Weaponized incompetence makes me rage. All pettiness is negated in my opinion. My husband always used to use "I didn't know how ___" as an excuse to not do certain household chores. One time he didn't reheat leftovers we were eating for dinner because he "didn't know what temperature to heat it to" and I lost it. Now he knows "I don't know" is not a viable excuse for anything unless it's genuinely complicated.

There's a chance he could have been an undiagnosed Neurodivergent brain. ADHD often causes a time blindness with short term memory loss that results with a hyper focus on some tasks and complete ignorance of others. Untreated, it makes the brain work overtime to manage the sensory overload so anything can trigger a deer in headlights type of shock. He might not intentionally lie but his body is acting instinctively as a flight response. I'm saying this cause my partner behaved the same way till he got treated for ADHD and treating it has been life changing. Way less frustration for both of us

@@L3onking this isn't an ADHD symptom, at all. It's an incompetence symptom. It takes common sense, or googling. Heat til the food is hot, that's it. There is no need for times or specific Temps, the food was already cooked, it just needed to be heated up again- aka the food needed to be hot and that was it

@@InvincibleMage untreated neurodivergency has an entire spectrum of symptoms and manifests differently depending on the individual, the major indicator is if they are aware of it or if their memory legitimately gets foggy. Normally this behaviour is caught earlier on but some people have the privilege of being carried through tasks by others and only when they are on their own does their life fall apart. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt but I totally see how this was pure sloth and not even an exorcism would cure that toxic disrespect.

Hot take on that first story: Not petty or passive aggressive at all. When she tried to talk to him about it, she's cast as the bad guy or "naggy wife/girlfriend". When she did things his way/complied, all she did was recenter the narrative on his behavior/standard, which he realized he didn't like. I wouldn't even call that one malicious compliance, just a negotiation of standards taken to extremes, which he brought upon himself.

Working in retail, and even at my current job, Malicious Compliance is and was my go-to method to get my point across. I make it a point to do my work in a way that my bosses can trust that what I'm doing is correct, to the best of my ability. When someone comes along and wants me to do more or do it in another way that makes no sense and I know will fail, I'll ask if they're sure and then go right along with their plan TO A 'T' with zero deviation.

In highschool I was dress coded for my shorts being too short. I'm very tall with long legs and arms. The rule was shorts must be fingertip length. Granted the shorts I was wearing were not technically in dress code but they were perfectly appropriate (my mother would never let me out of the house if they weren't). Anywho, I got called to the office and was told I had to change or go home. It just so happened that we had a track meet that day and I had my uniform shorts and I asked if I could wear those instead of going home to change. The office couldn't tell me no because they were a school issued uniform but the uniform shorts (that I wore the rest of the day) were about two inches shorter than the shorts I had worn to school 😂

But when my sister and I were like 4/5 (we're twins) we were screaming fighting with each other and my mom came up to yell at us and she looked at me and said, "Corie Anne, not another word out of you." So then like 5 minutes later she asked us what we wanted for dinner and my sister answered, but I didnt. My mom, already mad, said "Corie Anne answer me when I'm talking to you." and I said back, "but mom you said not another word." Sooo…I started being a sarcastic ass at a very young age

the cursed ring story...In my head, this is how MIL meant for it to play out... 1 )OP comes home and can't find ring. Stresses about it, looks for it, but doesn't admit that she lost it. 2) MIL "finds" the ring and gives it to son, meanwhile trash talking OP. Like, "why would she take it off"..."she's probably hiding something"..."isn't it weird that she didn't tell you it's missing" 3) Son confronts OP and they fight/break up. But when OP immediately questions about it...she just came up with the "took it to get cleaned" story.

Here's an example of toxic malicious compliance: Some days when I get home from work, I usually like to be left a lone for a little bit. I am a house Cleaner and some days it can be an 8a-6p. I'll get home only to be smothered by my boyfriend, and sometimes I'm just not in the mood and need to decompress. I even cook dinner for us when I get home as well. It also usually happens when I'm PMSing so it's not always constant. I'm a pretty open communicator and relayed to him that some days I just want to be left alone for a bit and lay in bed, absorbing my day. He, instead of laying low and not being physically all over me, decided to just flat out IGNORE me, not looking at me and not responding to me when I talk to him. Pretended like I wasn't there, even AFTER I had my decompression time. I even caught him saying under his breath "I'm just gonna ignore...". All I wanted was some space to breath after a long day but he turned it into something more, something that I would definitely consider malicious.

College weight room employee here, we have an anti-cutoff/tank top rule as well, but it’s because the loose edges of a cutoff are more likely to get caught in a machine, or for your fingers to get caught in the shirt when lifting, so it’s a safety thing. It was also because it’s unsanitary since your sweaty skin would be in direct contact with the bar/bench, and most people don’t properly sanitize the equipment.

My mom’s had her stone swapped. It was a beautiful diamond ring with diamonds all around and i LOVE that ring. When doing chores one day one of the diamonds popped off, luckily it was at home (and the diamonds are pretty big) so she found the diamond and went to a jeweler to get it fixed. One day when getting her nails done she noticed one of the diamonds shined blue under the uv light, she went to another jeweler and they confirmed it was fake, and that the jeweler probably kept the real deal to themselves and replaced it with a fake stone. Unfortunately we never got the real one back as the jeweler denied having anything to do with it.

Like I was asking him to help me change the bedsheets and use the little under the mattress clips to hold the fitted sheet. He just goes "I don't know how. as an European, the culture of allowing parents to be involved in someone else's private life seems extremely strange to me. If my MIL would have taken my ring, firstly my husband would have said smth to her (I put it nicely here) and secondly I would have yelled at her on how can she even allow herself to touch my stuff, who gave her permission to even touch it. and my husband will not allow her to ever enter in our household ever again if she does not contain herself or if she does not act properly. I am his family, not his parents. There is no need of parental approval needed in the European culture. I’m in the US, and this wouldn’t fly in my house, either. Nobody would have the opportunity to steal my ring, but if this happened, I told my husband I would have water-boarded his mom until I got my ring back. A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I sat together and made a weekly chore chart for this reason. It has essentially eliminated the tit for tat mentality. Chores are only m-f so weekends are all chill. Every day is assigned one area, example Monday is living room, Tuesday is bathrooms etc. Every day has 4 chore options like dust, clean, mop, wash specific things. We each choose two things a day, no assigned tasks just pick two things and do it Whatever two things are left for the day are your tasks if the other two are checked off as completed. We can work ahead and save chores for another day and stack them to do later in the week if not feeling well. This has also made the overwhelming feeling of a whole day designated to clean essentially disappear. Might not work for everyone but it works for us so thought I’d share!

The first one is hilarious. She tried to communicate properly, it didn't work, so she came up with a way to show him that she's not always going to fix things for him and that there's reasons for her "too high standards". If he's going to use weaponized incompetence than I feel like it's fair to do what she did back, if that can be called malicious compliance. Also my stepsister used to always tell me it was better when I made kraft dinner (boxed mac n cheese) for her so I'd always make it which I realize now was a ploy 😂

Last story, future MIL got the drama she asked for. On the ring story, I think the MIL took the ring to cause drama that she can use against OP. That's why she claimed she was having it cleaned, technically a nice thing, and claming she forgot where. That way OP would get mad and make a scene, but MIL would claim she was just trying to be nice. Thus ruining the relationship, that seems like her goal. I don't think she approves of the engagement.

I'm so thankfull for the pelvic floor therapy after birth. In Germany we also get that after every child. I have 3 kids (born in a span of 4 years) and no problems whatsoever. There's of course also other factors that influence incontinence, so I know I got lucky too. For most women the postpartum therapy is enough, but as a GP I can also prescribe more specialized pelvic floor PT for those who need it, and after that, most problems are gone or at least improved a lot. Our pelvic floors are so underestimated and should be taken care of and trained no matter if you have kids or are pregnant.

I’ve had several pelvic floor issues after a baby but sadly I live in the US. Even my physical therapy for my hips wasn’t fully covered when they were in pain 24/7 during the end of, and after, pregnancy. I have had pain during sex, vaginal prolapse, and incontinence after delivering my 8 lb son. This was 4+ years ago and now one of the three symptoms has resolved, but I’m still left with the other two. I’m so disappointed in American healthcare.

I took a medication that paralyzed my bladder muscles and I had to use completely different muscles and push so hard that I popped vessels in my eyeballs. Couldn’t go any other way and had no idea for 3 months that it was a huge deal. Years later, I had a prolapse and my bladder tried to escape. Years after that, now I could wet myself if i cough too hard. Wish that had been more public information 13 years ago.

I am currently going through similar chore struggles with my partner. Except, he isn't trying to play dumb or anything. He just doesn't do the cleaning or cooking and I end up doing it. And then when I nag him he says it feels like he is living with his mother. I feel like he subconsciously TURNED me into his mother and just doesn't see it.

Malicious compliance actually usually isn’t toxic and here’s why; most of the time you HAVE to comply to some degree. If it’s a boss u have to listen to, u often can’t say no or discuss with them, u have to say yes in order to keep ur job. The power dynamic is not equal, so in this way, you can express your frustration/opinion with a policy or with the way u are treated without getting repercussions. If it was an equal power dynamic, that’s when this pettiness can be toxic because it’s being used in replace of communication. The first story with the girlfriend also falls into this category even though they have an equal power dynamic bc she can’t entirely not comply bc she still need to live in her house and do chores or else her quality of life would suffer.

I like malicious compliance when it's in the workplace, OP has DOCUMENTED on email and screenshots that they told a manager or someone higher up that this is a bad idea to do, they were ignored. And then it backfired on the higher-up and the higher-up got fired because the OP exposed that this only turned out so bad because the higher-up didn't listen to their warnings. In that form, it's not passive aggressive at all. You literally have to do what your boss tells you, even if it's stupid.

Alright so Morgan wanted examples of toxic malicious compliance, and I just wanna point out that malicious compliance is also used by toxic people as a way for you to never ask them to adjust their behaviour. So here's my story. My sister was notorious for using malicious compliance to get what she wanted. One example (amongst a lot of others), my sister would never come to you when she needed to talk to you, she'd always make you go to her. When we lived together, my room was in the basement, and she was upstairs, if she needed to talk to you, she would shout at you from a floor away and if you couldn't hear her, or if you didn't run to her like a puppy being called, she would be pissed off and end up screaming and ranting about being ignored. So one time, when I was in my room, I hear her shouting full sentences of something through the floor at me. I end up texting her and telling her that if she needs to talk to me, she can come downstairs. So when she does come downstairs, she's just full on holding a long scream, picture a little kid with their mouth opened, screaming "ahhhhhhhh" at the top of their lungs, basically just screaming until they got what they wanted. And when I tried to talk to her, she would just interrupt me with another long scream. When I asked her what she was doing, she'd simply reply "Well, you couldn't hear me without me coming downstairs". After that, every time she needed to talk to me, she would do this. So this is what toxic malicious compliance looks like. All I did was ask her to change a simple behaviour, and she made it so unbearable that I wouldn't want to ask her to change her behaviour again. She was in her late 20s/early 30s when this happened by the way.

Lauren’s walkout story is very similar to one that happened at my school: the school was a circular shape with a big cafeteria right in the middle, and the principal’s office opened onto the cafeteria.
