I remember 9th grade, I'd had a rough month school-wise, we suffered a loss within the family and a test I was woefully unprepared for was coming up. My mom noticed how stressed I was and allowed me to take a day off, calling me in as sick. I had a day to relax and catch up on several things. It is strange, how something like not going to school, deviating from the daily schedule for a bit, helped me feel better. Now with the pandemic and having school online, I never feel like I can take a day off and have suffered not just one, but two panic attacks in the last two months, my first and second ever. If there's no set routine to take a step back from, things get harder to manage, and I've never wanted to go back to school this desperately, just to get a day away from my head.
@joshlanders4 жыл бұрын
Hey Cooky, hang in there. Online classes can be really intense and stressful. What your campus likely didn't tell you: you have to set your schedule. So much of school is "industrial". 8 to 3, lunch, a days b days, etc. The list goes on, and varies. But in life, you set your schedule. When looking at an online syllabus you have to see how that educational plan fits in with all the others. In an office or job you have a team and manager to help you make those project choices. For now you are on your own to set things up. That is unless you ask for help. Let your professor(s) for challenging coursework know where you struggle to juggle. That way, if you aren't alone, and this is the 40th email, they change the expected delivery of assignments. I had one professor ask us in a poll and another one who set daily quizzes that were times with follow up posts you have to respond to other students. It was nuts. I told the professor my entire other schedule and how much of a time suck his 8 credit hours were. He cut everything down to the online lecture and the forum, no more daily quizzes to prove we were engaged in his course. Also it pays to talk on the phone with professors and not email them, so for professors that give you a phone number, call. Let other school faculty and staff know too. The limit of a professor stops at the Dean, so telling the dean your ads struggling allows room for conversation and improvement of online coursework. Remember that these online classes equate to less work for professors, they feel like they are grading enough and assign more and more, to fill their schedule up. Hang in there, get to graduation and but don't hold your breath - take in a deep breath and try not to stress about grades. You can retake a course, you can retake a test, you can take a break. Grades legitimately to not matter after graduation unless you plan to immediately go into a master's (not recommended).

@@joshlanders I only saw your response right now, but I 1000% appreciate your advice. I tried creating a schedule, but having classes at any point between 8 and 17 o' clock took the agency away from students in many parts, which they have changed over the last couple of months (luckily). In our school they made a survey at the end of the school year and told all teachers to cut back on the work a little. Some teachers still have issues figuring out a good amount, but it's gotten better. We just started back on online school on the 11th of January and it's a bit overwhelming, but they are working on it and are asking students for their thoughts at the end of each week.

@@MrEmanuelThomas No worries, sir. The locution "your truth" has a much, much shorter history than "the truth." The definite article belongs in front of truth; the possessive pronoun not so much. Subjectivity has its place in the world, as in appraising a painting in a museum. You're entitled to your perceptions. Objective truth is knowable, but it takes a lot of work, as any scientist will attest in an inquiry or across a series of them. If you're going to erect a bridge across a river, you've got to be grounded in objective reality. Whether it remains standing is a matter of making correct engineering choices. If it collapses, then the engineers will admit that they made objectively wrong choices. That would be the truth of the matter. To attribute subjective meaning to a term that has been used to highlight objective reality is unhelpful to people who are misled into thinking that they are a source of truth. Only one person can legitimately claim to be the source of Truth, and we surely are not Him. I wish you Godspeed as well.

This video offers a captivating and intimate exploration of the frequently neglected realm of teenage mental health. The speaker’s journey from early experiences with trauma-induced anxiety and depression to becoming an advocate for legislative change is truly inspiring, positively impacting countless students. The recognition that mental health is a universal concern strikes a powerful chord-every individual, irrespective of their diagnosis, possesses mental health that requires care and attention. The development and approval of House Bill 2191 showcase the significant impact of youth-driven efforts in influencing important policies. Permitting students to take mental health days conveys a significant message: the importance of mental and physical health is on par. This legislation not only provides students with the opportunity to recuperate but also fosters transparent dialogue among them, their parents, and educators. This transition is essential for diminishing stigma and facilitating timely intervention. I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that arise when mental health takes a backseat to the demands of school or work. I remember a period in college when I was perpetually exhausted, yet I struggled to find a valid reason to take a break. The implementation of structured mental health days, as illustrated in this video, could have greatly impacted my ability to manage stress and enhance productivity. An essential aspect of this discussion is the necessity for schools to incorporate mental health education into their curriculum. The speaker highlighted an important observation: while many of us receive training in CPR, we seldom learn how to effectively address mental health crises. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) programs offer essential tools for identifying and supporting individuals in the midst of a mental health crisis. Organisations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provide complimentary educational resources and support for students and educators alike. This video emphasises the significance of self-care for individuals of all ages. Even brief moments dedicated to pausing, reflecting, or recharging can be instrumental in preventing burnout. Life can be likened to a long-distance race; it’s essential to pace ourselves and honour our limits to attain lasting well-being. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the speaker and all those who have championed these changes; your courage and determination are truly commendable. Your efforts not only affirm the challenges faced by students but also lay the groundwork for a more compassionate and nurturing community. Let’s keep these discussions going and champion mental health education and resources across the country.

Mental health is an important thing that we must priotise by having regular breaks and reflecting through that, asking ourselves if we really are fine in the situation that we have and face in our everyday scenarios.

I was over-worked and overwhelmed in college during the 90’s. I made a visceral, very real attempt to end it all, too, because... I barely had any friends, and all of my instructors focused on everything I WASN'T doing. I ended up in the hospital, stomach being pumped. So.. yup, they "brought me back". After that, I was treated with a mild apathy and mostly ignored. It's now 25 years later... and... I'm pretty much in the same position. No friends. No partner (she just left me, mostly due to her own mental illnesses)... and I'm treated with a sort of mild neglect and apathy. So little has changed. Interesting.

I think this whole video is brining light to a mental health cause that most people are not paying attention to. The rise of suicide in young children is so prevalent nowadays that it’s astounding more people have not taken it more serious. I think the mental health days are a great idea if the kids take this seriously and don’t abuse this.

really hope and wish that because could understand that it’s hard, especially to those who have other things that at the time are more serious than school work, they just can’t keep up with work and all. Personally as a honor roll student, I told myself I want to quit, I want to stop this hard work after all this studying and days I would work myself for and just quit it all because I just couldn’t hold up much longer. It felt so relieving when we would have short breaks because it gave me enough time to really enjoy my time without any work being assigned for awhile, so I do think at least 3 days off of school anytime should be good for every kid. I understand that back then it wasn’t like that and you had no other choice, but same time, no one really prioritized mental health days. Maybe school does prepare us in the future to not miss a day and so on, but 3 days won’t hurt. We’re doing our best to at least do the most that we can at school for who we want to be as we get older. It’ll help us a lot more in academics as well to just take a break.

i have her diagnosis this kind of support while going through public school would have radically changed my life as a young adult often times i feels like im five years behind everyone my age because i had to take half a decade after high school to get my mental health in check , when things could have been settled easily and cleanly from the beginning with a bit of attention and care

1.What is the attention getter of the speech? Was it effective? Why or why not? A story from when she was a kid in school. I was very effective it helped me picture why mental health was so important to her. 2. What was the full thesis statement of the speech? Did the speaker do a good job making this clear within the first minute of the speech? At the age of six she struggled with mental health problems so her mom gave her 3 days during the school year she could use these days to skip school. 3.What were the main points of the speech in order? Were these easy to pick out? Why or why not? What's going on, how did we get here and what can we do? They were very easy to pick out because she stated them out right during her speech. 4.What kind of transitions did the speaker use? Were they effective? The speaker would use a real life example as a transition. She would also move her body when she was switching topics. This was effective to me because i knew a new point was coming. 5. Describe some information that your speaker introduced from an outside source. Did the speaker provide enough details so you knew you could trust their source materials? she would connect anatomy and basics care of the body inti the speech. Yes i had enough details to tell I could trust the source. 6. How did the speaker provide closure in his/her speech? Was the ending effective? Why or why not? She stated The thing I hope you take away from today is..... 7.What were the most persuasive parts of this speech? Give 2 examples. She formed a bill. She also stressed how important it was by connecting it back to CPR. 8. What, if any, new information did you discover by listening to this speech? List at least three things that were mentioned that you found memorable. She created a whole bill on meatal health in her state. 9.Did the speaker use presentation aids? If so, were they effective? How did they help or hinder their presentation? She used one slide. It was not a distraction at all. 10.Describe your interpretation of the overall delivery of the speech. What were the speaker's strong and weak points and why? (Don't focus on the technical aspects of this video such as video-audio being out of sync.) This presentation seams very professionally. It heald my attention the whole time. I would defiantly watch it again! 11.What do you believe should be the overall grade for that speech (number/letter grade)? Please explain your answer. If you deducted points, explain why you deducted those points. 100- very professional, had great confidence, knew what she was talking baout. post speech URLs of the speeches you found and chose to do this on.

This is actually a great system because you can catch up with how well the students mental health are. In my country, Korea, they only made a classroom called 'we-class' and just put a teacher in there and wait for the students to come. It's passive, and doesn't do much. All it does they put a bunch of toys... and a LITTLE bit of counseling NOT TO DISTURB SCHOOL WORK...And the students think only dumb students go there. The point is that they should take it more seriously and make an active move. Also, in Korea, everyone think resting for mental health sounds stupid, which is discouraging... But we can always change and thank you for giving me insight about how to take care of students mental health.^_^

I got a 3.6 GPA and was in ap/advanced classes and I would skip at least 20 days a year..... Mostly to play videogames, smoke weed, do homework, watch movies, etc.... It's bad because real 9-5 jobs don't give u that much vacation time so I set up bad habits there but at the end of the day it made my life so much better. I would fall asleep in tons of classes too.... My hate for school got so bad that I used to take 3 Oxycodone and smoke weed before school then take 2 more oxys once a few classes passed by because I hated school that much. At the end I was stoned every single day in school.

My parents did something similar and did also call them "mental health days". But yeah, students should be allowed these--how many I'm not sure, but I was very depressed in middle school and these helped. Just an option to opt out of any given day, no questions asked (by the school), no penalty. I think that's a great idea.

As a youth mental health and peer leadership consultant, I agree mental health skills begin with open, honest conversations. It is unrealistic to assume just because we "talk" about mental health and promote help-seeking behaviors that students and adults feel comfortable using the words to ask for help. We must practice mental health conversations with youth with specific words and skills to guide a friend we care about to a trusted adult who can offer mental health support. It takes a village. This will not be accomplished with a worksheet, video, or book - it requires a commitment to normalize conversations about mental health. When we talk about tough topics like mental illness, we strip the stigma that shames children and teens into silence.

I'm 24, just got my first real career job. I struggled with these same issues and still do. When I was a kid, they gave me concerta and then adderall to fix my issues. Told me to go to the bathroom if I feel like I'm going to have an anxiety attack. It didnt work. When I was 22 and in college, I decided to go see a therapist, therapy worked better than any pill ever did.

i wish people were this concerned about mental health in india as well. especially for high school students. people think online classes are much better but trust me they are way stressful. we have to sit in front of the screen for straight 5 hours and can't miss any classes because the matter discussed, won't be repeated. i just get one day off a week and that is on Sunday (yes not even on saturday). and it's not the end here, we have to complete assignments of almost 15 chapters in all 10 subjects. we have to prepare 10 project files and also study for the exams next month but YES ITS ALL AMAZING (':

the worst thing about my mental health is that my parents don't believe me when i try to tell them how burnout and drained i am from school. i wake up every weekday stressing about whether or not I'm going to have enough time to get ready or not. and even if i feel like crap, i still go. school is so draining for teenagers to the point where it's not even funny anymore. i went from "i enjoy school, i want to go" to "i hate school, it's so boring" to now "i hate school, i'm so tired. BUT I HAVE TO GO." i'm starting to put school and education over my own health and i have nobody to help me control it. i remember one morning i woke up and i was so mentally drained. i looked tired, i felt tired and i couldn't stop crying. i obviously wasn't okay. but my parents sent me to school anyways, because it "wouldn't be fair on my younger siblings if they went to school and i stayed home". wow. and it took my little sister to text my dad to come and pick me up because she could tell i wasn't okay. please, please, please look after yourself. school and mental health is so scary when it isn't controlled. i love all of you

I was a worrier, too, and suffered migraines at an early age. My mom and I had a similar understanding and valued our mental health days. She would call in my absences until I was old enough to do so myself. "Are you sick?" she'd say, and we'd both laugh when I replied "Yes, sick! Sick and tired of..."😄

It's a tough area in the subject of mental health, if it's done right it can work, but it can affect students in a negative way if done in a lazy way... it's the tough love versus being gentle argument... not easy to know what's right in each situation...

This is a real issue you know. We definitely should be helping these people with their mental health. But only helping. Not catering to them like PC culture aims to do, because that's going to end up terribly. But helping them is a must if we want to keep moving forward. It's a new age and we're presented with new problems. That requires new solutions. This is apart of that solution. Just learn to adapt.

How about, why society should rethink how it operates, so that people stop losing their minds.
@bakersmileyface4 жыл бұрын
It's not practical. People naturally oppose change. People don't like things they're not comfortable with, and that will apply to the people with mental health issues as well. It's best we just let society learn, adapt and mature at its own pace like it has done and like it is doing now.
