Why haven't you updated the console screen to an actual DIGITAL PLATEN? You realize the core driving force of a typewriter as a tool of focus to write is having thought IMPRESSED onto paper, right? It is the mechanical conduit from thought to word as the writer strikes the key and impresses it with ink to paper. Beyond function, it analogizes the entire scribe's existence! The digital platen is the conduit of PURE FOCUS that automatically parses the raw typed words scrolling it up into the e-ink display for consistency, leveraging the writer to keep track of their thoughts when composing a piece of writing. Until you update this crucial feature (really the core identity of an ACTUAL typewriter and what the Freewrite smart typewriter should have had since day one), this thing is nothing but a quasi-typewriter with a hefty price tag. Understand the typewriting process and the mechanics therein which have been honed for over a 100 years!

My favorite writers used typewriters. They're fun to use once you get used to them. Freewrite seems OK but way too much of a premium price.

It is a big invest here, so would be nice if it could be directly conected to a pc and used as a hig cuality keyboard. Imagine being able to use it on a laptop as an student and then unpluging it and keep writing on the bus or train on a just-text task.

This is the quintessential definition of first world privilege BULLSHIT. Here we are so butthurt with our "distractions" that we need to spend $600 on a fucking e-typerwriter which has a 10000ms latency between each keystroke vs. letter showing up on screen. Like you can't make this shit up. This typewriter is for those people who have more money than brains.

I think it’s great that you replicated the old Alpha Smart and Alpha Neo. I owned four of them. Being so old, the machines eventually broke down. I hope your alpha, being very expensive, will be more durable. I own a Traveler and would consider trading it in.

Just having a hard time seeing why it’s 300 dollars. Almost ready to pull out the wallet, just need a little convincing.

Hey, David. We know that Freewrite tools are an investment in your writing. We are a very small team working with small manufacturing batches, contributing to the price point. However, our customers find exceptional value in their Freewrite. Writers in the community see their productivity and word count increase by as much as 2-3x. And to most writers, that's invaluable. We appreciate you taking the opportunity to open a dialogue with us, and we’re honored by your interest in Freewrite. Write on!

Cool, I may consider this as an alternative to constant notebook writing and my laptop for my class notes and personal journal. It has none of the web browsers and apps that distract me, and it makes note taking easier as I'm a slow writer in general and my notes turn into chicken scratch if I have to keep up the professor's pace ; ;

If I was rich, I'd love to biy the typewriter style. I'm not a writer by any means, but my dad gave me his mom's green typewriter when I was in junior high, and I loved it. I typed a little faster than the typewriter could go, but it was a reminder of my Grandma. This is very neat looking, and I thi k you guys have an awesome idea! Ignore the complainers here in the comments, they care about gigantic screens and adding a bunch of crap to your idea. As a person who was raised with an AlphaSmart, I have nothing but high praises for these Typewriters. As a writer, I'm drooling and I can see myself concentrating easily on this. I want them in all the colors! But really expensive guys, I won't be able to afford and it'll be on the back of my list. I don't think I will ever make time for it... The prices are too frightening.

“I kind of worried that it would annoy people nearby.” ….your worry is 100 percent true. As someone who frequents coffeehouses, Smart Typewriters are annoying AF in public (own a Gen3 myself) but they’re a godsend on a nice empty table. It’s super pretentious to bring in a 4lb device that’s clicky but fortunately their Travelers are nice and quiet (and fortunately, Pomera has their incredible DM30 and DM250 for the coffeehouse writers). Great review regardless and much appreciated. I agree, happy that they’re seemingly successful. Their three devices (Smart Typewriter, Alpha, Traveler) all have different best use cases and all seem to occupy a useful role depending on the type of writer you are. Great products and have always had success with their customer service, for sure. Aside: Well done on the 2nd novel. Great to hear success stories.

Whyyyyy do they make the screen so small on all these? Even a typewriter lets you read the whole page at once
@getfreewrite3 ай бұрын
Freewrite is a dedicated drafting device intentionally designed to reduce distractions, separate the drafting process from the editing process, and help writers reach that flow state. For that reason, the screen isn't designed for lengthy reading, editing, or reviewing, but instead, focus. Users can choose from three different font sizes to customize readability. Once a draft is ready for editing, it's already available in the cloud to be easily transferred to your preferred software for editing!
@coolakin3 ай бұрын
@@getfreewrite thats a good answer and makes sense but I still would prefer a larger screen. Modern devices have small bezels and the extremely large bezels on these devices makes them instantly feel out of date and old to me.

Hi there! Nothing cheeky about it. The name "Alpha" is an homage to the AlphaSmart, whose creators we've spoken with. They respect the work we're doing and we're proud to bring distraction-free drafting to a new generation!
@austinhackney39063 ай бұрын
@@getfreewrite Thanks for that information. My Neo2 cost 20 bucks and works great. I just can't convince myself that this offers an additional 360 bucks of value. Plus picking up an old Neo is more eco-friendly than getting a new gadget you don't need. Most of these will gather dust. What writers need are passion and discipline. And you can't buy those in a plastic box. Although your marketing people might persuade a lot of naïve aspirants that they can. I really think the entire Astrohaus project is all icing and no cake. Sorry!

You're entitled to your opinion. But our community of prolific writers proves otherwise. 😊 You can find just a few of the published works created with Freewrite here: getfreewrite.com/pages/written-on-freewrite
@austinhackney39063 ай бұрын
@@getfreewrite No, that is disingenuous marketing. All these writers were prolific and successful long before they got their freewrites. And they would have been if all they had was a chalk and slate to write on. It's definitely a toy that writers who have already learned their craft and developed their discipline (and can afford the exaggerated pricing without missing a beat) can enjoy. But it's wrong to suggest that this device will make bad writers better. And the distraction-free thing is nonsense. An undiscplined writer who has a freewrite can just as easily check social media on their phone or realize they must clean the bathroom or whatever in the same way as all aspirants always have. It would be interesting to see how many owners of these products are still sitting on unfinished work or can't remember where their freewrite is. I have no doubt that the percentage is significantly higher than this handful of already successful writers with money to spare and a thing about clicky keyboards. My point is this keyboard will not solve the distraction problem for anyone incapable of solving it anyway and any suggestion otherwise is, let's be polite, misleading. The emperor has no clothes.
@austinhackney39063 ай бұрын
@@getfreewrite All these writers were already successful and prolific before they owned Freewrite products. To suggest that they are successful because of the Freewrite (and by implication that non-successful writers will become successful if they buy Freewrite products) is disingenuous marketing. As you perfectly well know, these handful of authors who were already successful enough to be able to afford a "new toy" with a clicky keyboard are not representative of most aspiring or active writers who buy the products. And the "distraction free" writing thing is nonsense. Any writer who has not yet learned discipline and developed a consistent writing practice can just as easily look away from a Freewrite to pootle about on their phone or suddenly realize the urgency of cleaning the bathroom as any other novice with any other device. I'm sorry, really I am, but the Emperor has no clothes. Why not market these devices honestly as well-crafted typing machines for successful writers who like that sort of thing to play with?
