Clubs look good and perform like they should. Getting riled up about the lofts and lower spin isn't really the point here since the only players getting fit into irons like these are the guys who need more speed and height.

It's also about the shaft length which is about 4-iron-length for this 6-iron. That's where the speed comes from. Good luck hitting target with this kind of "6-iron". People who need speed won't be able to launch 5,4,3,-iron anyway. TXG should test it on one of your "slower" guys. My guess is the cut off line is after the 6i. Plus there might be gaps on the wedge end side of the set...

Really appreciate the honest review. Many reviewers simply look at the loft and say they are a gimmick. But they don’t fly like a long iron loft, so it’s confusing for some to understand that it’s not simply a 5 iron loft in a 7 iron. I just purchased the Epic Forge Star which is very similar to this club. I hit this club in the fitting as well. Basically just trying to determine if the Epic Forge or Epic Forge Star was the better choice. For me, it came down to the Star was a few yards longer for me. To set the stage, I am 56 can carry a 10 Hcp. I have played blades pretty much my entire life. I just like the thin top line. With the Hogan blades, I have been as low as a 3 hcp back in the day. I decided today that I needed to make a change. I just don’t have the swing speed as I did 15 years ago. I still play fine, but I just don’t have the distance. When i went in to the fitting, I had my hogan Ft. Worth Blacks 6 iron. Hitting distance was about 135 to 140 total. Terrible distance. I tried these clubs and instantly the ball was landing 140 and rolling to 150. As I hit these clubs a bit more in the fitting, trading back and forth between other clubs, I would always come back to the Epic clubs. They are being ordered as apparently they are that new. I should have them in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to see what they do on the course.

What you guys should do to end the debate around "that's just a 4 iron with a 6 stamped on it" is a head-to-head with a longer, traditional-lofted iron that goes the same distance. Example, if Ian's normal 4 iron flies 215, compare the numbers to this E-19 6 iron. See if there's an advantage in stopping power (perhaps include a scientific look into the relative importance of descent angle vs spin rate). Also assess any advantages in dispersion (which appeared to be excellent with the E-19), and finally more 'subjective' things like feel & workability.

But in this case, He’s NOT able to explain, nor does he try to explain how these irons that are supposedly “6 irons with 8 stamped on them” are able to still spin at 8000 rpms in his own review. A 6 iron doesn’t spin at 8000 rpm and doesn’t peak height at 115 ft. There is something more going on.

@Chad Rittenberg I think you can adjust down in the wedges and could add another since you wouldn't need a 4 iron. Also, I think these irons are more for someone that has a swing speed around 100 than 115-120. I am curious what Ian thinks about this.

The entire loft argument is strange, especially when they just spent an entire video explaining why you shouldn’t care necessarily. Their ping power vs retro spec video tells you the same thing. So all the negative comments likely didn’t watch the video. But put that to the side, it’s not discussed much, but many of the big Japanese marketed forgings have had strong lofts for a long time. I think the fourteen brand already had 40* pitching wedges, so obviously it’s not a new concept, it’s just new to American golfers many of whom apparently don’t like to look at ball performance data, they like on-paper specs only.

But it's really not as problematic as people make it out to be. Yes, players will have no need for long irons since these 4 irons are basically what 2 irons used to be. Hence the old 2 & 3 irons will be replaced in the bag by more wedges. Players will still have clubs for each yardage range, just with different numbers stamped on them. And theoretically an advantage in dispersion (shorter shaft) or stopping power (higher apex) which is really the crux of the debate. Think it would be interesting for you to compare Epic forged 6 iron with your 5 iron and 4 iron terms of spin , peak height and landing angle, distance etc as essentially if you play the epic forged irons and face a 215 approach to the green, you will be hitting a 6 iron whereas you will be hitting a 5 iron or maybe even a 4 iron with your own set of irons and hence not really comparing apple to apple using epic 6 iron vs your own 6 iron. I tested them recently and I was hitting the epic forged 8 iron a bit longer than my existing 7 iron while the height of the epic forged 8 iron is higher than my 7 iron I.e when faced with 175 yards into the green I would normally use my 7 iron (full swing) whereas when using the epic forged 8 iron, I was swinging it easy and flew it 175-180 yards with a higher peak and more decent angle than my own 7 iron and hence landing and stopping the ball just the same. My 1980 Hogan Apex II irons are a candidate for old school lofts. The 5 iron loft is 30 degrees, with 3.5 degrees gapping up to 1 iron and down to the equalizer at 50 deg. This would be today's player 6 iron and game improvement 7 iron (or lower). I play Srixon Z765 with custom lofts (not a game improvement iron) . My Srixon 7 iron is lofted at 30 deg, a two club difference from the Apex II. In a head to head test, the Apex IIs play exactly 2 clubs shorter (Apex has a bit higher flight, but the spin is the same). Also, the Apex 5 iron has the same length as the Srixon 7 iron. So the only real difference in these players irons is the number on the bottom of the head.

How would these compare to the P790 and i500? Thanks fellas. Great video 🤟🏼

You should compare these to the Callaway x forged ut for ball speed purposes.

Everyone in the comments crying about these are a bunch of dorks. First off, theyre not just "renumbered" irons; everything about these is better: forgiveness, accuracy, height. Second, where exactly do you expect technology to go??? You cry about this but what about 460cc drivers that give all of you an unearned extra 50 yards per drive?? It's your fault is you're a handicap golfer using pro blades with the same tech from 1991. How about use the 250cc Big Bertha of 1991 as well?? Stop crying. No one's making you play 1990 player blades like you're Tiger Woods. If these are too tech heavy for you, get rid of your hybrid and 460 driver too. Your whole bag is tech. You got laser range finders, perfectly engineered hybrids, an extra 50 yards on driver and putters that hit the mark regardless what part you strike. But these are beyond the pale?? Go cry into a pillow.

Numbers are impressive, but would have been interesting to see you hit your 5iron as well. 4 degrees is a big difference

I could see myself buying the 4i or 5i to replace my hybrid easily. I was really shocked to see the consistent distances after watching the Apex Pro video last fall. The price though......SMH enough is enough.....

Nice 5-iron. That "6-iron" is 0.75 inches longer that Ian's if he plays standard length. Epic Forged 6-iron specs - 24* Loft and Length of 38.25" Callaway Rogue 5-iron specs - 23* Loft and a length of 38.25" What was the difference in club head speeds? How do we know that all the ball speed was not coming from the extra length? Aren't longer clubs harder for most golfers to use?

@Ian or Matt...there’s always the worry that a “forged” iron is always for the low handicap player...though in your prior videos you’ve kind of debunked that with modern irons. What are your thoughts on these irons in the hands of a mid/high handicap? Like in the +18-22 range? Thanks
@austinlauer19105 жыл бұрын
I don't think they get so wrapped up in classifying irons by handicap as much but more towards a player's tendencies. Remember some of their higher handicap fits they fit them into what most would say are for lower handicaps.
@stevenmott66685 жыл бұрын
Austin Lauer thanks for the reply. I’m not sure you understood my question though. Your response though exactly shows why it was asked...does the word “forged” today mean what it meant 30 years ago. Normally a forged iron was for “great players” only...a players iron and was considered too hard to hit consistently for hacks.
@austinlauer19105 жыл бұрын
@@stevenmott6668 Well it could also mean that back then those less fortunate ie not rich could not afford "forged" clubs as they were too expensive. I do understand your question though but understanding players and different tendencies has come a long way since.
@stevenmott66685 жыл бұрын
Austin Lauer totally agree. The technology avail today is amazing at diagnosing issues and helping to remedy them. I wish these guys were closer than Canada. I’m sure someone in SoCal is just as good, but if I ever found a suitcase of cash, I’d book a flight to Canada. Can I ask what your opinion is on modern forged irons? Are they for everyone as long as you have a modern fitting?
@austinlauer19105 жыл бұрын
@@stevenmott6668 I think it's an advantage for sure. It's easier to adjust them, softer feel, but may cost a bit more than cast.

These clubs sound perfect for the golfer who generates plenty of spin already and doesn't quite hit his irons, like an AP2, as far as he thinks he should based on how far he hits driver through, let's say, possibly hybrid? I could see such a player picking up 10+ yds with potently optimized spin and height, assuming they got fit for the right shaft. AT THOSE PRICES YOU BETTER BE GETTING FIT ! ! If you have spin to give, these clubs could be a game changer! There are other clubs out there that offer similar, if not quite the same performance though, that cost less... right?

I don't get it. How does the Epic E19 differ from the Apex Forged 19. Both are 1025 bodies with cup face. All the components are nearly identical. Placement of the components is nearly identical. TXG testing Apex Forged 19 6i came up with 203 yds carry (Matty) but 215 yds with Epic E19 6i. Where is the extra length coming from? Longer shaft, shaft construction, secret sauce, what? Also in the hands of a 15 index play, is this club just going to compound offline hits with the extra distance? Great review! You're the first ones with testing of this club. Good job with that!

OK, here is the difference between an Apex 19 and Epic E19 6i & 7i -- Club Loft Length Lie Offset Swing Weight Swing Weight Apex 6i 26.5* 37.50" 61.50* 3.6 D0 Graphite D2 Steel Epic 6i 24* 38.25" 60.50* 3.4 D0 - Tensei AV Silver D2 - SteelFiber Apex 7i 30.5* 37.00" 62.00* 3.0 D0 Graphite D2 Steel Epic 7i 27* 37.625" 61.00* 3.3 D0 - Tensei AV Silver D2 - SteelFiber There is no Epic 3i listed whereas there is an Apex 3i. Epic line also has an addition greenside wedge listed which is not available in the Apex. Epic lofts are general 2.5* to 3* stronger than Apex lofts. Shafts in Epic are .25" to .5" longer than in Apex. Offset differences vary from club to club. Also, Epic has a "floating" tungsten weight; Apex is not called "floating". From the blow up photos the Epics weight appears to be imbedded in a rubber like material; the Apex only has "rubber" on the clubface side. Seems to me that an Epic 7i = an Apex 6i hence an extra club distance. If you cannot hit a an Apex 4i will you be able to hit an Epic 5i??????

Am I the only one that takes exception to these multi-piece irons, where only one component of the head is forged, being labeled as "forged"? If you have to weld the face onto the iron, it isn't "forged" in my opinion.

So if I bought these... I would hit an 8 iron 180 9 170 p 160.. then wedges from 150 to 50 yds... lol.. why dont they give these clubs normal lofts....? Because of these lofts it forces me to go blades apex.. I would love to have forgiving clubs with normal loft

Sounds a tad bit cost prohibitive like PXG. A friend has a set of PXG’s. He let me hit a few balls on the range with them. Very nice clubs. Just not $5,000 a set nice.
@CyVelasCo5 жыл бұрын
Its not an iron for the general public. Callaway is trying to target that customer willing to buy PXG's, Miura's, etc... and gives them another option. And the reason why Callaway can't just make a club like this at a lower price point is becuase, the materials used and procedures used to make them cost more.

The problem I see is distance gapping at wedge and fairways. If the 6i is a 215 club, and assuming 12 yard gaps, your 7 is 203, the 8i is 191, the 9i is 179, so your PW is 167??? AW is 155, SW is 143, and your LW is 132. What's going to be your 100 yard club? Same problem in the front of the bag. Your 5i is 227 and your 4i will be 239. Your 5w must then be 251, 3w 263 and finally the driver at 275. The three wedges and the 1/3/5 woods are simply not distances the average amateur player is going to achieve. If your AW is even 130 yards, there will be a 37 yard gap between that and PW. Many sets are not made with AW/SW/LW or people tend to use a different brand of wedges from their irons. Callaway in the case of this set actually makes all the follow on wedges, so the PW is actually 41 degrees! The AW is 46, the SW 51, and finally the LW at 56 degrees. I would like to see you fit your mid handicapper with the 9i and PW in this set and the see the gap problem when going to a different brand of wedge. You would have an 11 degree gap between the PW at 41 and your standard wedge set of 52/56/60. Priced a 4-SW set on the Callaway website. A mere $3600 CDN. lol

The argument about number of wedges needed is compelling. There are some things to bear in mind. The average player Ie not Ian or Matty, is pretty inaccurate at 180 yrds plus.....you could carry 10 clubs to cover you from 180 to 230 and it would not improve your score, because you would not hit it accurately enough most of the time to sink the first putt or chip........but carrying say a 48 54 60 and 64 degree wedges and knowing your distances with full swings , 3/4, 1/2 etc .....well that helps scoring. Some will say the height these clubs go makes them a six iron, others will say the launch angle, shaft length and loft mean you are hitting a 4 iron. Me...I call a seven iron a seven iron. It has 34 degrees of loft, I carry it about 155. I could get a stronger lofted set...I would still be rubbish with them!!!
