I love having hot herbal tea during my periods. Soothes the tummy , the tongue and the soul. I go for organic infusions instead of going for anything with caffeine or tannin. These are all caffeine/tannin free. Here are some of my favourite brands. :

​@@leobox6385 usually it is a good idea to avoid heating practices like suryanamaskars at east on the first few days. If you want to do you can do slow rhythmic suryanamaskars. Personally I don't do suryanamaskars on day 1 and 2 .Sometimes on Day 3 if i feel like doing them I add them to my practice. I do them slow and steady, taking time in each pose. Thanks for this video. I was looking for an informational video like this because I remember my Mom always told me growing up that certain yoga poses are detrimental during the period. I find that a lot of western yoga teachers don't understand the science around the asanas, so your explanation was super helpful!

Your are so right Shilpa. Often our mom's and grandmom's gave us knowledge which was rooted in ancient indian wisdom. Sadly nowadays it is considered as superstition. And even I find so many yoga teachers doing all sorts of things in periods or in pregnancy too. It's important we come back to our roots. Thanks for your lovely words. Same even I don't feel doing yoga on 1st day and I avoid that day completely....I just do walk for 30mins which helps to release pain

I totally get you. For majority of us this is the case. We just feel like taking it easy! I've never tried going for a long walk during periods but I just do a couple simple things lying down on bed on Day 1. I even like to do some mudras , they help a lot with pain too. Have you tried mudras or simple poses?

Thankyou so much for this, it was really helpful. If possible, can you please make a video on a yoga sequence for uterus problems. My mumma has a loose uterus (idk the scientific term), she feels like it'll come out if she stands for too long. Doctor is telling her to do stretches only to avoid getting operated. She does some of them. But it would be really helpful if you could make a video with all the exercises and Pranayamas that can and cannot be practiced in such situations. It would be really helpful. Thank you so much🙏

We can do Anulom Viloma that will help infact. But we don't do kapalbhati pranayama during periods. Kapalbhati is heating and on top it will not feel very good for the abdomino pelvic region . Hope this helped kaira :)

Aastha it's usually a good idea to avoid them both. Coffee is a vasoconstrictor. It means it causes the blood vessels to constrict to an extent. Coffee during periods isn't a good idea as it may cause blood vessels that feed the uterus to tighten and make period cramps even worse. Go for teas that are caffeine free and tannin free. Both coffee and tea can mess up your natural sleep cycle too. If possible avoid them and go for Herbal Infusions. If you are totally a tea person you can reduce the quantity may be :) I love taking herbal infusions during my periods instead of tea coffee ( and I stay away from tea/coffee in general too) Hope this helped you

And a consistent yoga practice will also be helpful ( especially during the time when you do not have your periods) . Thanks for the informational video. Could you suggest if Mandookasana can be done safely during that time? (Checking as there is some pressure given on the navel area in this Asana)

Hi Sunmeeta, Thanks for appreciating the video . Means a lot to us. Mundookasana would place a little pressure around the abdomen , yes. It's not a lot of dynamic pressure though like sun salutations, running etc. As per ayurveda we are told not to do asanas where we lie down on the belly. Lying on the stomach usually isn't recommended during your period as the excess pressure on the abdomen could potentially cause the uterus to contract more, expelling your uterine lining faster, resulting in a heavier bleed. Mandookasana is technically not lying down on belly but if done with too much pressure it might have a similar feel. It's neither here nor there :P Personally I do like to hug my belly during periods. It feels comforting to me when I'm in pain. Mandukasana might feel like a nice hug to the belly I feel. I would say try it during periods and see. If I were you and wanted to do mandookasana in my periods , I would not press too hard and I would listen to my body too , see whether it feels good for my body or not. I would do variations instead of the fists pressing into belly . I would hold my opposite elbows or keep a pillow between thighs and belly for something even softer. Hi Vaishnavi, Yoga helps with maintaining overall good health. To say that you will gain weight if you stop doing yoga wouldn't be right. Although I don't see any reason to stop doing yoga once you start, as there's only benefits :) Even if you stop doing the practice, the benefits you gained from it will not go away just because you stopped. You may lose the extra muscle strength you build in your body gradually but you won't go back unless you make your lifestyle completely unhealthy, your eating and sleeping habits go for a toss, you take too much stress and so on.. You are most welcome :) It's best to avoid Kapalbhati during periods as it will increase the heat in the body, which may cause heavier bleeding. It also puts excessive pressure on the abdominal region which is already strained during our periods. It'll be good if you can avoid it in periods. You can do other pranayamas. Pranayama during menstruation can help balance emotions and can calm the mind. It can even help reduce pain. During periods you can safely do Bhramari, Anulom viloma , Ujjayi, Sheetali and Sitkari. Subhashini a consistent yoga practice and a good lifestyle will help a long way in having a good flow during periods. Taking care of the mind through some pranayama and meditation will also help. A few things that can help: 1. Practice asanas everyday. A holistic practice involving everything for the rest of the month plus a very laid back practice during periods. Manasa in case you have any abnormality in bleeding recently , you might wanna check with a specialist( as it can be hormonal imbalance). A few asanas can be done throughout the month that can help regulate heavy flow ( These asanas are not to be done during periods though). You can practice Sarvangasana , Sirshasana, Halasana, Vipreet Karani ( you can add ashwini mudra if you are aware of it) for the rest of the month except the period days .Hope this helped you.

Surya Namaskar can definitely help with weight loss. It will be most effective though with proper food and a good lifestyle. As to how many suryanamaskars one can do really depends on your body type and your strength. If you are a beginner you can start with 2- 3 rounds and keep adding 1 round every 2 days. You should never be exhausted after the practice. As per ayurveda, as soon as you start breathing through your mouth it means you are over exerting. So keep that in mind and you'll be good to go. ( And as far as coffee is concerned we don't recommend any kind of coffee or any stimulants. Better do bhastrika than coffee)

@@gitasingh30093 Tummy fat can be the most rigid one to lose but consistency and clean eating is the key. Hi Shivangi,, I wonder about that at times too.. I know of friends who compete in competitions during those times and just go through it all. It's tough. Nowadays so many women also feel pride in competing with men and want to be their equal. which end up causing more harm than good i feel. Each one should honour their unique nature.We are different , our bodies are different. The care we need is different too. Every sports organisation or any other organisation for that matter, should also be honoring these differences and give female athletes the time off during these days.. We can only dream of tis for now.. I do hope this becomes true one day! Till then we can spread awareness together though, right?

Sameeksha it totally depends on how your body feels that day. If you feel ready and there is little to no blood you may add one or two inversions. Personally I increase the intensity on the last day but avoid inversions.

Gentle Forward Bends can give a light massage to the abdominal and pelvic region and can help relieve cramps and heaviness. The key word being 'Gentle'. That can be different for different people. Usually it is a good idea to do poses like Janu Sheershasana to 50-60% of your capacity during your periods or do them with the support of pillows/bolsters. Not 50-60% of what the actual pose looks like but 50-60% of your capacity on a normal regular day. That way you ensure that it is gentle on your body. And it's always good to listen to your body, if any pose feels like it is too much for the body you don't really need to practice it. Our awareness is the best guide in these scenarios . Hi Swetha , Yes you can. You can do simple ones , like Nadi Shodhan(alternate nostril breathing), Bhramari ,Ujjai etc. Avoid Kapalbathi, Agnisara etc which put pressure on abdomen.

Hina it would be good to avoid Kapalbhati. It would directly affect the abdomino pelvic region and we don't want to cause more pressure there or aggravate it during the periods. At least avoid it for the first few days of periods

Ma'am at what time the exercises for periods should be done?? I mean cramps gets high at anytime and sometimes it unbearable So is it good if I do ur exercises for periods after having food also?? Hi Dimple , When it comes to yoga it is usually a good idea to wait for 2-3 hrs after a proper meal. If you have had something very light like fruits, you can wait for about 30 mins. There are two things you can do. 1. Take care of your food, exercise, lifestyle - before your period starts, which is basically the rest of the month. Maintain a good diet and a regular yoga regime throughout the month. 2. Take care of yourself during the periods. You can do yoga asanas which will help ease period cramps and pain and you can do mudras as well. We have made a special video on mudras, these you can do anytime , anywhere . These are the mudras you can practice when you have cramps. You don't need to avoid all breathing exercises. Avoid Kapalbhati , you can do nadi shodana, brahmari, sheetali etc. Meditation in periods is infact helpful. you should definitely meditate

Priyanka usually it is a good idea to avoid heating practices like suryanamaskars at least on the first few days. They will place strain on the abdomino pelvic region, which is already under strain as it is. It also depends on how much bleeding you have and how much energy you have during your periods. If you want to do, you can do very slow rhythmic suryanamaskars. Personally I don't even feel like thinking about suryanamaskars on day1😂. I just feel like resting or doing very simple asanas. I don't do suryanamaskars on day 1 and 2 .Sometimes on Day 3 if I feel like doing them, I add them to my practice. If I do them, I go slow and steady, taking time in each pose. Hope this was helpful.

Thanks :) If you are trying to conceive and not sure if you have conceived or not, it's better to stick to super simple things in the waiting period. No Suryanamaskars, inversions or any physically taxing practices for the body. (For PCOD we have a video that can be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGXMp39jqZine9U) You would really need to make changes in your lifestyle and food too for pcod.

When it comes to mudras and pranayamas , we avoid all the heating practices and go for balancing or cooling pranayamas(provided it is not cold) . During Periods few mudras will help you a lot. It depends on how your 5th day of periods is. For instance my period lasts 7 days and I have little bleeding by day 5. So sometimes I do kapalbhati on day 5 but most times I wait till my periods end. When to start kapalbhati totally depends on how you feel on day 5 and how your periods are. I would definitely advice to avoid kapalbhati on the first few days of periods definitely. Personally I don't do kapalbhati at all on the first 3-4 days of my periods.

You are most welcome. It is not recommended. Curd or anything that is spicy/ sour isn't a good idea. My mother and grandmother always used to tell me not to have curd/buttermilk/pickles etc during periods. Whenever I have curd or anything sour( especially on the first 2 days) I feel the cramps and pain get worse. Although it different for everyone, but it is still a good idea to keep it simple and light. Hope this answered you question :)

Surbhi it is not a good idea to do any inversions in periods. The reverse the prana flow which is not something we want during periods. Now that you've already done , you can just forget about it, And from the next time on you can skip them totally : ) Hope this helped

In our Periods our Abdomino-Pelvic region is already under strain, causing spasms and may be even pain. Intense practices cause even more contraction and Pressure to the strained area.They also need more Physical Strength which is lacking as our body is using that energy to expel the uterus lining and the unfertilized egg from our body. It’s usually good to keep our practice light. Hope this answered your question :)

Ravina it's a combination of lifestyle, right food and yoga. A continuous yoga practice and good eating habits during the rest of the month and proper rest, food and light yoga during periods. Go by how your body feels like. It is different for every woman. Some woman feel they are back to normal by 4th or 5th day. If you are one of them you can go for a little intense practice. But be mindful and keep observing how you feel before, during and after the practice.

Hi Saradha.. It is better to avoid surya namaskar during periods. Our abdomino pelvic cavity is already under strain during periods and sun salutations will just add on to that strain. It is better to avoid them on the first 2 days atleast. Also depends on how your flow is and how you feel . Depending on that you can start adding them slowly. Hope this helped you

Ansika if your body feels up to it you can do it. Calf stretches in downward dog can feel really good for a few ladies. 1st - 2nd day listen to your body and practice only if your body is up to it. 3rd day onwards you can most definitely add :) Hope this helped you.

Yes Sneha. Most definitely. Forward folds will help. The only thing you should take care of during periods is to do them with ease and comfort , rather than forcing the body to be more flexible. In that case Vishali you should avoid kapalbhati . But you can do other pranayamas during the time you are bleeding. You can do Nadi Shodana, brahmari, ujjai, Sitali , seetkari, Yogic Breathing. Manasa Kapalbhati pranayama is not advised during periods. It is better to avoid anything that involves too much stimulation below the navel. Jyothsna add these asanas to your practice when you do not have your periods: Sarvangasana , Shirshasana , Halasanasana , Vipreetkarani with Ashwini Mudra. Practice Sectional Breathing - that will also help stabilise the energy. Also maintain a regular yoga practice , eat well and meditate . Let us know if this helped you :)

Puja Mandukasana may place strain on the abdomino pelvic cavity which is already under strain in periods. It might be better to skip it for the 1st few days. A

Anoloma Viloma or Nadi Shodana pranayama can be done. It is very good infact. We usually avoid heating pranayamas Deepika. Hope that answered your question.

Ananya usually we don't go for Surya Namaskars during Periods.If you feel like doing them though and If you don't have any heavy bleeding or cramping you can do. But it should not be performed in a fast manner. Do each asana with awareness and very slowly. Let me know if this helped you :) -Khush

You are welcome any time Ananya. Yes once your flow reduces you just need to listen to your body and practice. That's all. Infact during your flow also you can practice only the type of practice will change. We made a 3 days yoga series to be done during periods. One is a lying down ( in bed practice) perfect for Day 1 , Day 2 is a gentle sitting practice with some pillows and pampering and day 3 gets a bit of movement into the body .Leaving the link for it for you: kzbin.info/aero/PLz6S27MU8Nrpxbx4FUpb3FhU5a1fxHLW5 After Day 3 mostly the flow will reduce quite and bit and you can use your discretion to practice one of these or whatever your body feels like that day :) Hope this cleared any doubts you had. - Khush

Yes Roopa, you can do pranayamas like Nadi Shodana, Sheetali and Bhramari. Infact these pranayamas will help you during pranayamas. Mudras will also help a lot during Periods( We have done another video on this too- You can check it out). You should not do pranayamas which place pressure on the abdomino pelvic cavity like Kapalbhati, Agnisara. We have done Asanas and Mudras that will help during periods. You can check out our videos. It's a good idea to usually not strain the abdominal region with abs workout or intense asanas focused on the belly. These place a lot of strain on the abdominal and Pelvic Region. In our Periods our Abdomino-Pelvic region is already under strain, causing spasms and may be even pain. These Intense Practices cause even more Contraction and Pressure to the strained area.They also need more Physical Strength which is lacking as our body is using that energy to expel the uterus lining and the unfertilized egg from our body. Thank you Sameeha.Glad you found it helpful. Hanuman Asana can be an intense stretch for most people. If it is easy for you can do it. But if it is intense for you it is better to just keep it a little light especially on day one of your periods.
