@aussiejed12 жыл бұрын
19:25 The scene in the elevator was actually a reshoot. Both actors had already moved on to other projects. Tom Cruise's hair was longer (he was shooting Color of Money) so they wet it and slicked it back to hide it, and Kelly McGillis had changed her hair completely (style and coloured brunette) so they hid it with a hat. The love scene later was also a late addition, and shot in silhouette to , again, hide McGillis's hair.

Watching this film always reminds me of one of the craziest true aviation stories EVER. In the Korean War, an American pilot engaged a North Korean pilot in a dogfight. They eventually literally flew threw a canyon Trench Run/Pod-racing style, and even at one point ended up right next to each other, and flipped each other off. Eventually, they actually (to the American pilots initial dismay) ended up flying over the North Korean airbase, but he pulled back and got the drop on the North Korean pilot just as it happened. He shot down the North Korean pilot, whose plane proceeded to not only crash, but cartwheel in a fiery blaze of glory through a dozen or so parked and grounded North Korean fighter planes. True, verified story. Talk about "Danger Zone" needing to play IRL if there ever was a moment 😄

The encounter at the beginning and also the battle depicted at the end of Top Gun are loosely based on the 1981 two day plus encounters in the Gulf of Sidra between US F-14s and Libyan Sukhoy Fitters (also Russian origin). Both Fitters were downed in the ocean by Tomcats when they attempted to approach two US Carrier Battle Groups conducting training exercises across Khadfi's self-declared "Line of Death" (which encroached far into widely recognized international waters). Libyan aircraft had previously fired on US aircraft which had crossed the line. Before the downing, US pilots gave the finger to and photographed Libyan crews (which is obviously identical to the humorous encounter in Top Gun.) The next day, things escalated when a Libyan jet fired a missile. It was the first test of F-14s in battle. Ten minute summary of the incident is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6HOiqmGrZ6ce6s

It's basically Top Gun on wheels. It also kinds sucks as it lacks the fun cheese and cool atmosphere of Top Gun, & doesn't do a good job of leaning into itself in a fun way the way Top Gun does, but it's worth watching just to see how this team tried to replicate this same style of film and fail so hard, lol.

the term bogey is a real term its used for an unidentified aircraft presumed to have hostile intent. In that opening scene as soon as that "MIG 28" (In reality the aircraft is an F-5) locked on to "Couger" with missile lock that plane went from bogey to hostile and at that point risked being shot right out of the sky really quick. I've intercepted actual Russian as well as Chinese aircraft that luckily played smart and did not do something stupid because at that moment, I had a lock on and had they decided not to play nice I would have fired in a heartbeat if it was required.
@SeanTanktop2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the info dude!!
@CDRhammond2 жыл бұрын
@@SeanTanktop Can also tell you for the opening is what you would go through the set up for a successful launch though some of the hand signals shown are not what are used. Those guys that did the somewhat of a football kick when the F-14 touched down they are "shooters" and give the final signal to launch an aircraft what they were doing in the opening I never once saw, that was in the area where aircraft come into land but if one was on approach at the time those yellow shirts would be absolutely nowhere near that area unless they wanted to get turned into road kill. the signal to stop was correct with the two hands held up over the head held into fists had that footage continued one of the arms would have dropped signaling the pilot to drop the front catapult hook located on the front wheel to be set into the catapult itself. The Guy in the movie that gave that signal that looked like a salute he is a plane captain that signal is giving control over to a shooter and not to launch off the catapult. The guy holding that device in his hand over his head is known as "paddles" or officially as an LSO (Landing Signal Officer) they are the ones that both direct in and grade a landing aircraft they are also shown on the far side of the runway as an aircraft touches down. The Tomcat that hit the one wire on landing he's getting a bad grade he came in low which is why that wire was hit. Goal is always to try and hit the 2 or 3 wire, hit the 4 your approach was too high and like with the 1 wire you just got lucky (1 is the worst of the 4 to hit). When "Mavrick" took off to save Couger that footage was either of an F-14 missing the wires and going around for another attempt or going through the nightmare known as Carrier quals. which can be almost as stressful as a bad weather trap (fighter jargon for landing) especially if it's your first time qualifying.

The bar scene, where they're singing, is at the base's Officer's Club, not an off-base bar. The flying scenes in this movie are all real-life flying, not CGI. I'm guessing that in the new movie, Top Gun 2, about 90% of the flying scenes are CGI.
