Kind of a sad note to end on, honestly. We took this living thing and changed it over generations to better suit what *we* wanted it to be, for our own amusement, instead of just appreciating what it was. And now some people keep dogs as almost literal toys, dolling them up in whatever outfits we find enjoyable, and there's a bunch of breeds that have awful health problems because we made them this way, unnaturally. I love pugs (and dogs in general), and want to keep them safe, but the poor things struggle to _breathe_ because we thought they'd look _cuter_ that way. And that fucking sucks.

I think cuteness is unique to humans . Most mammals have evolved to have babies we all consider cute. Including other species too. They only ever spare babies of prey, even then rarely but they don't do that with adult prey. Recognizing cuteness is how we know something is a baby
