When I suffered a groin injury running, my doctor told me to continue running and to stretch 30 minutes after the run for every hour I ran. It worked like a charm.

Thank you Matt. I was a high school athlete and I have been a professional modern and ballet dancer for 30 years. I feel I can relate very well with your comparisons what we tend to do for short term pain avoidance vs what we need and want to do for long term functional healing. Love how you sum it up: "Pain sucks, life shouldn't". I notice the comments below show that viewers seem to either totally get what you are saying or totally don't. Perhaps you could find a rewording for those who don't understand. I only sincerely encourage you to do so because I believe you are spot on with your understanding, and I want all the viewers to understand you.

You are correct! I got a groin pull from hours of squatting down weeding our garden. It progressed to me having to use my hands to lift my leg in and out of my car. Not only did it get worse, because I was doing nothing, other muscles and joints in the leg started acting out. The pain went to my front thigh....then to the butt like you mentioned...Now I get an occasional muscle spasm in the outer side of my calf, that causes my leg to go out. I really feel it's all caused by my body trying to compensate for the original groin pull. Thanks.
@iamunce
@iamunce Жыл бұрын
How is getting in and out of the car the same as rest? If you're having to lift your leg to avoid pain, isn't that a sign that you should be giving the groin a rest? Get off the leg until you're recovered enough to exercise.

Good explanation how the body if injured will adapt and compensate. This is exactly how the mind use adaptive behaviours following trauma. Unless challenged it will stick with these adaptions limiting potential. Survival comes first.

I can really relate to this! I'm currently getting PT for a groin pull/adductor muscle that I injured SIX MONTHS AGO! When I had the same injury a few decades ago, it healed up in a month. Worse yet, the current injury didn't happen from sports but while I was at home, just stretching! While most injuries heal up by themselves, if they don't physical therapy by a sports specialist is very helpful.

I've had pain SLOWLY setting in at my left groin/adductor and now it even hurts when I'm sitting still. Groin pain can take days to set in? Everything I'm seeing screams groin pull...I had to lift my leg up real fast to avoid a branch on the ground tripping me- it slowly set in over a week. Does that make sense that I pulled it? There's absolutely nothing else that could be the cause.

I understand I have an old groin injury, rest helps but other muscles around the injury can compensate and never allowing the injury to get better so the groin will always strain to compensate for the weak muscles around the injury. I’m taking the approach to strengthening those muscle and massaging the area (groin). Just started doing it hope it works out. Thanks for the video.

Sam R yeah, so really there was a lot that went into my injury. A lot of muscle imbalance, ankle mobility issues, and lack of good stretching. Been overcoming obstacles each at a time. When I hurt myself 6 months ago I focused mostly on stretching but I still had a good bit of pain. I worked on muscle in that area but my right leg is much stronger than my left, so I’ve been working to fix those imbalances. It’s taken me a lot longer to fix due to knee problems, but at my current state I hardly ever feel that same pain unless I lift heavier than usual, and that is generally because of the muscle imbalance. Hope that helps.

Oh, I meant to comment about limping. Some people have legitimate reasons to limp… i.e. one leg shorter than the other, or they have an injury. But, even when we do minor injuries to ourselves that should not make us limp, we still do, to compensate and save us from more pain. However, after a while, once the injury has heeled, we can invariably and unconsciously continue to limp without even realising it. Further, even if we focus on not limping, we'll find there's no pain there. It's just become a habit. Some survival mechanism in our brain that is on autopilot.

Amazing. You've just answered a question I had this morning. My life story is very much the same. As I fix the layers of damage over time, I have come to wonder just how it happened. I could only explain the peripheral troubles to compensation. I tore muscles up and down my back. Now I've spent two years rolling my right glute on a lacrosse ball. Two freaking years? Damn, I never even hurt my glute that I know of. All I know if I'm grateful for the knowledge. It can be fixed. It ain't easy.

Pretty sure I have a groin strain. No one can diagnose it. No scans have picked it up. Everything comes up normal. Waiting for an MRI. It has gotten better but is still not healed 7 weeks later. Thank you for this informative and explanatory video! Do NOT listen to the naysayers below who are obviously missing the point of this video, which you articulated superbly. This has offered me some mental relief, and has definitely given me insight as to how to proceed with the exact same groin injury that i experienced 3 weeks ago, just under different circumstances. The orthopedist claimed via x-ray that i had an acetabular fracture and to apply no weight to my leg for minimum 2 months. Well, my bones really seem almost fine already, which makes me question the original diagnosis, but i still have lingering to constant pain in my groin. Especially as i lift my knee towards my chest. Therefor i have been really confused as to whether or not to stretch and exercise vs relaxing and staying off my leg. This video (as well as your others, as i'm now a subscriber) has provided me with the tools to move forward to full recovery. Thanks again, Matt!

I did bro, I consistently used arnica-based creams, three times a day or more for several days. I did careful stretches during that time. Every other day I would get into a hot hot tub and stay in it for a while. And most most most importantly I would massage it against the muscle fibers using deep penetration for about 30min at one go. There are proper KZbin videos on how to massage that area. Massage it for 30 minutes a day. Also when in the tub. I think it took me about eight to nine days. But had to be extra careful not to irritate it and walk consciously.

Since Rolfing has no scientific basis and has been shown to be a pseudoscience, I'd be chary about taking any advice from you, especially as I'm an older person who couldn't perform the exercises you recommend in all your other videos in the first place. I have a groin pull. When I have rested long enough to see the swelling go down, along with the pain when I put ANY pressure on it, I'll take my doctor's EVIDENCE-BASED advice for strengthening it again.
