and big steps. Ex: play video games after finishing a textbook chapter: Buy something when getting a good grade. - Excercise, eat healthy, have a strong supportive network - Get rid of time sinks like social media

Something that really helped me is keeping a journal of the productive or difficult things I did that day, no matter how small. I tend to disregard my accomplishments and only focus on everything I didn't get done, but sitting down at the end of the day and appreciating all the small things I did to help my future self really builds a sense of competency and a hope that things are gradually getting better.

The idea of a person dying every day and being reborn every morning came to me years ago. I call it 'The Little Death'. The bad side is that it triggers my survival panic every time I go to bed. Interestingly, afternoon nap doesn't do the same. This has led me to taking a nap fully dressed instead of going asleep. After an hour or two I will wake up, take my clothes off and go back to sleep.

Homie you have no clue how much this video speaks to me. I started to adopt a concept similar to this. I call it "50 first dates" perspective. I always felt like I couldn't focus well from one day to the next so I made a little journal like Drew Baremore did. I stopped it because I thought "it was cringe".

Great video. I started working out 🏋️‍♀️ again two months ago. I made a point to go everyday as I knew if I missed one day, why not two, three.. and so on. So I said, no, go everyday until I’m dead 😵… well, I was weak on day one and left after 15 minutes. Slowly, I got stronger and stronger and stronger and I continue to get stronger. It’s actually amazing to me, as it seems supernatural when you transform yourself day by day into a new person. My health is greatly improved too, even my sex drive 😅 which wasn’t even my goal 😂. Indeed that’s how self improvement works.. we have a goal and as we strive towards it, we achieve a lot more than we were aiming for. I’ve been a life long goal setter and achiever. A lot of people don’t realize that they can design and tailor their lives however they want. It’s just a matter of setting goals and then fully committing to accomplishing them (or die trying). 😊

Read tomorrow from the frog & toad series… get it done today so you don’t worry about it tomorrow. Instead of saying “ I’ll just do it Tomorrow “ which then turns into another year of let it go to crap. Get your poo together and just get it done.clean those dishes ,pick up after yourself and the people around you ..even if they are not it still benefits you and make YOU into a better person.

These things will actually make me work worse than before. If I am given incentives I will fail, but give me space, time, and the information I need I can quickly do something. The less pressure I feel, and the less overwhelmed I am, the better I work. I do not procrastinate because I think I can do it later, I do it because I am afraid, feel pressured, and am overwhelmed. Then there are the times I need to do things in a certain order, and if something is out of the order, and if I can not fix it at that moment, I am unable to do the things I need to do. I have OCD, and I am autistic.

wow this is really helpful. i had a rough version of this idea a couple of years ago and called it the "time travel team". visualising myself on different days as a team. the gratitude to past selves comes naturally with this. what i didn't think of is the intern idea. being the most inexperienced of them all. also, the "dying every day" is a stronger metaphor for this than time travel. thank you!

This is the first time I've heard someone verbalize the idea of "future me" and "past me", I always thought it was strange that I viewed myself s a different person that I could either set up for success or failure, and past me has messed me up so many times that I don't want to be like that. That's how I dealt with procrastination before this, but this mentality just elevates that so thank you

I put off so much by watching KZbin videos... But seriously, this is a great discussion that really puts things into perspective. What helps me to get things done is to create and use checklists. I have one for everyday tasks that must be done and one for projects. But I don't just list the name of a project; I break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks and tackle them one at a time. I've accomplished so much this way.

i knew this kind of setup for a while, but not framed in that way, this reformulation is very good for me to be more concsious of myself in front of that which i need to do that i've mostly intellectualized instead of acting upon them, i do few things for other pepole, yet when i get the idea to, i do such a thing in the most effortless way i experience, because its very clear as an end goal, and mostly, because it is for someone else i care about, so this mindset will likely be tremendously effective, i am very grateful for you, and your video, as well as the couple of other i watched that are full of wisdom as well, thank you.

I really like the part at the end where you said that the me of today is the dumbest one and my time is the least valuable out of all of those in the future who will come. This actually takes some pressure off. My work doesn’t have to be absolutely perfect and I don’t have to feel terrible, if I still have a lot of room for improvement. I still need to do what I can today even though I know it will not be perfect. And I also like the perspective that the time of future me is more valuable and I need to prepare things to free up, future me’s time. it is like I am a personal assistant to me.

oh this is so smart and touches on something i did in the past. i have OSDD-1B but my system fused earlier this year. while i still resent the way it fucked with my boundaries and sense of identity, the sense of community and purpose i got from sharing my mind with several streams of consciousness was something that really carried me through all the shit i was going through, but now that im only living for me and my goals it's been really hard to move forward. doing things for the group of my future is such a valuable and intuitive way to look at it. i also think this is why a lot of systems prefer the idea of functional multiplicity to fusion, having people who are you to count on your to make their lives better is a very comfortable motivator.
