Been playing over a decade, but after a couple year hiatus, when I came back, I was struggling getting the same distance/speed as I used to have. I found out Innova made something called BLIZZARD plastic, so I tried it out, and it allowed me to start throwing Destroyers and Katana’s again, where at “regular” weight (170+’ish) I could not. One tip, don’t go TOO light, I tried a 139g destroyer, and it flies more under stable than a Roadrunner! Lol. I found the 150-160 range is my sweet spot to hit those 12 (sometimes even 13) speed numbers. P.S. I don’t remember if he mentioned this exactly, but lighter discs do NOT respond well in higher wind conditions! So be very mindful of that! Good Luck!

Gstar has been my go to. It retains the durability of premium plastic but flies slightly understable vs same mold in star or champion. The other characteristics I love about gstar is incredible grip hot or cold. if it nails a tree it just drops as the plastic absorbs the impact. I dont see those 75ft tree kicks with gstar that you have with champion.

On a give hole, in a given round, trying to throw “far” doesn’t particularly lead to better scores. But, IMO, distance is THE number one factor in scoring. If you can’t reach the basket, your odds of birdieing the hole go down dramatically. The closer to your max distance you have to throw to reach a hole, the less likely you are to hit your line. The faster the disc that you have to throw, the more variable your shots are. If your buddy regularly puts it 20 feet on a hole, and you can get to 45 only on your very farthest throw, he can dramatically improve his average score by doing a little work on putting. You can do all the work you want on putting, but you’d need to reach pro level to birdie the hole more than once in a blue moon. But we get these tips about not trying to throw far, because, when a beginner is trying to throw far, that is likely the biggest factor in holding them back from achieving good distance.
@Beaglefaust2 жыл бұрын
Those are great points. Most pros obviously gear up for big drives with a long run-up. But for me, it's far more important to get the fundamentals right for distance. And trying to throw far almost always makes it worse.
@bernan12 жыл бұрын
spot on. In DG, distance is king. Look no further than the stats for C2 in Reg as a predictor for high finishes...(or strokes gained tee to green compared to putting). I say this as someone who's 80+% in C1x putting....
@cglasford12 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with this but I still strongly believe that new players need to work on their skills in this order, Putting because the better putter you are the less important your drive is, 2 your up shots those 150-200ft shots because the more accurate you are the close you can get to the pin and the less putting you have to do, I know kind of counter intuitive and then back hand driving, then forehand driving. I put the driving last because unless you are playing a course that is somewhat short 350 or less to the pin on average it will require most am players especially in MA4-MA2 to throw an up shot and then putt. MA1 that number probably goes out to 400-450. That said if you can get your accurate drives to that 380-420 range you will be a better player. Caveat to that you still have to be able to put because my C2 in regulation stat from the last tournament was approximately 85% on par 3s but my C2 putting was only 10% and C1x was 55%.... and I got 14th in MA2. I can consistently throw in that 400-425 range off the tee but I'm not great at putting, yet.
@bensalemi77832 жыл бұрын
@@cglasford1 To a certain extent, it very much depends on where you start out and what goals you have. That said, I'm going to disagree for the simple fact that hitting first available off the tee, or throwing it on a noob hyzer to nowhere on an open hole, these hurt you the most as a rank beginner. Work on throwing putters first and play very short,
@cglasford12 жыл бұрын
@@bensalemi7783 Those are all fair and great points. And I guess I would never instruct anyone who’s just starting out to simply focus on one aspect of the game all by itself but I would still probably prioritize it in the way that I have listed it. Standstill shots aka approach shots over drives. But you’re 100% correct everyone is so different. If the person has any athletic experience typically they pick up driving very quickly from my experience. That’s why I typically recommend working on putting as a primary focus

I love and have no shame in throwing light weight discs. I bag 3 different weights of mvp waves. 154g fission for easy hyzer flips/tailwind bomber. 164g fission for distance that needs to come back at the end/ if there is a bit of wind. 175g glow that goes straight for a good while while having a dependable strong fade at the end. It also helps with mold minimalization so that instead of 3 different molds, I just have 3 slightly different waves. I also throw a 149g relay that I know will flip up and turn no matter what I do, which is very helpful since I do not have a forehand that I can trust off the tee. Great video Robbie, excited to see the future installments of this series.

I started playing last August and my friend who got me into dg gifted me three discs, one of which was a Halo Destroyer. I understood that it was way out of my throw ability, but I kept it in my bag to motivate me to continue to pursue reaching the ability to throw it. I do a lot of max distance fieldwork and I always included throwing that destroyer, even when it wouldn't reach the same distance as my mids. Thankfully, now I am able to get my destroyer to actually fly flat and fade at the end, but I know there's still a long way to go. For max distance, I currently bank on my Undertaker, but I've gotten some lucky throws in fieldwork with the new Halo Wraith that even put some of my Undertaker throws to shame. I think having a discs that's "out of your league" is great to maintain motivation in improving technique and constantly seeing progress with its flight.

The thing that helped me is loosening my arm. I was having trouble with rounding. My max distance throw was about 330 and my accuracy on long shots was terrible. I started throwing with a loose arm and snapping the disc. Now I can throw 400 pretty easily. And on a slight downhill I can almost hit 500.
@Iliyena872 жыл бұрын
Great that you've achieved all that timing and snap! I have yet to reach 400 ft but recently unlocked the same thing you are talking about. The tip to "Slam my elbow as if to hit a wall" made me use my torso and sling my arm over my chest finding the power pocket instead of rounding using the arm muscles. Unlocking this also made my forehand make more sense, as if a load on my brain of not getting either of them to work took from the other.
@jeffheyer77832 жыл бұрын
Yep letting your wrist go limp and snapping the disc not only gets you more distance, but allows you to throw easy distance. Hitting the power pocket and focusing the power through your hips. The key really is to slow everything down. The longer your “reach back” and the longer you wait to pull through, the faster the disc snaps.

Heard someone say recently on a past about "what are some great tips for beginners" (i've been playing nearly 3 years). "The speed disc you should throw should be your maximum distance / 35". All i can say, is your form is your own and it is unique and if you're trying to improve, it's always evolving. What the pros use doesn't mean you have to use that. For most people building up to max distance (and I'm doing this myself as well) is go as understable as possible. The scale goes from -5 to +1, so you're looking at Mambas (-5), and Roadrunners (-4) and things like that. Build into those discs, and when those beat in and your form has improved enough to be able to reliably turn those because they will still act stable for lower arm speeds and if you're not getting them nose down, step down to less understable discs, and then to stable discs, then over stable discs. That turn number is probably the most important thing to focus on, not the name of the disc and how other people view that disc ("Oh I can't use those it's too flippy," "it's just a roller / utility disc for me," etc)

For more under stability stay away from champion, blizzard and metal flake plastics. 150 G Star Mamba is my max distance disc with accuracy when not in a head wind. In headwind I go with the Star Sidewinder. For drivers Star plastic is my choice! I don’t play in a lot of rain. If you do try and find G-star.

My game weakness has mainly been consistency in throwing. It's something I have to consciously work on instead of distance. I have high strength so i can easily turn over destroyers (and not just release badly, i've had others check as well as seen the disc turn over mid flight, not just off the rip) but my foot placement and speed is inconsistent. So once I can get that down, I will be able to actually place my shots better instead of worrying if I will release early, late or near the perfect zone. Good distance, placement all over the place lol. I will be looking over your other videos to see what you have made to help me. Good work on this, I look forward to seeing you more. I use 3 destroyers right now (stable, over and under) as well as a Warship, mako3 and buzz for midranges, and my aviar or guard for putting, depending on if i need a spin putt or push putt.

Take any driver that you like the feel of in your hand, and throw it. If it finishes left (for correct handed people 😜) earlier than you want, grind it in a figure 8 pattern on a side walk, repeat that until you get the flight pattern you want. I buy 3 at a time, same color and weight, keep one overstable, grind one till I can flip it a bit, and make the third one into a roller. This way every shot shape for distance that I need is with the exact same feeling disc, and it’s helped my game quite a bit.

I throw normal Star destroyers for 400+ accurate shots but I have a G-star plastic one that does fly the same distance with alot less effort but accuracy is effected because of the weight and also it's ability to sometimes turnover and sometimes not. But 2 of the best distance drivers I have had success with are the Discraft Hades and Dynamic disc Captain. I rarely bag them unless I know the course is long and OB isn't a huge factor on shot placement.

In my experience plastic type effects the disc flight quite a bit. I have some discs that are light weight and understable that still fly over-stable for me. (My Max flat distance is between 200-250) So if the premium (stiffer) plastic is too overstable go to the softer basic plastic.

I don't crack 400 ft all that often but I've gone from being a 250 ft max distance to consistently getting out to 350 ft. But... my consistency isn't great, and accuracy is way more important that simply throwing a long ways. So I have plenty more work to do.

The only change is I can throw the premium plastic a lot more reliable now than when I started

People often forget that the Valkyrie was the world distance record disc for quite a while. I made the beginner mistake of going from dx plastic starter kit, everything in the 150 gram range, to buying a max weight champion destroyer. I eventually found pro plastic Valkyrie which I could throw decently and get decent distance with. And then I started losing them after turning them over on a 430' hole into a sea of bushes and lost like 3 of them that way, which is when I learned about disc weight, disc speed, and plastic type. I didn't know you could over throw a disc. I was using destroyers as forehand only discs that would always end right for me, and wraith for my distance driver. Eventually got to the point where I was turning my star wraith over... and started throwing my destroyers a bit more. I recently got a star destroyer instead of champion plastic and found that it's more manageable for my backhand, though it's a full send for sure and I don't always get any turn out of it. Anyway, it's been a journey and I've learned a lot and I have a lot yet to learn. Appreciate the content!

I just started watching your channel, and this is the first video I watched of yours, subscribed right away BTW. Anyways I've been playing for right around 20 years and sadly my skill level hasnt really evolved very much over the last 2 decades. That's 100 percent on me, I haven't done much to step up my game as far as talking to higher skilled players, haven't really studied up by watching videos, I've never had anyone record me throwing, etc. And thanks to your video I now know I've been using the wrong mindset when choosing discs. My main discs I throw are the Destroyer, Daedalus, and Mamba. All 3 are higher speed discs, and like you alluded to in this video, I thought higher speed rating =more speed from my throws, not higher speed discs = the more arm speed you need to throw these discs. I decided to purchase a Leopard3 and a Valkyrie after watching this. Next step is trying to figure out everything I'm doing wrong before I can realistically expect to see any improvements in my game. I'm embarrassed to say, but my average drive is probably 250' or less, and always seems like the harder I try to throw it harder and faster, the less distance I seem to get. I really need a disc golf coach.....if you know of any in the West TN area, please point me in their direction. I love disc golf, even if I never improve past my current level, but it's so demoralizing to watch these other guys go up there and throw these beautiful, flat throws that seem to glide for eternity, and I try to replicate their throws and I throw one way up in the air that banks hard left, barely clearing 200 feet.

Yup I got 3 DX Beasts, 145, 150 and 158 grams, they are my farthest flying discs. Sidewinder in DX is a good one too

getting back in to DG with some more effort this time around. It's awkward throwing from a wheelchair. Dig the videos and tips.

*Starlord voice* FINALLY. Excited for this one. I think distance is overrated in terms of beginner skills (been playing for a year now and I like throwing mids and fairways more than anything distance driver), but there's a point when you want to practice and see just how far you can throw.

It is funny that your example of heavy vs lightweight discs was a captain. I actually have both a lucid and lucid air captain and the lucid air is WAY easier to throw. In my mind, I might outgrow the air one day and move up to the heavier one.

Love the tern. Max distance for me comes from a pro wraith which is actually less stable than the tern. Pro plastic is awesome, i wish it was easier to source.

Innova PRO plastic changed my game. Pro Beast, Pro Wraith, Pro Destroyer especially when they get beat in.

I don't think they make them anymore, but I used to really like StarLite from Innova. All understable drivers for me. Mamba, Valkyrie, Bolt. I think I need to try a Sidewinder or Roadrunner again.

Love G-Star…. I have a Gazelle and it’s 175 grams and a monster that eats headwinds and actually seems to fly further into one versus no wind. Just wish it was 5 grams lighter.

I still have trouble with getting onto my right side throwing BH thanks to subconsciously favoring my right knee after surgery many years ago. But when I manage to push hard off my left foot on the X-step and really hit (crush the can, causes "snap" per Stokely, whatever) the front plant foot, boom, the disc suddenly goes pretty far (for me). And yeah, my super glidey 7-speed River is basically as long (or longer when my form sucks) as my 13-speed Mayhem 90% of the time. But it is interesting that even a 13-speed, which I really have no business throwing, works pretty well when I get the form right.

I feel great about getting my 4 and 5 speed Rocs out to 300 - 320ft with some consistency. When I need to go farther, I pull out something in the 7 - 9 speed range, but then I throw them 250ft and I feel bad and I swear I'm going to quit playing disc golf and donate my bag to charity. Unrelated, my 9-year-old's vocabulary is about 60% 'Yeet', so I definitely know what I'm getting him for his birthday.

I'll bet you have throwing nose up issues. Releasing nose up absolutely kills driver distance. The two main causes (out of many, including several throwing motion issues) are not getting on your front plant foot before pulling and not having your wrist in the "pouring coffee" position to keep the nose down. Good luck. I work on it every time I go out.

Met you on Monday at the store, thank you for the help finding that blue Kona Panis escape. Looking forward to this series as I have just started introducing some distance drivers back into my bag after a year of throwing exclusively fairways.

Another great video Robbie. I have really broken down my distance game to 3 molds. DDx - Scorpius - Wraiths. All in Star or S-line plastic. And all in various weights from 169 to 175. Based off of wind read and what I need the disc to do, where I need it to finish or how I'm feeling that round will determine my disc selection for that max drive to an ideal landing zone.

159g handeye lucid sapphire. Prefers a tailwind 168g I dye tern will take on any wind 168g gstar leopard3 for shorter drives Prefer my discmania slightly heavier low 170's

I see those Kristin Tattar Graces in the background. Grace is the disc I found that matches my arm speed and flight for max distance currently. Well, between that and the Finish Line Era from Drew Gibson. Still figuring out which I actually want in the bag.

That's crazy! I bag both and they are my two favorite discs to throw.
@KingKerrmitt2 жыл бұрын
@@mindlander what differences do you see in them? They overlap so much for me that if I bag both I'll always have indecision on which to throw in situations.

I find if I buy new disks and leave them in my trunk a few years that they throw much better when I pull them out. This is why I have no problem buying used disc's.

I always recommend going to the used bin at shops and look for slightly beat in distance drivers. I’ve found some perfectly beat in wraiths that I can hyzer flip. Also you’re not breaking the bank by trying out discs..

O I remember the day I had to give up the Destroyer for the Wrath a few years ago being in my late 40's now. But still getting 350 feet fairly consistently, which I'm totally fine with at this point.
@wisherb12 жыл бұрын
I think that the inconsistencies of the plastics has a lot to do with it. This is why you can have large variations in a single mold type, like a destroyer. This affect the speed threshold greatly.
