If you have just cancelled, make sure you apply for any refund due. You pay six months in advance on a yearly payment.

Don't worry about the postie thinking your bad or anything. I'm a postman and I'm delivering hundreds of these BBC threatening letters on my delivery every week in sheffield to residential address, shops, business, student accommodations ect, you wouldn't believe how many people have cancelled, and more and more are cancelling. Also all my colleagues are delivering hundreds of these letters and we are just getting pissed off with them. I cancelled my tv licence just over 2 years ago just like some others at my work, I just watch on demand from netflix, amazon ect, and now I get a threatening letter from TV licencing every month so I know what everyone of these letters looks like. Watching live tv is an out of date idea, why should you plan your life around not been able to go out because you might miss something that's on live, catch up tv is the modern way of watching now. When I receive a letter I open it up and look at what it says and laugh and put it in the bin, you are not legally required to reply to them, and the same goes if they do come to your door, just say sorry I'm not interested in watching live TV anymore or any BBC products thank you and then shut the door.

They should do more to make the BBC less controversial. The likes of Lineker and chums are haemorrhaging the corporation millions with their offensive views that many don't like. They waste our money hand over fist, hence having to write this kind of a garbage letter.

The people crafting these letters are not idiots, they know exactly what they're doing. Installing TV receving equipment for the EXPRESS PURPOSE of watching or recording Live TV is an offence, but that is not what the letter said, as it left the other half of that out. It's obviously very VERY dodgy wording, they are very intentionally framing and leaving out as much information as they can to make as many sales as possible. Totally misleading, and it makes me wonder what regulatory body, if any, keeps TV licensing accountable

They've taken a leaf out of the BBC's book by being extremely economical with the truth, hoping there's enough people who are unwise or gullible to their tactics who'll immediately sign-up through fear that if they don't, they'll somehow, 'get into trouble', for daring to own equipment that's capable of receiving live broadcasts, despite not their being no evidence that they're actually using it for that purpose.

I live on a boat and due to an accident |I am unable to drive to my yard, which is my address, I always have loads of these letters, they are just so silly, i invited them a few years ago to come and take a look, they arrived, looked at the vehicles in the yard (all circus trucks) said, oh it is ok and left...... they not been back..... yet

Be aware that unique textual identifiers can be inserted into letters ...... especially the name that letters arre "signed by", in order to track non-payers down.

That is very similar to the letter I got end of October also signed by the ficticious Ms Garwood. I cancelled in March and the previous licence ran to end of September. I phoned up in March and they said I was due a refund but I was so p!ssed off with them I politely said 'I don't require a refund, send it to Lineker he obviously needs the cash'. I will now follow your advice, be polite if they knock the door and say 'no thanks' as i close the door.

Jesus wept. Some people say the BBCs output is mediocre or poor now, but you've just given a load of examples of how dire it was in the past. Even when I did pay online with the tv license card the wording they used was forceful and quite rude, pay x amount immediately in red etc. I don’t worry and I don’t miss bbc or tv at all, it is ancient history and obsolete.

It's a truly bizarre situation that the TVL exists in the current age. The word 'anachronism' doesn't even do it justice. It's actually a proper unjustifiable extortion of the poor and vunerable. Because no wealthy person cares about paying £159/year. In fact, that might just be the way to get it removed. Make it a sliding scale payment so that the wealthy pay more TVL. And stand back and watch it be abolished faster than you can say "HOW DARE YOU!" Because if there's one thing rich people don't like, it's spending money.

Actually owning a TV as long as not used to view live programmes does not need a licence , you can legally view DVD , Blue Ray , on demand catch up programmes that you view at a time to suit you , or use as a computer monitor legally without a licence ,The main offence , the one most prosecuted is the section of the law that is If you install or cause to be installed any device as a TV receiver with the intention to view or allow other to view live TV without a licence you are committing a criminal offence , Currently around 2000 cases a week are being held , most charged with that section is the Act , and it’s the section most state is wrong ,

I redacted my details of one of their letters and posted it back to Darlington with "You send me your rubbish, I send you mine". I added potato peelings, other junk mail and a load of used cotton buds after cleaning my ears to them. OK, it cost me a 2nd Class stamp, but made me feel good.

The most stupid thing in that letter is; anyone can watch live on their device at the office if they have a license at home but as long as it's not plugged into the mains electricity on the premises. It's because actual TVs need to be plugged into the mains. So imagine if you own a second home, a holiday property etc. it's worded so that if you have a TV in there, you'll need a 2nd licence. A device that can run without being plugged into the mains covers more temporary methods of viewing, such as on a laptop or tablet, meaning you're legally covered if you have a licence at home but use such devices to watch TV while you're away. I think that's the crux of it, it ensures that people who rent out holiday properties or own second homes must pay for a licence for that property as well as their own if they are going to have a regular TV in there for their use or the use of people staying in the property. There was a time not long ago when it was 50/50 as to whether or not a holiday cottage would have a TV in! I had a lovely stay in the Yorkshire Dales back in the early 90s in a lovely cottage with no TV, just a radio. And it wasn't the last time it happened either.

Which is basically all that leaflet, (it's not a letter), that can't even identity the person it's been mailed to, is. It should be obvious where the money they do get is going. They have to keep those executives with their 6 figure salaries happy, after all. Programmes? You don't need a licence to listen to the radio either, yet another lie. If we needed one, do you not think with all the cars vans etc in Britain. They wouldn't be chasing everyone for their tax, loosing out on all that revenue.

Strange how I never receive letters from Bentley, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce or Lamborghini demanding to know why I haven't purchased one of their products, never called at my home either. Must only be the criminally harrasing TV Licence goons who have no fear of using scam tactics to fraudulently pressure people to pay for a TV license they may not need. Scumsters.
