Overthinking and anxiety can be overwhelming and exhausting. To detach from these feelings, it's important to practice mindfulness, focus on the present moment, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Try to challenge negative thoughts and reframe them in a positive light. Remember to prioritize self-care and seek support from loved ones or a mental health professional if needed. With time and effort, you can detach from overthinking and anxiety and cultivate a sense of inner peace and calm.

Indeed. Many people are their own worse enemy in that regard. It comes from losing your objectivity which is easily done. No matter how much training you have or how intelligent you are. As we see here, even a psychologist does things she'd normally spot straight away in a patient but she can't see herself doing often. Because doesn't have the same objectivity as when dealing with patients. It's just the nature of being human and the whole nature of ego and conscious thought. We tend to be very critical of ourselves and prone to self-doubt some of us. Anxiety disorders are often a learned behaviour, a negative bias outlook and feedback loop which as you say, you can detach from by developing mindfulness which is a very powerful tool I recommend. I learned that myself through CBT after suffering with anxiety for years. When you practice mindfulness you regain objectivity and are able to recognize thoughts and feelings as being irrational and unhelpful, so can learn to change how you think and behave. When you learn mindfullness and start applying it in your daily life it's like a relevation if you suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, compulsive/addictive behaviours or whatever. Suddenly you realise that you don't have to feel and experience that or think that way anymore. Some people have been doing it for so long, often most their lives, it seems normal, and even comfortable to them often. For many people it's a kind of self-protection mechanism against fear or rejection, or a way of coping with unresolved past trauma in their lives. We create our own realities in the mind which is an incredibly powerful thing as we've seen from many of Darren's experiments. Interestingly, although psychology is still a developing medical science and tools like mindfulness have only started to become more widely adopted in clinical practice fairly recently relatively speaking, if you study the ancient religion and philosophy of Buddhism, it has all these tools incorporated. It's likely the source of mindfullness and how it got incorporated into modern psychology. Practising daily mindfulness, thought and action/cause and effect awareness and controlling the mind through meditation are core teachings of Buddhism which the Buddha gained through Enlightenment. Quite incredible really for a religion 5,000 years old. It's a very practical largely science-based belief system that puts central importance on understanding and improving your own mind and behaviour,. In doing so, you're making life for yourself and others better, from developing awareness and compassion for yourself and others.

I’m 56 - I can say anxiety has ruined my life. It’s like having a bad itch in every cell of your body - you can’t just ignore it or concentrate on something else to make it go away by. Or it’s like a bad flu that you want to feel better but you can’t because your sick. Terrible affliction. A massive weight that makes you feel like your drowning in mental discomfort. Makes me want to scream in anger just writing this comment.

Almost 30 years ago I was climbing in the Alps and suffered a fall with severe hip, knee, shoulder, spine and brain injury. I could no longer climb and after 6 solid months in a neurology ward in a hospital 6000 miles from home, learning to walk, talk and cope with my new reality, I was told I could never return to my medical career. Upon returning home I did not remember my wife or children…I started all over again. I was so bound to my career and my climbing accomplishments that my first decision was to commit suicide. But I couldn’t drive to the mountain where I decided to die. I experienced severe anxiety for almost 10 years. I had to unlearn the centrality of my work ethic to my ‘personhood’ that I had created. I had to learn to be honest with myself. Jordan Peterson said something profound that altered my way of coping. “Strive to be good. And if you are happy along the adventure of your life you are very fortunate”. I had to stop being all the jobs and persona’s that I wanted people to think of me as and start simply being honest. Within weeks my anxiety, panic attacks and constant agonizing stress vanished. I am not who I was. I am who I am. I am what I say, do and think now. Today. I still suffer memory loss and aphasia, time loss and constant migraines… I become foggy after several minutes of concentration on any task. I am not the same person. But I am intellectually intact. I am still married, now 40 years, my children and grandchildren love us. But above all I am now honest. Julie is right…we have to change to survive. We have to develop coping strategies that are successful…not convenient. We have to seek out the best things that are an honest reflection of who we are. This was another great video! Thanks much for another thoughtful analysis.

The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. Randomly discovering Dr.Julie Smith now on KZbin and it literally lands in my life at the perfect time. I ve been my own therapist/confident/best friend/worst enemy for as long as I remember and listening to her tackle so many mental/behavioral issues we all encounter as humans are some point, truly makes my day!.. I also realize how much my accute intuition, self awareness, resilience, empathy, ability to question everything and be curious rather than judgemental, truly saved me from going down the dark bottom spot that many cannot come back from. I ve always been drawn to psychology and the human behavior, and because of my natural people skills and empathy, it drew a lot of people of all psychological patterns to me. I m grateful to be listening to someone like Dr.Smith talk so genuinely and truthfully about everything I already knew and practiced. Sitting with your thoughts without the escapist quick fixes of the many things we rush to in order to avoid uncomfortable painful feelings is by far the toughest thing I ve done so far a d that she describes so accurately. Sending love and support to everyone struggling today 🙏🏽❤️ With time, awareness, patience, compassion, and love, there is always a light at the end of that dark tunnel ✨️

Hello there! Firstly, I'd like to thank you , for inviting Dr Julie on your channel & discussing such important topics that almost everyone of us go through either once. It's been a while since I've joined Dr.Julie's official youtube channel & it helped me a LOT. As mentioned in the video, 🔸anxiety & 🔸stress is something that can be pretty 🔹overwhelming & even 🔹frustrating sometimes, and all of us go through a certain period where we face these things.Lately, I've been a lil' stressed out due to some issues & my goals as well because, you know I've always had some ▪dreams & 🔸aims & some 🔹plans for my ✴future & ✴career, ✴my studies and, it's like, just a start for me to implement my thoughts in practical life, as I've made a step forward for myself, by that, I mean I've started setting goals & I'm trying my best to achieve them. I'm just an 8th standard student, but there's a lot that I've planned for myself, s everyone do. I believe that there isn't a specific age for, you know, 🔷planing and 🔶aiming for things. Dr.Julie's channel helped me so much to cope up & tackle with my stress & struggles. I truly appreciate how she shares her therapies with us & the way she utilizes her study of psycology other than her profession, here on KZbin. THANK YOU.❤

I’m so glad dr julie mentioned the idea of “don’t love anybody else until you love yourself.” I’ve often think that I need to master self love before I even put myself out there & it just makes me feel so anxious as to what does that even look like?? How does one reach there? The standard has put so much pressure on me personally. Thanks so much for making me feel like it’s ok not have to live up to that standard ❤

Well as a guy, a knowledge addict and a born over thinker, I however have grown beyond societal expectations, norms, stigma and and because I have self respect, and just chose to rise above such trivial nonsense, but I still don't reveal my emotions because I haven't found anyone worthy or otherwise savy enough to understand them. Spent most of my life alone, 1 or 2 honest friends, and valued my isolation to garner wisdom I think few would ever achieve. That now the most difficult part, is finding someone to speak to on the same lvl let alone share your deepest emotions with. But thats just me of course. Hehehe it however doesn't take much for others to throw all their emotional baggage onto me you see. Men or woman, and I know why, as being able to connect with them from just a simple few words spoken reveals all they are. Most people are not complicated, and if your a professional at observing the consistencies of life, then nothing remains new for very long.

It was the Gary Neville one that got me, i must admit, I find these podcasts more educational and the topics that get spoken about hit home in a way i'd never imagine. PLEASE KEEP THESE COMING THEY'RE HAVING A MASSIVE IMPACT ALREADY IN THE WAY I CAN DEAL WITH CHALLENGING THINGS! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!

Making meaningful change is like turning around an ocean liner. It takes time. I have also learnt that it is not a good idea to change too many things at once. Make a single chance, bed it down so it sticks. Then change another aspect of your life and so on

My first time listening to both parties. Tons of cheers for such an engaging conversation. Dr. Smith is so inspirational ~ a lot of what she mentions resonates well, I love people, have three kids, want to be the best mom and then add more into life. Really looking for the opportunity to work with her 🙏

This podcast sets the bar of my engagement, enjoyment, and the usefulness to me, extremely high, and it keeps hitting that bar and sometimes even raising it further... so no pressure to Steven or to Dr Julie Smith but you must not stop doing what you do. What you do here is greatly appreciated and greatly helps.

Wow that episode really hit home. I suddenly found the reason why I trash every relationship I get in when I get to a certain point. Its like I can find a red flag with anything it doesnt matter how small it is and that's it then I'm off on my way convincing myself that that small reason is more than enough to leave that relationship in the past. I guess knowing this and reprogramming myself when I feel it happening next time is the challenge but at least it makes sense now why I do it. Couple that up with a tweet I recently read "Every one of my exes has gone on to meet the love of their lives right after me-always genuinely fantastic people, often extremely intelligent and kind. Meanwhile I'm having to face the fact that I may well be the problem." I guess it's time to face up to my weaknesses and try to develop 😬 Thank you

This is the first time I listen to a psychologist or psychoanalyst that I find down to earth and say things how they are,,,, ...loved it...yes, I agree with that stupidity about loving yourself before you love someone..I had an amazingly loving husband for 30 years until he passed away...and don't know if at that time 20yrs old I loved myself..I know we adored each other and wanted to be together doing things together

People don’t understand the way the mind works. That’s why so many of us suffer with anxiety. The amazing thing is that most non clinical mental health issues and many quite severe clinical disorders, are very well managed by simply grounding ourselves and effectively teaching our mind to focus on the here, and the now! Taking control of your mental health will be one of, if not the most liberating experience you will ever have. The problem is however, it usually takes people to be in a very bad place in order to receive help with their mental health. If anyone here is experiencing problems. I sincerely hope that you can get the help that you need. As the late great Sigmund Freud said and I quote: “The aim of Psychological Therapy is to transform neurotic misery into common unhappiness.”

I went through this and the best way to do it is stop being attached to the outcome, more specifically, what could have been. I say "what could have been" because you're not attached to what is. You're attached to making it what you thought it was going to be. Once you can let go of what "could have been" you truly let go and it leaves your mind slowly, but it starts to keave. You have to surrender completing your mission. And just say it's gonna happen the way it's suppossed to

@The Diary Of A CEO. Thanks for organising this Steve. I've had the chance to watch a lot of your podcast episodes in succession over the last few months. Quick observation - you've questioned numerous guests on the topic of imposter syndrome & coping with criticism especially in the setting of heightened success. Have you ever thought about why that is? A vulnerable episode of you sharing you own thoughts on this would be insightful. Big fan. Keep up the good work. Would love to attend one of your episodes! - J

I actually had a discussion with myself, over a decade ago, where I was sitting waiting for someone, and I was debating with myself whether or not the person I was waiting for even liked me (yes, it was a girl I liked). I realized that my thoughts on the matter wouldn't matter until she got there and I could see and experience what she felt and thought about me, so I made a deal with myself to stop overthinking as soon as I was aware of it. So, little by little, I stopped the harmful overthinking and though it still pops up from time to time, especially in times of emotional stress, I can deal with it better than I did when I was younger. It is like debating whether there will be rain tomorrow or not. You can't affect it, so you only have to take a bit of precaution not to get wet if it does start to rain. I also made a deal to avoid getting upset if I forgot it a few times, as overthinking is quite normal. What I still do, and what I hate, is when embarrassing moments from the past pop into my head in the most unlikely situations. Not sure if that is just me, but as I have gathered, it is not.

Over 54 years my anxiety hits me really fast. I’m a fitness professional and my body is in a really fit state. The anxiety can build me the worst stomach ache in about 1 minute of not thinking clearly and I barrel up in the abdominal area. I’ve done breathing techniques for years now when this happens but now I have it down Pat in 4 breaths I breath in the good and breath out as long as I can the past and the bad. It works like no tomorrow. It was something I just tried about a month ago because the breathing in for 4 sec hold for 7 seconds and Brest out for 8 seconds took about 5 solid minutes to shift . This new method of breath in the best future and breath out the bad feelings of the past as long as I can is so quickest and fastest way to get back to centre.
