Okay, no matter what happened with Seagal afterwards, but I don't find anything wrong with his first five or so movies. 1988-1992 was arguably his "Golden Age" (followed by a steep and drawn out decline of the kind that can only be compared to that of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires)

Under Siege was written by JF Lawton, who also wrote Pretty Woman. Andrew Davis knew the proper formula for a good Seagal movie: keep him offscreen as much as possible, and only have him do "action stuff" when he has to be onscreen. Also cast colorful character actors for the supporting roles. He did the same thing for Above The Law, and that one and Under Siege are considered two of Seagal's best movies. Davis did the same thing for the Chuck Norris movie Code Of Silence too, probably Norris' best. This takes place on the USS Missouri but was mostly shot on the USS Alabama. The Oscars it was nominated for were all in the sound categories; not surprising since the audio and audio effects in this movie are really good. The sound in the scene where the ship drops anchor? * Chef's kiss * The Mad Magazine parody of Under Siege was pretty good. At the end, the stripper is asked what it's like to kiss Seagal and she said "It was like sticking my face into a bowl of mashed potatoes."

So he was a career SEAL, lost his clearance, and became a Mess Serviceman and is instantly the BEST COOK IN THE NAVY. Also, he's a little young to be wearing a RVN Cross of Gallantry. Come on Directors - quit letting Steven choose his own awards and hire a mil tech advisor for a day!
@troodon1096

It's pretty clear they had a military advisor for a few basic things, like the appearance of US Navy uniforms and such, but the plot isn't the most realistic otherwise. Best advice is either just exercise a willing suspension of disbelief when it comes to the supposed military backgrounds of fictional characters. I did find myself wondering why a Navy Seal that lost his clearance would choose to continue serving in the Navy, or why he'd be allowed to serve even if he was so willing but... this is just a dumb action movie, not a documentary of the life of an actual Navy Seal, so I was willing to give that a pass. This movie twists logic in many more ways than that.

"It's not a job! It's an adventure!" was a Navy recruitment slogan, probably shoe-horned in since they helped fund the film and provide sets etc. And the head movements as he delivers it....probably his most passionate line delivery ever. XD Also, how does anyone think this is a Die Hard knockoff? Did they forget the 1 Man Army trope has existed for quite some time because they both only share the same superficial aspects of that, beyond that they're almost completely different.

The real star of this film are the two ships they filmed it on. An actual chance for us to see what a Battleship was truly like. Although that wasn't a 16" gun firing. There's no way you could stand on deck, that close to the turret as it fires and the only consequence being a mild hairdry.... you'd he fricasseed... that's why sailors wear anti flash gear when they fire them!. Anyway, it's fascinating to see an actual battleship.

According to Ericka, she was 16 or 17 when making this movie. Steven apparently pulled her aside to give her a "theraputic massage" or her chest region and invited her back to his trailer. When she explained to him that she was only 16 or 17, Steven replied, "In some countries, that is old enough to be married." That is when Ericka screamed for her Mother and her Mother never let her out of her sight for the rest of the filming of the movie. *UPDATE* This is incorrect. It wasn't this movie or this actress. It was actually Katherine Heigl on Under Siege 2 that made this claim against Seagal.

I love moments like at 6:30, the flagrant almost purposeful attempt at firing your weapons to make it MORE difficult to hit your target is a hallmark of Seagal. Why the hell not cross them over each arm to fire in a V-pattern at each wall in a tight hallway? Is he ricocheting rounds off each side to get style points? Probably yes.
@monkchips
@monkchips 2 жыл бұрын
Come on, the weapons wrangler in this film must have been drunk for the whole film. Who in their right mind would bring a machine pistol with a 1200 rpm firing rate onto a ship? I suppose ricochetting is a valid idea. 25 rounds a second. So a 32 round mag is gone in 1.28 seconds. That bag he had better hold every magazine on earth to keep up this firefight.

There were so many things that make this movie such a great movie. The cast was definitely great. I think it had the most tasteful nudity of the entire 1990s. And if you ever go to pearl Harbor you can walk around on that very ship. If you don't see it for yourself it's impossible to imagine the size of that ship and those guns.

I watched this for the first time a few months ago really wanting to love it, but as a Marine, I could not handle not just the military inaccuracies, but the deeply insulting portrayal of how absolutely useless and incapable an entire SHIP of sailors and Marines are against a few random civilian ‘mercenaries’ hipfiring at everyone. I feel like Seagal almost directed this with a deep feeling of little man syndrome since he never actually served, so went out of the way to talk down to/belittle all the military members throughout the movie

The mercs had fully automatic weapons and the sailors and marines had no firearms of any sort (the corrupt officers saw to that). What can anyone do against that? It is ridiculous that Seagal's character could take on so many of them but unarmed people being no match for machine guns is surely accurate.

During the scene where Segal stabs Tommy Lee in the head with a knife, the guy next to me says, dedpan, "That would not happen". I say "What?" "That wouldn't happen, the knife would bend." "Okay...how do you know?" "I've stabbed a guy in the top of the head once." "wut?" "Yeah, i stabbed my wife's brother in the head." "WUT?" "Yeah, we had an argument and he got in his car to drive away but I wasn't done so I pulled out my knife and stabbed him in the head and the knife bent." "WUT THA FUCK?" "Yeah, the knife bend so I straightened it out on my arm, I had my arm around his neck and he was trying to drive away. He dragged me down the street a little way and I straightened it out on my arm and kept stabbing him." "oO" "Yeah, he crashed the car and lost a lot of blood and I went to jail but my wife waited for me to get out and never cheated on me. I know it’s been 2 years, but I cannot resist, probably because I use them daily. At 5:53 that is a cutting torch. An actual arc welder fuses metal together, a torch melts it and the handle is concentrated air to blow the melted metal out of the area which simulates the “cutting”. Now you can weld with a torch, but that would be called “braze welding” which I guarantee that is not what he was “doing”. I’m pretty sure you probably won’t see this comment so this was probably a waste of time typing this out but I love your channel, it brings me laughter when I need it most, so thanks

The funniest movie line is also an irony: Gary Buesy accusing someone of being a psychopath. If this ironic joke was intentional, bravo. It's too bad that Seagal got a goatee. He actually has a good look without it. Having said that, I always feel bad for the women in these movies. Only just hotties without any plot relevance.

Here Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones make the mistake of staging a mutiny and heist on a Navy ship with a graduate of the Cordon Bleu School Of Kicking Ass In Movies on board, Steven Seagal. Finally an action movie with a subordinate somewhere who isn't a bumbling incompetent.

I noticed that overall audio levels of your videos are inconsistent in parts with your comments/voiceover. For example, I watched your Half Past Dead review just now, and that one is way louder than this one. Not complaining, just to let you know, perhaps it's something that needs to be looked into and fixed. Keep up the awesome work, been enjoying your content very much 👍

The only thing scarier than Gary Busey is Gary Busey in drag. Legit nightmare fuel right there. Haven't been that creeped out since Michael Caine in "Dressed to Kill." (which, strangely, sounds like a potential Seagal movie, where maybe he infiltrates the dangerous world of New York's fashion scene. Who can forget his iconic line "I'm just a tailor.")

I saw this Thanksgiving Night on a double-bill with Passenger 57. Isn't there a reference in this movie to the bad guys making stock trades based on what they're doing-because every Andrew Davis movie has at least a reference to Chicago if it's not set in Chicago? I think this is the point in Seagal's career in which he still had the potential to expand his acting skills and diversify the roles he was playing. Had he remained humble, and smart he could have avoided becoming the clown he eventually became by the early 2000s

The USS Missouri was indeed decommissioned in 1992, and its last voyage was to Ford Island in Hawaii (it's very close the the Arizona Memorial), where it has since been a permanent museum exhibit. Why it would be carrying nuclear weapons on its last voyage to be decommissioned, er... not sure how plausible that would be.

You can tell most of the scenes shot on the Alabama by the incandescent light bulb fixtures in the overhead. When Missouri was re-activated in the eighties she got the Navy standard florescent light fixtures. I think they even tacked a few of the new fixtures up on Alabama for continuity purposes.

I remember watching this at the appropriate age of 10. For some reason I found the violence in his movies so goddamn overboard and cruel, that it's somehow hilarious. When Steven Seagal for example kicks that dude in the nuts / throws the guy into a running bandsaw? Totally necessary. When Gary Busey spits dramatically in his soup, and that sourpuss face on Seagal? Priceless and got me crying laughing as a kid.

Under Siege turns 30! Made $157 million worldwide and got nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Sound (it lost to The Last of the Mohicans) and Best Sound Editing (which it lost to Bram Stoker's Dracula) Sold lots of VHS copies too Stinks it's not on Amazon prime video even though it says it's for free on that streaming platform From the same writer who did 'Pretty Woman' Steven Seagal, Erika Elianik, Tommy Lee Jones, and Gary Busey Basically 'Die Hard' on a ship but it became the first film of the 90s to financially utilize the formula successfully Seagal isn't a very good actor but he has his expert fight choreography to make up for it and the villains are entertaining Plus Elianik gets to show she's intelligent than rather be dumb eye candy (she actually was a real playmate in real life) The climax feels a bit rushed and some depth is missing from the script along with subplots that make no sense However it has fun action, good atmosphere making the viewer feel just as trapped, terrific cinematography, good sense of scale, and a decent time killer despite its formulaic structure Good for macho man streamers looking for testosterone fueled thrills

At the end, that is one of the worst, cringe-worthy, on-screen military salutes in the history of films. They couldn't have gotten an advisor to spend 5-minutes teaching Seagal how to do a passable salute?

That was supposed to be a salute?!? I thought he was just blocking the sun from his eyes…. But seriously, you are completely right! You think they could have asked someone working the USS Alabama (the ship used for filming) how to salute properly. Or maybe they did and Seagal, as proven by his career, ignored it!
