Lufthansa being a 5-stars airline is a big discussion on every occasion the name comes up. But no one can deny those pilots are 5-stars everytime they have an issue with their plane. From Kennedy-Steve ("I'll look at it myself") to non-emergency-engine-breakdowns ("we're not declaring emergency") to that awful ATC in Colombia. This is one of the downsides to super-long range non-stop flights: when they have a problem immediately after takeoff, the amount of fuel they have to dump becomes greater and greater. 1:22 when you have the close up of the radar screen. The point that the plane would be at is a letter. In the case of the LH flight it is a "U". I also see "W" and "B". What do these letters represent?
@Reboyo14 жыл бұрын
I'm completely going to be making a guess just based on their clumping against the atc map in the background, but I think it's code for which controller is handling them. All the W's seem to be bunched around the landing pattern for the airport, and all the U's seem to be bunched around departure end. Later in the video, when it's in the landing pattern, the LH flight does change to a W. The G's look like they're all in the landing pattern for another airport, and the B's seem to be at a higher altitude, so I'm guessing another controller that's handling the higher altitude airspace.

Before anybody jumps all over me with this question, and I know it’s for safety, who pays for the dumping of the fuel for the cleanup if this would be any other industry and they dumped fuel they would be responsible for the costs of the cleanup and possibly fines does that exist in the airline industry. Second question this is happened in the past where they’ve actually dumped fuel over a populated area I live approximately 1 mile from an airport is there something I should know when it comes to planes dumping fuel.
@Reboyo14 жыл бұрын
Jet fuel, when dumped at the correct height, evaporates, or as the comments section says probably more correctly, atomizes as it's being exposed to the atmosphere outside of the plane. Cleanup is typically not necessary as there's just nothing to clean up. In Delta's case with LAX, they're going to end up paying for cleanup, or more likely their insurance company is going to be paying. Fuel dumping isn't something done on a regular basis, only in those situations when the plane is over it's maximum weight to land so it doesn't break the landing gear. When it is done, it's usually done over sparsely populated or unpopulated areas. At 1 mile from a major airport, I doubt you'd ever see any fuel dumping overhead. If you lived on a farm like 20 miles out from a major airport, you might see it happen overhead at some point unless your house is in the landing pattern. Also, on a side note, not all planes can dump fuel, so those that can't, would go in to a holding pattern for a while to just use the fuel up until they're at landing weight.
@mikethewoodworker61944 жыл бұрын
Reboyo thank you for the explanation I always wondered, no luckily I am not in a landing pattern but I can see them go by but not overhead. Very small airport YQG, Air Canada is pretty much the only major airline in the winter time we get the odd ball airline that flies to Cuba and Mexico

I wonder what route the aircraft would have taken to Munich. Would it be over the Arctic via Russia or the other way over Atlantic?
@afcgeo8824 жыл бұрын
Sai Yamanoor Russia? No... They fly over Northern Canada in an Easterly direction, then over Greenland, Iceland, Norway and southeast toward Denmark and Germany to Munich. That is the typical East-Bound Atlantic corridor. If flown directly north out of San Francisco, over the pole and then straight south, you’d come out by Samara in Russia, which is a bit too far East, so they fly NorthEast instead. There are also sufficient diversion points in between this way. The arctic region has very few diversion points.

Remember Swissair 111 heavy? The flight out of JFK, destined for Geneva, that had a fire break out in the concealed space just aft of the cockpit? They diverted to an alternate airport on the eastern coast of Canada, but first they requested vectors to dump fuel, following protocol. Unfortunately, the fire had already spread out of control and the plane went down into the Atlantic before they were even able to begin the fuel dump. All souls aboard were lost. There was a lot of armchair quarterbacking in the comments section. One argument that was made was something along the lines of "f**k the environmentalists, I would have been dumping fuel all over the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada!" I have a suspicion that those Delta pilots flying into LAX had that same disregard for protocol, being from Georgia and all. And they probably had the same cavalier attitude (regarding California and it's reputation for environmental protection and health). I bet those 2 in the cockpit were laughing the whole time, knowing that they would get away with it - operating under declared emergency as they were. Those 2 buffoons are the exception, not the rule. It doesn't have to be Lufthansa, it can be any airline that follows protocol, requests vectors to dump fuel over unpopulated areas and at the appropriate altitude. Honestly, a lot of the comments on this one do make me laugh though. It's the sort of perverse laughter thinking about intentionally harming the people and environment with carcinogenic jet fuel mist and knowing that they won't face any consequences for the harm they cause. It's not about Delta vs Lufthansa. It's about people piloting a commercial aircraft who can follow protocol.
