I'm a physician and it's frustrating for me to have most of my colleagues not in agreement that pornography is a severe addiction, even though it has almost all the same side effects and outcomes as heavy drug users/alcoholics every day. I have had men come in my practice with ED in their 20s and ask them about porn usage which they almost always say they have been doing. Testosterone work ups always normal. None of them realize its effects. I hope you keep growing so that the scientific community can get on the same page. An addiction is an addiction and affects your growth and functioning regardless of what that addiction is. You are truly paving the way in addiction medicine my friend.

ED is not a problem. If it stops worthless males from procreating that can only be a good thing.
@voltinator2 жыл бұрын
Urges to use porn excessively is due to touch starvation. Men innately crave the touch of women and find their bodies erogenous. Women know their skin is valuable as they often defer to it when they are accused for wrongdoing, they want to touch the accuser to sway them to their side. Same with disappointment, women often hug each other because their skin communicates a lot of sensory soothing. The reason for the massive spike in porn is due to the fact that men want to feel the skin of females but most females won't allow them to. Porn addiction is fundamentally touch starvation by amorous males who seek to connect to females but are discouraged in their efforts. Males retreat to porn when they fail the dating game enough times. When females control the mating process to the degree they do in the modern era many males go without female touch, thus they seek porn in order to fill the gap in their lives. The dopamine fix is supposed to make males pair bond with females but this is not happening because the females are not allowing it. The dopamine trap is a symptom of the problem, not the root cause. The root cause is due to a society that places undue importance on catering to female whims. Correcting dopamine traps does not address the actual cause of all of this dismay: Too much female empowerment which women seem to ultimately use to control the mating process. This can be seen in downward trends in child rearing, higher ages of first marriage and higher ages of first time mothers. Women are delaying everything to their timetable while the men need sex throughout their lives. By infantilizing the mating game between the genders and making women perpetual victims they soon find that they gain total bargaining power over a mating process that used to be more balanced. Soon enough flirtation, which is a biological process at its heart, becomes over-regulated by females who now have the ability to ruin the lives of males that do not flirt appropriately and leaves many males with no experience whatsoever with females. This is what leads to many females abandoning sexual roles such as partnering up and motherhood. What this means for the males is that few males are given the ability to connect to females on a personal level, instead being banished by threats of punishment if they even attempt.

@Dr. Trish Leigh , I've been struggling with this type of stuff since I was very young. Been listening to your content. Good stuff. You presented something in another video about "rewiring" (to deal with anxiety) which I think may help me quite a bit regarding self-soothing. You used an analogy about paths (neural pathways), about stopping the use of the old/bad ones and making new ones. I'm an OTR trucker, home on weekends, with too much alone time during the week. Today, it came to me that the self-soothing path is a road that needs repair into a road of intimacy with my lovely, patient wife of over thirty years. Whenever I'm tempted to self-soothe, I now see the road as closed, barricaded by big orange signs. To a trucker, that means there's no way you're using that road. The only flagger with the authority to open the road, as I see it, is my lovely wife, so I might travel the repaired road of intimacy with her and her alone. Thanks so much for the content! Keep up the good work!! Wish me luck in my "travels" 🙂

Good luck on your travels my friend. I work with many people who drive a truck… It is definitely a more challenging lifestyle… But not impossible. So these urges are basically "misplaced desires" that are emerging as sexual urges when in fact they are just our brain calling to regulate our mood - it's not about sex at all? Whenever I felt negative emotions such as stress, boredom, loneliness, frustration, I always resorted to porn to soothe myself, so my brain has been "conditioned" and associated these negative emotions with sexual release just like the Pavlovian classical conditioning. So basically I've trained my brain (unknowingly) to "sexualize normal human feelings" which are now coming up as sexual urges?. You have just confirmed something that I've suspected. This is truly insightful and I cannot thank you enough Dr. Trish

Around 12 I started watching porn whenever I had the room to myself, and I do remember the anticipation being the most exciting thing ever 😅 I don’t have any of the issues people claim porn causes. I have a good sex life, but usually cum before bed and nothing is wrong about that. I think cutting off my screen time on my phone was a big factor in being able to overcome these urges because I don't allow myself to scroll on my phone as soon as I wake up and my brain used to associate p*rn with my phone and my main source of screen time is my laptop which my brain associates more with work, school and watching movies.

As simplistic as it sounds: prayer before bed I have found extremely helpful (not infallible of course). Taking that 10-15 minute time (for me standing) is sometimes the last thing I feel like doing; but it sends me to bed in a much better frame of mind than scrolling does. A free app I use is called Universalis, which gives prayers throughout the day (called the liturgy of the hours). The one I say before bed is called Compline and takes 10-15 minutes to pray through.

I'm in DBT therapy though and self-soothe is literally a part of distress tolerance. Of course these are methods that aren't sexual but we need to self-soothe it's so important. Taking that warm bath or burning insense for example is nesseary to calm down. I don't understand why someone who is trying to not do sexual things can't turn to other healthy self-soothe methods? Without self-soothing that's just a life punishment.

Especially as someone who has worked a lot on himself and through meditation, it feels great to know that we can choose to not be victims to this mindset. Everybody needs to self soothe. You can’t be by yourself for an extended period of time away from your partner and just Not. -You could time and plan your needs. It’s a matter of substitution.

Thank you Dr Trish , this video is so helpful. I started my journey the day I first bumped into one of your videos I am on day 8 , though it’s a tough journey but the results are astounding . I am more energetic and positive in mind than ever before. That was when I realised that porn is a secret mind destroyer. When I feel an urge to watch these filthy videos, I play one of your videos and when you begin digging the dangers of porn, those urge go away. Porn free life is a healthy one Thanks Dr Trish

This is a great video, is there a list of known things that the brain can get dopamine from?

I appreciate that you give a goal to move towards and paint a picture of what that would look like, my authentic self. I've also made secure attachment style a goal to move towards.

Okay, so when does one realize that they actually want to have sex? And if so, how is a person able to differentiate between wanting to genuinely have sex vs mood regulation?
@gideonokobru93693 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, sex is also a means for mood regulation. I believe what Dr T.Leigh is saying is you can replace sex or PMO with another less harmful source of dopamine
@DrTrishLeigh3 жыл бұрын
When you compulsively go towards sex and are hyper sexual you are using it mostly for mood regulation. When you learn your triggers and stop depending upon sex to regulate your mood then you can feel genuinely sexual. It takes time and self-awareness to discern.

I'm almost 3 weeks into nofap and I still get quite intense sexual fantasies in the morning or even in the night when I wake up. I try to not to get immersed in them but sadly it doesn't always wok out, but at least I don't touch myself. I hope I can overcome this sooner than later. At least now I understand why I get these fantasies in the morning (during the day that's almost never the problem). Thanks for the video!

People need to self soothe. You can’t just take that away. When people are away, things are going to get hairy, and they may have fear, anxiety, sadness, or loneliness, and you can’t just say “you can’t self soothe” There’s always a substitution. If I were married, I would literally just focus on my wife. I am ULTRA SIMPLE (a woman’s needs would literally meet mine ) If she needed something, there’s nothing wrong with her watching porn.
