As a little girl I watched my Dad shave every chance I got. Because, wait for it, he was in the Canadian Navy, and was at sea a lot in my childhood. And yes, he would put a bunch of water in the sink after he put in the sink stopper. Then he would put on the shaving cream and shave, shaking out the blade in the water every few strokes. I thought very guy did that!!! But now I learn from Steven, only Navy guys will do that!

Conserve water. After my shower: Oil up face, get water hot and plug sink, soak brush, lather shave soap, let razor sit in hot water for a bit, shave. Shake it out after every few strokes.

This is a straight copy and paste from my comment above because I can't be arsed typing it out again: When it was grown out completely the transition looked quite natural. Beard and top-of-head hair can be different (I think different genes may be involved). I know a guy with a natural red beard (not tinted, properly red) and dark brown hair with the same natural-looking transition, so when Stephen says he doesn't dye it I believe him. Also, if you watch the 'Colbeard' video from back just before the Late Show started, there was a shot of the back of his head which clearly showed grey and white hairs scattered evenly throughout his head hair. Either it's natural or he has one of the best hairdressers in the world doing that dye-job for him.
