Hmm this is different to how TM was taught on the training I took. You don’t really keep repeating the mantra. You keep it in mind, and it becomes a vehicle to bring the mind to a calmer state. My mantra comes to my mind just like any other (non-verbal) thought. It’s like a sound coming to my mind. I don’t agree with how expensive TM trainings are, but the training I took many years ago is still ingrained in me.

Glad i watched this before I paid a lot for TM. In my intro the guy told me it was effortless and the mantra ‘charms’ the brain. To be honest it sounds like any other mantra meditation. It feels more like a commercial business - which is fine, but because of that there is a ‘pitch’ to sell it. Even to the point of dismissing similar meditation practises. ‘Oh no, that meditation is a poor copy of TM and won’t have the same effect’. Such a strong reaction back (won’t bore you with the transcript) it sounded very political. Clearly a clash between mantra and Beeja meditation and TM. It put me right off. So thank you for this clear description of how it feels to practise.

The mantra is sometimes loud and sometimes a whisper, sometimes fast and rhythmic, sometimes chaotic and layered like distant fireworks. What was I thinking? lol no matter what, my mind will produce a new thought just as my heart will go on beating and my lungs will go on breathing. At some point during my practice it will seem like some distance has happened between my last thought and the next and there then is only my mantra. At that point I let go of the mantra and just relax for a minute or two and slowly open my eyes. Almost always for me when I look at the clock about 20 minutes have passed.

I wonder if anyone can help guide me as to why I end up with high blood pressure after each TM 20min session, and if there is a way that I can non-medically avoid this condition. I am a 72 year old male, and after watching your video (and a Bloomberg talk by Ray Dalio, who also recommends TM everyday), I thought it would be a good idea to do it, and started doing it (per your video above) in the morning and evening, for 20 mins each time. But, after a few days of these sessions, I was struck by how I got a mild headache each time, and when I measured my BP it was 155->170 diastolic and 85-75 systolic. Thank you in advance for anyone's guidance in this regard.
@SRBurns-oo2ij2 жыл бұрын
That's very unexpected, and contrary to typical results with TM which usually lowers BP, if anything, since TM is basically just deep rest, nothing more. Check with your doctor. Also, check with TM teacher to be sure you aren't straining in some way. Also, check BP at set time daily for a while. And check a while later after TM to see if it drops down again. Etc., etc.
@alpineclimber2 жыл бұрын
@@SRBurns-oo2ij Thank you very much for your reply, and yes, it was a big shock to me to see the BP going up instead of going down. Still, I will keep measuring it on the same basis as you've suggested, and hopefully, it is a 'transitory' problem. Otherwise, I'd have to give TM entirely, which is a shame, since the above excellent video helped me go to it, as it seemed so simple, and 20 mins is a short investment for a retired person, in the morning and in the evening, before going to bed.

It is extremely unusual to experience an increase in B/P during meditation, since the opposite is expected. I would check with your doctor or health professional for medical advice regarding this. There are near infinite variations in what we can experiences when we close our eyes, doing TM or anything else. But, TM is a very specific technique. It is not arbitrary. You are given specific instructions for how to deal with thoughts, subjective feelings, changes in physiology, etc. It's a unique practice, based on Ancient Vedic Knowledge. Nothing is left to chance. It is 100% simple, natural, and effortless. It can only be learned correctly thru a Certified TM Teacher. Go to www.tm.org Enjoy!

Good video. I'm 2 weeks into a regular practice. I find after it when I'm in nature I feel incredibly happy and in the moment, everything looks sharper and I can hear better. Other times if I go into a stressful environment I'm short tempered. Its like I amplify the setting I'm in. I'm just going b to continue with the practice as its beneficial, I feel better overall. Each session is different.
@SRBurns-oo2ij2 жыл бұрын
Yes, every session will be different, since the physiology, by its very nature, is always changing. TM is basically 'deep rest,' nothing more. Most important...Make sure you are taking enough time to come out of meditation. The instruction is to stop thinking the mantra, then take 2 or 3 minutes before opening your eyes. 3 minutes is best. Irritability can happen if you come out of meditation too fast.
@pumpkinheadjrb3 жыл бұрын
I occasionally accidentally switch my mantra with a drum beat type thing. I'm considering just switching to "om" to stop this. Should I hold onto the mmmmm? or does it matter?
@PilatesUnionUK3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters how long you hold the OM. When you chant, the mantra may change (the length of it may vary, the pitch and tone may change from time to time during the practice)
@jpmarques72 жыл бұрын
Nice video. Question: if the task is to keep on repeating the mantra how does transcending the mantra come about?
@PilatesUnionUK2 жыл бұрын
Now there's the million dollar question and an impossible one to answer. Think of it like sleep. You lie down in the dark, draw the curtains, cover yourself in a blanket and close your eyes. Sleep comes but you don't know how or when it happens. You can't teach someone how to sleep. Its the same with meditation - you can give someone the tools and set the right conditions but you can't teach someone how to achieve that state of mind. If, when and how you 'transcend' - just "happens" as a result of being in the present moment and repeating the mantra.

I have been practicing TM for some time now, but I can't remember EVER experiencing what you describe as "transcending". I have fallen asleep or experienced time lapses, but does a person really consciously experience the transcendental state?
@SRBurns-oo2ij2 жыл бұрын
By its nature the Transcendent is defined as awareness without an object of awareness. Thus, the experience of having transcended is sort of after the fact, as you indicate. When Transcendental Consciousness is established in the nervous system, you are in a state of what Maharishi called Cosmic Consciousness, a fancy word meaning All-inclusive, or permanently established Transcendental Consciousness. There are many variations of subjective experience prior to that fully established CC. Keep in touch with your TM teacher, TM center. Explanations of experiences are always helpful to fully appreciate what is happening. There are thousands of hours of video tapes available, many online, where Maharishi discusses the various states of consciousness and characteristics. The subjective growth, improvement in happiness, productivity, serenity, etc. can be simply appreciated as they are. The intellectual objective understanding isn't exactly essential, but it adds another level of appreciation that tends to enhance the subjective. Maharishi called it having the 200% value of reality.

how long does it take to get to blissful state?...I am not able to reach it
@PilatesUnionUK3 жыл бұрын
You may never reach it. In 26 years of doing TM I’ve only experienced, what I would call “oneness” one one occasion. Other times, it’s just relaxing and sometimes I’ve transcended all thought. I’ve also experienced agitation, frustration, boredom etc (all of which are normal states to go through). The point is not to have ANY expectations whatsoever and to let the practice be whatever it is. To be present with whatever happens in the moment. Not judging it, analysing it, trying to change it or wanting something to happen other than what is actually occurring in the moment. As soon as you stop all of the above and just breathe and focus on the mantra and allow whatever arises (thoughts, emotions, visions, sounds, feelings and sensations) to just BE, then you are on the right track. Practice Witness Consciousness only. This means that whatever arises, you just passively observe it without getting involved- like a witness watching a movie. No analysing or trying to interpret or change anything.

For example, "AING" is a name for Saraswati. We also discuss the meaning of "advanced techniques". As further evidence that TM mantras are well known and available across India, we add statements from the Kropinski case showing that TM is no different from Japa (mantra repetition) as taught by Swami Sivananda - and can be derived from his teachings.
