Technically, if there are more performers than audience, you don't have to perform a show. That's how it is in the actor's guild, I believe, but I don't know if it extended to musicians. The best reason to have so many people in your band would be that if you showed up to this you could leave without penalty. This band showed up with more than 10x the number of people in the audience and decided, screw it, we're doing this. 100 child chore and all.
