Did Triton on my last 210 gal Reef and won't go back afterwards. Once my tank reached stability I was up to maybe 2 IOP tests a year and almost no water changes. Just ATO top off replenishment every week or so (using a 5 gal buck system and SMART ATO). Testing too dropped off once my tank reached stability so there was a savings there. Fish did fine with regular feeding and lighting as good equipment (something alot of folks overlook). Added my Apex Classic when I started the tank and then upgraded to the new Apex system and tank was pretty much a pleasure to enjoy and less of maintenance/water change night mare. Am doing the same now with my much smaller 100g Waterbox 130.4 tank and so far so good. Corals are adjusting and tank is stabilizing well I think. 1st IOP was pretty good. Of course here I am able to get free water (in Hawaii and they have a direct tap for public consumption of salt water at one of the parks) so that helps a whole lot cost wise. Back in the states with my 210g I would go thru at least $10-20 gal a month of LFS bought salt water and $30-40 or so if I bought actual salt to mix. So after I started Triton it cut down on those misc costs quite a bit. Will also say manpower and time/effort is an intangible cost that they don't measure here. The time you spend going to get salt, mixing and letting settle and such depending on your setup can make Triton worth it. I think so as I do now get to enjoy the tank more vs working on the tank to get it/keep it enjoyable. My 2 cents...

There is something I will kill to see. Can you match Triton approach with other products? Using BRS pharma and tropic marin part C. No water changes for 3 months and send an ICP test of recently mix saltwater vs the water in the test tank. I think magnesium will be a problem but you get the gist. Look for a triton alternative using cheap high quality BRS pharma products and something else. That's your homework guys, go figure that out.

Did you add the cost of maintaining elements in to the water change side of the argument. Running triton reduces or eliminates WC, covers element consumption and reduces nutrients. You compared it to just water changes, however water changes alone will not cover nutrient export and calcium and alkalinity so would you not still need to add that in?

$21 a month x12 months $252 + $141 (3 test) + $134 additives + 1/2 the water changes $100 yr = total $627 per yr. Please help my math, or do I need hearing aids? Even if you use 1000 ml a yr at $58 + $141 + 134 + $100= $433

Personally, if I'm not doing water changes at all, I'm doing monthly ICP tests, at least for the first year. I'd only drop to quarterly or semi-annually if I'm doing ICP + water changes, not ICP _instead of_ water changes. To just stop water changes and then wait 3-6 months to learn about the effects seems like wishful thinking to me. If after a year of changing nothing on the tank and getting consistent test results, then I'd consider it.

Depending on the tank. I mean, Triton did some research on how elements are consume, so as long as your keeping alk-calcium at a steady level, you are also providing a steady amount of trace elements. But if you have a tank fill with sps colonies, I will do it 2 times a month to protect the animals. I am not sure how much trace elements changes from 1 month to 2 months
