It is a very simplistic approach. Intermittent fasting is NOT simply calories restriction. You need to understand what happens to your body when you fast. It is not just an energy balance of cal in and cal out.

You’ve never been obese, so your body has always had to have food as fuel to support and nourish your body. Being obese, or morbidly obese, the person has so much fat on their body, that they have a bunch of stored up energy in their body. Once your body becomes fat adapted, which takes around a month, your hunger/appetite drops an incredible amount. I’ve been obese for most of my life, and intermittent fasting and becoming fat adapted, where my body is utilizing the fat on my body as my main fuel source, has been a godsend. And like I said, you’ve been fit or malnourished, it seems, your entire life. Being 15 pounds over weight I wish I could say was my biggest mountain to climb, but I had to multiply that by 10. I’m assuming most of your clients are obese. You have always relied on food for energy and nourishing your body, I’m assuming the majority of people trying to lose weight have so much fat on their body they need to cut that food addiction. For me, intermittent fasting was the key. I have so much excess fat that my body had to learn to use the stored fat on my body as my fuel source. It took about a month of intense cravings, headaches, and sickness to do so, but, I no longer feel hungry until the evening. I’m an electrician and working 50 hours a week and don’t feel the need to eat breakfast or lunch. Back when I wasn’t intermittent fasting I was hungry from the time I woke up and had to eat and eat until I went to bed. It’s difficult to see people giving advice when they’ve been the exact opposite their entire lives, either malnourished or an athlete, and equate gaining 15 pounds in a year, to being the same as what other people have struggled with; like being 100+ pounds overweight. It’s on the exact opposite ends of the spectrum. If you’re fit, or hardly have any fat on your body, you absolutely need to make sure you’re eating the correct and right amount of foods, because your body needs food to survive. If your obese, or morbidly obese, you could literally go months and months without eating (just make sure you’re supplementing the correct vitamins and minerals that your body needs) because of all the stored up energy in your body. The key when you’re morbidly obese is to stop the food addiction and cravings; and for me, intermittent fasting was the answer. When I get to a fit level like Lilly, I will make sure that I’m getting the correct amount of calories and nutrients my body needs, and will probably stop intermittent fasting as long as my food addiction/cravings don’t come back (food for some people are as addictive as hardcore drugs). If my food addiction does come back, maybe intermittent fasting is the way to go for me. But, like Lilly says, you need to make sure you’re getting the needed calories and nutrients in that time restricted window, especially if you’re fit and have little body fat, otherwise your body will become malnourished.

I appreciate your post, @doinkclown. I found carnivore in February or March and started tiptoeing in. Although I ate a lot of veg and some occasional Ezekiel bread, I have never eaten the SAD diet (I’m from So Cal and my mom was a hippie). I thought I had long-COVID (thus the foray into research on anti-inflammatory diets) but eventually got to a rheumatologist and was diagnosed with PMR. Between being insulin-resistant (my symptoms tell me I have been all of my life, although I was not heavy until having my 1st child at 24 yo), thyroid issues (lost it to cancer in 2004 but I suspect I had issues for at least 20 years), and now that I am on prednisone … my blood sugar is elevated whether or not I eat, never mind if there are carbs. I will continue eating carnivore despite the fact I am gaining weight b/c I do believe it is healthier. But I also believe that once I am weaned off prednisone, IMF w/carnivore or possibly ketovore are the only things that will save me.

Lillie, it's so important to make the distinction between what works for someone with a lean body versus someone who's carrying a lot of excess fat. When Dr. Jason Fung first started to popularize intermittent fasting, it was for people with insulin resistance and obesity, which he found so common in his kidney patients. The purpose of the fasting periods each day is to reduce insulin by limiting the times you are eating and triggering it. And one of the reasons to reduce insulin is that you cannot burn body fat when insulin is present. So by limiting the period when it is present, you give your body not only the need for but also the opportunity to burn it's body fat. And because an overweight person's body is making up for the lack of calories in their diet with their own body fat, intermittent fasting does NOT lead to calorie restriction! Once fat adapted, the body will actually burn whatever additional calories it needs from it's stored fat - which is, in fact, what that stored fat is for! With a lean person, however, there is no body fat to burn when dietary calories are restricted due to a limited eating window, and especially one as short as what you described. In an 8-hr window, it's still possible to eat what you need, and especially because the body will increase it's ability to digest greater and greater amounts of protein as needed. But no, absolutely, an OMAD or even 2MAD diet with a small eating window would only result in calorie restriction, as you said,leading to slowed metabolism. So really, the problem isn't that intermittent fasting - or rather, time-restricted eating - is unhealthy in the long run in general but just that it isn't designed for EVERY body; it's designed specifically for those with excess fat that need to burn it off. (As well as to heal insulin resistance, which is another issue as well, lol.)
@ScienceAppliedForGood
@ScienceAppliedForGood 6 ай бұрын
What you've described is correct. Intermittent fasting is not the same as Calorie Restriction exactly due to the fact that during Calorie Restriction Insulin can be still high if you ate frequently, and especially if it was ultra-processed food. During Intermittent Fasting or as it's scientifically called Time Restricted Feeding (TRF) the Insulin hormone level after about 14 - 16 hours of fast becomes low enough for the body to switch to using fat as an energy source. With one caveat, that it also depends on the amount of glycogen stored in muscles and the liver. Prof. Mark Mattson who is an expert on studying the effects of TRF on animals wrote an interesting book on the subject called Intermittent Fasting Revolution where he descried the physiology of fasting in humans. Also, I suggest to check this scientific peer reviewed paper where the mechanism of TRF aka Intermittent Fasting explained very well: Mark P. Mattson at el., Flipping the Metabolic Switch: Understanding and Applying Health Benefits of Fasting., Obesity (Silver Spring). 2018 Feb; 26(2): 254-268. Calorie restriction isn't the same as intermittent fasting. There is a new study that compare people doing calorie restrictions vs intermittent fasting and the intermittent fasting group lost more weight. Also autophagy happens with intermittent fasting. Of course calories matter, but intermittent fasting has more benefits for the body.

Calorie restriction is only a small part of why intermittent fasting works for weight loss. And yes timing does make an impact. If you go without food for 20 hours, your body will begin feasting on stored fat. It worked for me. I was obese and am now at a normal weight. I used to be a compulsive eater around the clock and finally feel like I’m freed from that prison! I think if you can make sure you’re not under-eating, you’re golden.

At the END of the day it's CALORIES IN, CALORIES OUT. To lose weight, you need to create a CALORIE DEFICIT, which means you need to burn more calories than you consume. Eating one meal a day with a CALORIE SURPLUS will NOT help you achieve this goal. In fact, it may lead to weight gain instead of weight loss.
@lrw0
@lrw0 6 ай бұрын
That is provably false. There have been numerous controlled studies at the same calorie level where the group with dramatically reduced carbs lost more weight. This is for reasons that we all intuitively understand for mechanical engines, but some of us have a mental block where we think biological engines are magic. Think about the mechanical engine in a car. We know intuitively that a well tuned car gets better gas mileage than an untuned one, and we can prove it with real life examples. That means 2 engines that started the same can receive the same number of calories, while producing different levels of work. A calorie is a measure of usable energy. The calories in gasoline are what allows the engine to perform work. There is nothing magical about biological engines that changes this fact we understand about mechanical ones. Thinking it can't be true for magical biological engines is theology, not science. Of course, calories matter. More gas will make both engines go further. Calories aren't the only things that matter. The body actually has 2 engines. They have different levels of efficiency and different levels of fat burning BY DESIGN. Glucosis is naturally more efficient than ketosis, meaning fewer calories provide the same level of work, so there are more extra calories to convert into fat. Ketosis is less efficient and directly burns fat. This design makes sense in a world of feast or famine. @@to-tx2sz

I think the biggest benefit to IF in the beginning is the one of teaching control over your food. Especially for those who have been binge eating unhealthy foods. It allows you to practice NOT eating for limited periods of time and then eating healthier food choices for nutrition when we do eat as we adapt to burning fat. Great sensible video - Thanks!

I never jumped on the IF bandwagon, always thought it was baloney, yes our ancestors didn't always eat every day, but it wasn't because they didn't want to eat, it's because food wasn't always available the way it is today. If they could have eaten regular meals throughout the day they would have, it's a survival mechanism not the fountain of youth.

Of course the advice is to eat carbs/sugar every few hours to keep the blood sugar elevated. I switcj between keto/carnivore and don't eat after 6pm. I usually go 14-20 hours without eating and feel fine and my eating window is 10 hours so I get my 2-3 meals in. It feels great not having any symptoms.

I think there's more to it than just calorie restriction. I saw some more indepth discussions of this recently but don't entirely understand it; it has more to do with improving the insulin sensitivity which you mention. I try to fast for a day every week or two, usually after I have been eating too much and feeling like a glutton, I need a reset. I don't hold back on food when I'm eating, which is all day most days. Now I have cut out processed foods (except yesterday at work when they ordered free pizza LOL), but still eat natural sugars in fruits honey etc.; and eat lots more animal fat / meat / eggs. I have seen a lot of improvements with this strategy. Plus I do lots of exercise and HIIT every few days.

The problem with the current generation of fasting is that people don't know how to fast. Religions fast sparingly and for short periods. For example Ramadan is 30 days of one meal a day fasting. It's not 30 days of fasting, but at the end of every night apparently, the fast is broken. In Jewish holidays they will dry fast for a single day. Sometimes the Sabbath is a day of fasting in some sects of Judaism. Today, we have people going on 30 day fasts who have crap health, and then coming out and refeeding on McDonalds, wondering why they are in the hospital. People take supplements like nutritonal yeast which has carbs, electrolyte powders, will stil drink highly addictive and highly caffeinated coffee... Its' insanity. Plus, you have to refeed and eat properly.

Respectfully girlie, we may never know if it's the IF that caused that for sure and it's highly likely that it wasn't. We are designed to be able to go without food. Eating constantly throughout the day does not insure healthy hair. It's all about hormones and optimal hormone health is achieved through many things such as diet, sleep, exercise and stress management. Fasting in and of itself, especially just IF won't cause stress but is healthy. Extended fasting could be an issue for someone without extra fat on their body. IF is actually optimal for most people, 16/8, which was typical as early as the 1950s. Breakfast at 8, lunch at 12, dinner at 5:30 and no snacking.

You absolutely correct and I highly recommend people go watch some of Dr. Mindy’s incredibly informative videos. If people choose not do IF for whatever reason that’s a their own person decision if they do not like eating in that way. It’s definitely not for everyone. Having said that, IF has been proven from many studies that it’s a very healthy way to eat for not only weight loss but healing the body on a cellular level. It has also been proven that eating all day is not healthy because you are raising blood sugar all day long which is not recommended for anyone.

As an Orthodox Christian, we have fasting periods throughout the year. Typically this means abstaining from animal products for that period, but it can also mean what it means in the health sphere of just not eating anything. These fasting periods are balanced with feasting periods. I think the feasting periods are just as important. Feasting doesn't mean overdoing, it, that's not good either. But I do think the balance between the two, fasting and feasting, are important.

Love that you are so flexible with your lifestyle. I eat 2 meals a day and I do fast one to two days a week. Because I have a more healing to do. I also change my food up ketovore to carnivore to lion. Summer I like a bit of vegetables and berries that are grown locally. Hollidays a little keto recipes for the bad stuff I refuse to eat lol. But we all have to do what is right for us individually. And for some its changing up or down. Blessings sweet lady.

@olwill1

I'm sorry you believe that. Simple calorie restriction has been shown time and time again not to work in the long run. For me, the"long run" is about three days. Hunger, and the gluttony that follows, will eventually conquer all. Carb restriction, and especially keto, is the only weight loss strategy I know that faithfully removes poundage without hunger. You may take in fewer calories, but that happens automatically, without invoking the monumental battle between hunger and willpower.

I love you & your content so much Lillie and I agree you made the best decision for yourself! Children, pregnant or nursing women, and lean fit people shouldn't fast, however I believe everyone else should! Fasting (intermittent & extended) + eating whole nutrient dense foods + strength training. I believe that is the best ways for someone who is overweight to lose their excess fat as fast as possible and correct metabolic issues. And once you are at a weight you're satisfied with, then drop the fasting and continue to eat whole nutrient dense foods + strength training for life. Just my 2 cents! ✌️

Lillie, I love your channel! My philosophy on eating, food choices, weight loss, etc. closely mirror yours. I've tried just about every diet out there and they all worked...at first. They worked because I was motivated and intentional in my eating and it usually involved eliminating junk food. But mostly they all involved cutting calories, even with IF. When I first started IF I thought I'd found the Holy Grail of weight loss. I initially lost about 40 pounds, but then I gradually started gaining weight. I couldn't figure out what went wrong. Then I saw another KZbin channel video about my specific dilemma and it suggested weighing my food and counting calories. When I did that I realized that I was overeating on my non-fasting days. I was doing the Eat Stop Eat method of two 24 hour fasts per week and I rationalized that I could overeat on my non- fasting days, but on a weekly basis I had crept into a calorie surplus. I started weighing my food and tracking my calories with cronometer and now I've maintained an over 60 lb weight loss for almost 6 years. I mostly eat an animal based diet because I can't tolerate high FODMAP foods due to IBS and I usually avoid high oxalate foods due to joint pain, but I'm not obsessive about it and I enjoy treats on special occasions like birthdays, holidays, vacation, etc. I rarely fast anymore, just an occasional 16-18 hour fast if I'm busy or traveling.

Personally I’ll do intermittent fasting kind of naturally. If I’m not thinking about it I average around 14 hours. If I am thinking about it I push it to 16-18. Crank out a 24 here and there. I’d like to try a 48 and 72. But I just never do it. I do IF hoping it will help with healing some of my chronic health issues. Even if it’s a very small chance. Plus I actually feel pretty damn good later in the fast.

Several years ago when I was big on autophagy, I would do the 60 hours weekend fast (Fri dinner and break on Mon breakfast). I did 153 weekends for a cumulative of 153 x 60 = 9180 hours divided by 24 = 382 days. I ended the series in Aug 2021. Right now I'm neutral on fasting but I wouldn't fast past 48 hours (Fri dinner and break on Sun dinner for example). I see that Mike Mitzel (High Intensity Health) is throttling back on fasting for fear of losing muscle. The world record for continuous fasting is 392 days, so my cumulative number is close. Like I said, I'm neutral but keep it under 48 hours is better for anyone who wants to fast, is my opinion.

I disagree. When you are in a fasted state your body accesses your fat stores. If your are eating throughout the day it never gets that chance. So eating 2 steaks in a one hour period vs spreading it throughout the day isn’t going to give you the same results.

I also have Hashimoto’s. So if someone is doing everything right it doesn’t mean it’s their diet. I know you know this but others might not. Until my thyroid is behaving I’ll probably struggle. Is what it is. Thanks Lillie. Another great video.

I have Hashimoto’s and I am actually reversing it with carnivore!! I am eating two meals a day. I pack 1,000 calories into my first meal by eating fatty cuts of meat like ribeye. I eat midmorning because I start my day just drinking water. After eating 1,000 calories, I don’t get hungry until 6pm. I then eat another 600-1000 calories for supper. I drink a gallon of water per day and I do use electrolytes. My thyroid is now FULLY FUNCTIONING with no medications and my TPO antibodies are coming down. My A1C has dropped to normal. Everything seems to be normalizing for me and I have lost 33 pounds. ❤❤❤ Keep it up and you will see results!

@@naomimay82 oh that’s so beautiful to hear! Thank you for sharing. So when I was a kid my thyroid was radiated because I had Graves’ disease. Fast forward 20 years later and I developed Hashimoto’s. Because my thyroid is dead idk how much I can do. My thyroid level are maintain on 200mcg of levothyroxine a day which is a lot but makes sense because my thyroid doesn’t function at all. But I’m hopeful. I’ve been doing mostly carnivore for a long while now. I go between strict carnivore and animal based adding in fruit and honey here and there. I did recently remove dairy and I’m hoping that helps. I was eating about 2300 calories a day but because I’m not super active I’ve dropped it down to 2000.

I did carnivore from an AIP start and I healed a lot of things, but not my thyroid. Next added more fats (ketogenic), then slowly added veggies back. Now I can eat whatever I want, but I stick to a mostly keto diet, absolutely avoid gluten, soy, corn and cow's milk products. I have whole food carbs when I want them (berries, potatoes, rice, dates). This makes me feel my best and it is really obvious when I have something that doesn't agree. My TSH is still up and down, but I had a lot of gut issues as well and those are 95% healed. I'm hoping over time the thyroid will figure things out too. A year ago I couldn't even consider fasting. I was still learning how to nourish my body. A few months ago skipping breakfast started to feel natural, so I do it sometimes. I have now fasted 21-24 hours several times. I am not ready to do more. My goal is to finish eating by 7pm and eat whenever I want during the day. On non-work days I naturally enjoy breakfast around 10am and a lunch between 3 and 5pm. Both eat as much as I want. On work days I eat before and after work, with sometimes a small snack in the middle. I'm guessing I eat 1600-2000 calories per day but I don't count anymore. Weighing food and counting calories got so annoying. I pretty much just eat two meals a day but the week before my period I might eat 3x. Works for me. My clothes are getting looser and my body is changing. I probably have about 20lbs of fat to lose and I'm not in a hurry.

I think it's important to remember that everybody is different. I have auto immune disorders and menstrual problems and ever since I started fasting the way Dr Mindy suggests I've never been better, I like the way she suggests varying fasts according to the cycle. I was always bloated before I started fasting even though I had minimal processed foods and focused on whole foods & I literally could not digest beef. But since I've started fasting I have minimal bloating and can finally eat beef again. But again I don't believe one size fits all. Some people thrive eating all day long or as vegans (both things that made me so uncomfortable and sick) it's just about testing out to see what works for you.

One of the compelling reasons I've heard for IF was the reaction of insulin. What you're saying makes good sense though. I do think WHAT we eat is a bigger deal then WHEN we eat it. Everybody is different. It's good to gain knowledge and try things to see what works for ourselves. We need to be aware of our own medical history as well. There may be underlying conditions that should impact how we individually tackle our dietary problems.

It just didn’t make sense. I probably fasted as long as you (approx. 6 years) and yeah, I should have known the obvious that it is basically calorie restriction that gets the weight off. I also can’t enough calories in one meal. Not even two meals. I do believe, like you said there are other benefits to fasting in terms of cell health which I agree but truth be told, it’s not necessary for weight loss and my gut told me it’s definitely not ideal when your hormones are unbalanced in particular cortisol! I can’t thank you enough for confirming what I suspected. I now know what I need to do. No fasting and continue with my ketovore plan.

But there are so many that believe everyone should do IF/EF, and that’s just not true. But it’s just like you said, people aren’t realizing it’s the calorie restriction at play for what they’re seeking. Then it turned my mild periodic acid reflux into severely painful GERD. I went to a GI doctor and he told me to eat 3-4 meals a day. The smaller meals alleviated my GERD and I was also able to get all the protein I needed. I put on 10 lbs. while losing 2 inches off my waist. Small frequent meals can only be okay if the meals one is eating do not cause a very high insulin spike or if the person is not a diabetic or a prediabetic. With these people, their insulin levels shoot up really high even with small amounts of carbs especially if the carbs are processed carbs and they do not return to normal as quickly as in insulin sensitive people. Hence intermittent fasting may benefit these people. However once metabolic health has been restored and losing weight is no longer a problem, especially when the person already has less than 20 percent fat mass, extended fasting may become problematic when as you say the amount of food eaten during the feeding window cannot supply the right amount of energy and nutrient the body needs.
