Hani Hanjour was my neighbor in an apartment complex in Mesa, AZ for a long time. He lived in the apartment upstairs and across (diagonally) from me. The complex was called Shorebird Apartments. There was always 4-5 middle eastern guys coming and going from that apartment. EDIT: When the towers were hit/being hit there was what sounded like cheering and "happy excited" shouting coming out of that apartment.

To expand on my story further in the days and weeks following 9/11 the FBI (and probably every other 3 letter acronym agency) took over that apartment, and ultimately that whole building within the complex. Shorebird Apartments gave all of us that lived in that building (8 apartments in total) our security deposits back and let us out of our leases. The American Red Cross was there financially helping residents, they put a few people up in hotels and gave us Visa Gift cards to assist with relocation.

Debris from the towers caused fires on multiple floors. However, by the time the towers collapsed most firefighters and emergency personnel were trying to pull people from the wreckage of the towers. There was almost no water pressure left in the area to fight the fire on multiple floors in WTC 7, so they just let it burn essentially. A bit after 5 PM the columns started to buckle due to the fire (not melt, but enough to cause the steel to weaken), leading to a progressive collapse. If you listen to radio calls throughout the day, they were aware of situation, but as the building had been completely evacuated early in the day, they decided to do nothing to save it. They also evacuated the area around WTC 1 and WTC 2 during the collapse, and resumed rescue work afterward. If you want to believe the conspiracy theory crowd, it was used as a planning / storage area for explosives, and demolished (hours later, for some reason) to try to cover up government involvement...or something. I don't know, the conspiracy theories never made sense to me.
