The Marineford War happened all because Blackbeard captured Ace but just remember Blackbeard originally wanted to capture Luffy. And as well Blackbeard only got to Whitebeard because Whitebeard declared the war to take back Ace. So all in all, Blackbeard was smart and dumb in this whole thing. Smart: because he took advantage of the mess to accomplish most what we seen accomplished in the episode. Dumb: because for example he told Ace about his plan not aware that Ace was Luffy's brother and even though Blackbeard betrayed Whitebeard, the man Ace calls his father, he asks Ace to join his crew. And he also just charged into a battle with Magellan knowing that his DF was poisonous.
