Anybody else picturing Wilt dunking from a standing position at the free throw line instead of a running start? I know it’s impossible but given how much of a freak athlete the man was I can’t help but think of this being the way he did it
@Mr_Jish2 жыл бұрын
@@janoycresnova9156 Except you're most likely wrong (and I only even say most likely to give you a shred of benefit of the doubt, so take that how you will). Wilt Chamberlain was a freak athlete; that means basketball as well as other sports, one of those being track and field in which there are [apparently] official records of him broad jumping 22 feet. For reference, the distance between the free throw line to the basket is 15 feet. Pretty sure that's attainable for a guy that had a 48 inch vertical, could high jump 6 ft 6 in, and was some kind of athletic marvel. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of those guys that progressively wishes his records in the league would have asterisks strictly because I don't think anyone will ever come close to them. But in terms of your argument, I genuinely feel like you're just factually wrong. Sorry, guy.

He had a really good record in the 400 hurdles and high jumped over 6'6" (documented in a track meet; no idea what his PB was). Since he was 7'1", a fast runner, and literally a high jumper, I would be shocked if he couldn't dunk from the FT line. A bunch of NBA players have been able to do it and Wilt is a freak athlete even by NBA standards; it would be a real surprise if he couldn't. Now later in his career he almost certainly couldn't dunk from the FT line. This would have to be in his first couple years when he still had all his athleticism. Penalties in soccer/football work in a similar fashion. You have the highest success change if you shoot straight down the middle (because the goalie definitely will go to either corner of the goal), yet because you'd look stupid in case you fail, very few people ever go for it. Shooting in the corner is about 75% of making it and 25% of "too bad, the goalie was better", shooting in the middle is about 95% of making it and 5% of "what a moron, why did he shoot in the middle, such an idiot".

@Walmartin862 жыл бұрын
I think the problem would be more in a late game situation. Intentionally missing a free throw and making sure to hit the rim is hard enough. If you make it so you can dunk the person shooting could miss and rebound and score way to easily because players can’t move till ball hits the rim so the positioning a free throw shooter could get with help of teammates boxing out and not even going for a rebound would be way to easy to manipulate.
@imightbebiased93112 жыл бұрын
Not quite, only the shooter can't move until the ball hits the rim. Everyone else can move once the ball's released. However, on a dunk attempt, if the player can jump far enough, they can throw the ball off the rim to themselves at close range and put it back in for 2 points before the rebounders would really have a chance to react. Also, imagine how funny that would be when it's a late game situation and you've got a clearly gassed big who can't shoot FTs trying to dunk from the line and coming up like 5 feet short.

They could do it on almost every trip to the line. Make the first one then intentionally miss the second with an automatic rebound at the rim for an easy 2. The absolute worst part of basketball is the last 2-3 minutes of a semi-close game when one team is deliberately fouling opponents to stop the clock and try and get the ball back after free throws. Personally I love the idea of eliminating the no dunk on free throw rule. If the team that was fouled could give the ball to a player who could dunk from the free throw line, it’s a guaranteed 2 (or 3) points every time that player is fouled. That would end the late game shenanigans that make basketball unwatchable and force teams to make their comebacks earlier in the game. Plus, watching guys dunk from the FT line would be friggin awesome. I’m just imagining Shaq breaking the backboard on a free throw. LMAO. Entertainment gold!

There are probably more elegant ways to handle it. Here's one: For every foul against the team, the opposing team gets an extra free throw attempt. First foul? 1. Fourth foul? 4. I figured that they were going to mention that Wilt's free throw percentage was actually a lot higher earlier in his career when he used to shoot underhand. The issue being that it was harder to get just the right amount of force behind the ball given all the extra leverage from such a long wingspan. So underhand was a way to get the right arc and accuracy and take some of that extra juice off the shot. But then he gave into peer pressure and adopted the more conventional/less sissy method. Wait, so what is the penalty for doing it? Because if it's minor enough, I wanna see someone just do it anyway in garbage time, kinda like that figure skater who did a backflip. Also, is there a possibility for it be actually be a tactical advantage, like when that one soccer player intentionally committed a handball to help his team advance (which I'd love to see a video on, btw)? Like, if it's a technical foul, I can envision this scenario: Team A has a big lead, player A1 sucks at free throws and has a technical already, and both teams are out of timeouts, so Team B is repeatedly fouling A1. Team A can't call a timeout, and A1 is always the one shooting the free throws, so Team A can't substitute him out. If he dunks from the line, though, he would be ejected, and they could put in a better free-throw shooter. Being the team with a big lead, Team A could afford the technical foul.
@deepowls78732 жыл бұрын
It's a violation just like a free throw failing to hit the rim. In either case, on the last attempt, the coach could substitute for the shooter after a violation (or made free throw). An official could get creative and call a technical foul for unsporting behavior on a dunked free throw. Getting him ejected only makes sense if you have just 5 healthy players left and you feel you'd be better off with just 4. There are rules against intentional fouls, so that seems unnecessary.

Dr. J also did it in the 1976 Slam Dunk Contest. Both he and Jordan stepped well over the line, though. Dr. J's foot was almost entirely in front of the line. The free throw line pretty much bisected Jordan's foot.

The earliest record of a freethrow line dunk is from the late 40s-early 50s, by Jim "Kangaroo Kid" Pollard, the sf star from the early 50s Lakers dynasty, apparently he used to dunk from the fr line at the end of warm ups as said by his teammates and coaches

I wouldn't want this rule removed because it would eliminate free throws as a whole. Why take a standard no-jump jump shot when you can hop several feet forward for an easy uncontested floater or even just jump for a normal jump shot. Giving players the ability to cross the line would ultimately not enhance free throws currently but make them something entirely different.

Hey Secret Base, I was wondering what the history of late bloomer quarterbacks is? I know there are a couple such as Steve Young that turn into HoF, but is it a common thing? Or does NFL say something different? I curious after the Russell Wilson trade, and the Seahawks getting Drew Lock as part of the huge haul in return? It seems to be rare that top QB or athletes on the track for the HoF to be traded at all at their peak, or mid career. So, is there any precedent across sports for the RW trade, and did the team that trade away that star easily replace that star? Being a fan of the channel, this kinda feels like a future collapse episode, or a history episode like the Seattle Mariners, or Atlanta falcon series.

Wilt was a standing broad jump champ and a triple-jump champ. No one else could have dunked from the free-throw line without a running start.

Wilt changed the rules. If that rule hadn’t been put in place, players would have jumped from the free throw line and then gathered their easy rebound for an automatic put in. That’s the main reason it had to be established.

I think a HUGE thing they're not considering is the effect jumps like that would have on your knees. Big men that can do that type of thing already have their careers cut short due to knee problems. Zion would play one game a season under this rule (suppose that'd be one more than he played this season, but still). This sounds fun, but would not be sustainable. In his first 14 seasons, Wilt averaged above 10 FTs per game. No way he could've done that to his knees. It's very to see a big man last long, and we love Wilt, Bill Russel, Shaw for doing that and wish Yao, Zion could have had more playing time. I don't want their excellence cut even shorter, as much as I would like to see this

Very few, if any, players could do this since the player needs to stay within the free throw circle. No run-up. Even with a huge run up, Jordan had his foot all over the line in the dunk contest. [ETA: In 1985, Jordan might have stayed behind the line, but it was close. He still took very long run-up.] If this rule were didn't exist, the more exploitative play would be, on your last attempt, to jump, touch the rim with the basketball but hold on to it. After landing, dunk the ball for 2 points.
@Tim_Dunkin Жыл бұрын
Seems like there'd be a loophole. Technically the ball is still in your hand the ball is part of the body & you aren't touching the floor past the free throw line until the ball goes through the hoop.

Yes, it was against Wilt. There would probably only be 4 or 5 players, ever, who could do the same thing from inside the doll-head and behind the free shot line. Wilt is my choice for the greatest of all time, and my co-favorite player to watch play the game. That said, I do agree that it is a "free throw", not a free dunk, or layup.

This is why Wilt is the for real greatest...because he dominated the game so much they had to change the rules (most notably the three second rule and defensive goaltending) because of him (and early in his career was considered quitting because he was tired of being 4x/5x teamed so much)! He was most definitely the Wayne Gretzsky of the era as he held most every major individual record you can think of. I don't recall Jordan or Shaq or LeBron or any of the other greatest contenders getting 3x/4x/5x teamed nearly as often and they certainly didn't cause rule changes to neutralize them!
