Vera does eventually get a foster mom. (: Their instagram is a little more up-to-date (the footage in the youtube videos tends to be a couple weeks or so behind). Can't wait to see the video of her getting "adopted" though; I know they had to get a little bit creative to get her comfortable around the older monkeys. I'll probably legitimately cry when that video comes out.

Why are some babies released without bonding to a foster mom, like Nala, and others don't, like Vera? What difference in behavior are you looking for to determine who is released without a foster mom? Acorn was the only one remotely interested in Vera and interacted with her in Acorn's own weird way. This has to be both heartbreaking and frustrating for you all. Has this ever happened before? Keep up the good work. I'm thinking along similar lines as @KaySmith, and wonder if there isn't something physiologically different about Vera that the older vervets can sense therefore avoid her.
@VervetMonkey
@VervetMonkey 5 жыл бұрын
there is no reason. Everything is up to the monkeys and their own individual personalities. We do not look for any specific behavior, we merely let the animals be animals and facilitate the process in the best way possible to give them the best end result possible based on what they choose to do. Thanks!

Noooo, don't leave us hanging! Oh Vera, little mommas! She is sad and lonely, its literally depressing! Is there a reason she can't go to Disneyland with the rest of the babies? I know you have a system in place and they certainly know what they are doing at the VMF but Vera is so alone and Disneyland is full of friends, some are even older than she is. Poor Vera, what would be the difference if she hung out with the cool kids instead of being alone? I assume her friend was adopted and is in her new troupe, Vera was cool with the first females and they didn't want nothing to do with her, its just strange that she doesn't like any of the other foster moms. Poor little girl they will make a wild vervet monkey out of you yet!

@VervetMonkey

Staff is only required to remove or change their shoes when entering Disneyland, this is for contamination purposes. Disneyland is deep cleaned every single night, we do not want harmful pathogens being transferred from other locations around the foundation into Disneyland and the sole of a shoe is a great way for that to happen.

What do you find when a baby does not pick a preference and enters the troupe alone (or no mother picks her or shows good interest?) Does the baby tend to finally pick someone - maybe a female that never came near the intro enclosure or is it more often the not that the baby stays as a single just going to the nearest receptive female in the case of an extreme need? Does it happen more often that not that after a few days in the main compound the baby does find a preferred female but have you had many that just stayed unattached and has that lead to issues down the line? I assume that if things go wrong when one is released unattached the feeding cage is a backup safe spot if there is no staff around top open the door in the event of an emergency and need for safety from older troupe members? Aslo, what do you consider when in the process of pairing mothers and babies one does not pair up and you choose to release them alone. if they let you make the decision and not be like Nala and just make it happen? What goes into the process of deciding that one will be fine if released alone while no matter its just not practical to do it with another? Vera has me stumped. She does act like she does not want to be touched by another monkey but is this do to a trauma from another monkey propr to her abandonment or because when first brough to meet some monkeys the first introductions went badly and they seemed to reject her - now is she rejecting first? Even with some of your most experienced fosters moms who have cornered and placated other upset babies even when first rejected none of them seemed to want to follow through. At first it seemed they were rejecting Vera but maybe she was giving them signs not to try and she has been rejecting along but the big question is why. I understand that she was young when abandoned and that the story goes that the troupe abandoned her from what you were told. Was she on of the golf course abandoned babies? Some babies can be pretty standoffish and even belligerent when first introduced but a mom that is interested will force herself into the situation and if nothing else make the baby accept it. And I have seen you introduce moms that have done that last year as well as this year so your moms know the game so they should have known to do that but they don't seem challenged by the rejection and more of an attitude of 'didn't really want you to start with so if you don't want me it no big deal'. Its an odd attitude as having a baby is a big deal usually and there has to be some signal or something about Vera that is making this happen. Had she been in a home as a pet and strongly bonded to a human or a household pet I could see this - that she just wants back to what she thinks of as home and nothing where is is now is acceptable. One time we had a family gave up their infant monkey because of their dog. The baby monkey (not a vervet this time) never connected with any of the human members, basically rejecting any of their attention but from day on was fixated on their dog and, while the dog was a nice guy and cooperated he was not necessary thrilled apparently with a baby hanging on him constantly. Given that they could do nothing with the monkey that did not make it screamed bloody murder unless they made the dog stand right next to the baby. The dog could not even go out to do his business or baby had to go or screamed the whole time he was out. Not a good life for a dog, I agree, let alone baby money. The family decided it was not fair for the dog and so brought the baby to a rescue and the baby was then funneled through a few interim shelters before her. She actually was grief stricken and would not eat and cried constantly and this behavior had gone on since she was turned over. The other stops along the way were at a loss on how to comfort her and she was having to be force fed to get any milk into her. She really acted like babies we see traumatized by a mother dying and then being left with a dead body for a day or more. So we knew she had a strong bond with someone and we assumed a family members but with constant attention normally we will usually see a bond shift but she was not interested in humans or any shifting of her bond. We even tried all the no-no from pacifiers to blankes to swaddling and keeping her in bed with someone. Nothing worked. . So tried an emergent attempt, a process we ahve used now and then when we had a very young baby that was not doing well without a monkey mother, to interest her in a monkey adult (as we have a couple of adults that will willing care even if we are in the teaching inclosure teaching feeding and, in her case, having to initially force feeding as she had to eat, so lots of humans coming and going. But these couple will tolerate it and will stay as long as we wanted til baby was old enough to transition and not get cabin fever - or at least not too badly if the nibble bowl are kept full. The baby was horrified when we brought an adult in and got so overwrought and worked herself up into passing out. We removed the adult and life after that was worse as when she even saw a monkey in the distance, hard not to do here, she would literally have a panic attack. She had to have anti anxiety meds at that point and 3 sides of her area had to be blocked so she was not seeing monkeys all the time but now and then one would pass on the open side - sometimes to far away for us to even notice - but she would. She was a major question mark and a conundrum until the day I brought my dog to work with me. He comes with me now and then if he was slated for a vet visit later in the day especially. He, like many of the staff dogs, has been around monkeys since he was a puppy and gets along well and they seem to be okay with him, they mostly act like they are dealing with even weird humans but a monkey is usually good for a treat.. This baby saw him when I was walking by her area and her carer said it was unbelievable. She said when the baby saw the dog she did all she could to throw herself through the wall and get to the dog, screaming and crying and giving every baby signal in the world that she was calling mom for help, that she was lost and finally found mom. They said it was totally unbelievable. Anyway, that was the key and we dug around and finally had contact with her original family and found out about their dog. My dog was too old and had some medical issues and was not in any shape to deal with an energetic baby monkey, although he did spend part of the day with her, while we found another, and she basically took a bottle for the first time and then slept the sleep of the exhausted. We got a color and size description of the original dog and then started trying to match some staff's dog. Actually, turned out it very quickly that it did not have to even look the same - any dog would do. The original dog was a black lab mix with a lot of mix and she ended up very happy, later that afternoon, with a Goldendoodle. It was then a long process of allowing the dog be part of all that had to happen to get her to accept monkeys but given that he was great with monkeys she accepted them as he did and that went a long way. She eventually made it into a community and as long as now and then some dog comes around to visit through the fence it all works (we actually now have a few rescue dogs on the campus now). But yeah, odd things happen and who knows what gets in their heads sometimes and not knowing what is in there you can make heads or tails of the behavior and why she would be rejecting something that she should want by instinct. The big problem with Vera, is that you may have to face, is that even when older and she could fend for herself and be introduced with a group joining back into a community with other babies the first problem is will she would still have a period of time where she had to tolerate other monkeys and have some involvement in what they are doing for sometime in a intermediate shelter with adults and babies, at least until they are ready to be promoted. And then what happens if she goes in the main troop with them still just as antisocial as she has been, and starts rejecting every monkey she sees or they all detect on her what issues the others have. That she could be brought to where she would follow a few moms and their babies into the main troupe does not guaranteed any acceptance from the troupe without a mom vouching for her and if she continues the behavior if rejecting first or it can't be discovered what other monkey's are seeing that is wrong so they want nothing to do with her - she is going to be lower than the lowest new male from outside the troupe. She may not even get accepted with the bottom most ranklings but actually be considered more of an outlier (odd position for a female) or a out caset altogether. She could just be in the wrong place at the wrong time and end up being the target of someone having a bad day and needing to take it out on that the troupe will not care if she is badly wounded or killed. Has she shown any interest in bonding with another baby and and then have humans do all possible to make that a nearly impossible bond to break - that baby that will keep close to her even if a foster mom gets in the picture and then find a foster that wants a baby badly enough that it will accept a sibling like hanger on even if she is not going to officially take both. Maybe at least Vera would have a bond with the other baby and maybe able to survive in the shadow of her friend and her friend's foster mother and appear to be more protected then she will probably be.

Vera rejected the moms ? I thought the moms had each rejected her ? Yeah , I’d understood that each one had approached her , sniffed her , and moved on ? What am I not understanding ?

How do you acquire foster moms?

They are past rescues, and members of the permanent troops kept at the sanctuary. Since the males are sterilized, new babies aren't born into the troops, but many of the females still have the maternal instincts required to foster. There are certain moms that come back to foster year after year, but any female, as she matures has the opportunity to become a foster mom. I think they also take the troop hierarchy into consideration, as much as possible.

Quiet Inspiration (Heidi) Awesome, recyclable moms! 😃👍How long on average after a mom and adopted orphan are released to the troupe are they ready to raise another? Do they just come back to the enclosures and hang out? Are they marked somehow for identification purposes or do you keep a catalog of detailed pictures?

@@thorobredfeedsales3934 I'm not there or part of the VMF, just a huge fan and advocate, but as far as I know, they have over 500 vervets living in massive enclosures, each enclosure housing a troop, and is connected to an intro enclosure, where the moms and babies meet. The majority of their rescues happen between November and March, after birthing season, and there are very few in the off season. By 3-4 months babies are somewhat self sufficient, and by 6 months mostly independent. Since the birthing season happens once a year, the foster moms have weaned the babies before the next season arrives, so it sort of mimics the natural order of things, except they're no actually giving birth to their babies. From year to year, we have seen many of the same moms return for a new baby, often with last years still staying close by, but no longer requiring her full attention. Hopefully Kyle will pipe in if I am wrong about anything, but I do believe they have a database (or book) of the monkey's identifying traits, to keep track, but I believe Kyle and most of the staff are able to identify the majority of the animals. I'm told that over time, just like people, certain markings, and physical traits allow them to see each one differently, just like we do with other people! Hope that helps, feel free to ask anything, I or someone else will surely have answers!🤗
