lmao you haven't heard too many foreigners who live around you speaking English in America, have you? in new york you grow up learning out to decipher the thicker accents of the older immigrants, even though with many of them you have to accept that there gunna be whole sentences you don't understand, then you just gotta wing it. i know of many many people who've been here decades and still don't really bother with english, because there's always elements of cultures that aren't going to assimilate to their host nation. just look at Europe.
@runningfromabear83545 жыл бұрын
@@TomYawns I'm from London, same thing growing up hearing a lot of accents. Amusingly, linguists are finally waking up and realizing the local accent has changed and replaced cockney. As a kid, cockney was how my Dad his family talked from east London. But most of us didn't talk like that. It's been named Multicultural London English. Which makes it sound a lot flashier than it is. If you look at cockney, it was the result of the same thing. Lots of immigrants. MLE is just a shift more towards Jamaican and Indian as they came in large numbers starting in the 60s. Three generations later and the accent has transformed faster than typical for the UK.

I'm in my 30s. Britain's been moving from imperial to metric my entire life. They coexist. Apparently we don't do well with break ups.

@Hekat the Evil B-tch I've never seen that & I think my count is at 23 states visited. I didn't even know there was an attempt!! The UK still has mph. Of course. 🤷🏼♀️ This has opened up such a wormhole of thoughts - it's like when an American says to me: so Scotland's a country...? *And* England's a country...? But the UK is also a country...? And honestly, it just doesn't seem complicated until you realise you have to start with, "In 1603, the King of Scotland was the only heir to the English throne, so..." We're complicated!
