How about cold showers after training? Some people swear by it but I've seen studies that shows a decrease in protein synthesis after cold bathes (arguably not the same). I'd like to hear your take on it.

@@Herrgolani hmm that's an intresting topix indeed. I've seen some, but definitely not all the studies on this topic. Maybe I should put this one on the list too

Thank you very much for this informative video! I like that you keep thinking critical and include more studies which may not be directly related to the topic at first sight.

im going to be honest, regardless of the results of the studies you mentioned, a sample size of 8 is WAY too small to be anywhere near scientifically rigorous. at least 20 people would be fine... but im tired of these training-related studies only having a handful of subjects and drawing real conclusions from such a small amount of data

Yeah most feasibility studies have low numbers of participants. It’s really really hard to find more people to participate in protocols like this. In my masters thesis’ experiment I managed to find 18 participants and with the things they had to go through (breath hold in cold water, blood testing, VO2max testing etc) it was a miracle that I found so many. For this reason these studies are well accepted by the scientific community. The study design however, is a different concept and I agree that it could be a lot better

Some of these academic studies are laughable. I recently saw a study by PhD’s boasting about their study that showed higher reps per set are equivalent to progressive resistance by adding weight. No kidding? I do not increase my weight until I can do more than 12 reps for 2 or more consecutive sets. Therefore, for me to be able to do more than 12 reps for 2 or more sets I must have gotten stronger by Reps alone without adding weight. I didn’t need a PhD research study to tell me that.

It’s true that many times studies make no sense but only add a small part to the literature. Some time they don’t even do that. The only thing we can do is keep an open mind and a critical thinking.

Sounds like the researchers were more interested in the beer mile than real life exercise and drinking.

Recovery crew… who else is cackling at the descriptions of unrealistic amounts of alcohol after training? (And even the idea of “after” training??) 🥲
