Great videos. I'm planning to head through that way next year. Not sure if this is behind the 8 ball, I know you rotated your handlebars to improve your fit, i also note your stem is pointing down, if you take the stem off (have to take your handlebars off as well) and rotate it 180 degrees, you will also gain height. With a 5mm allen key and a bit of work re wrapping your bars, you can move the controls toward you as well, result in in a closer position, and then the drops can be rotated back to a useful position. Having said all that, you may have had a bike fit since this video. :)

Cool video. Thanks for sharing. 11:29 We cycled Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in July and August. Loved Almaty and the quiet roads we found. But it looks as if the motorways are doable too. Happy travels Kurt and Darina

Hi Kurt and Darina. It's great to hear that you had the chance to cycle Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan , as they are amazing places to experience on a bike 😀 The highways were pretty quiet and they felt safe to cycle 🙂 I would have loved to see more of Kyrgyzstan, so maybe I'll go back and explore the Pamirs in the future 🙂 take care of yourselves!

Oh it was pretty mind blowing to have spent three days in barren landscapes to be surrounded by people and highrises, such a contrast and it even made the landscapes look entirely different. Hahaha 🤣 it took me a long time to get my bearings with the time zone, as the sun didn't rise until 10am and set until 9pm 🤣 When I cross into Vietnam, I go back an hour after cycling 3400 miles 🤔

Hi Jacob, I'll keep an eye on your route. I'll be starting a Singapore - UK ride December or January. Maybe we'll cross paths. Noticed you've a Trek 520. I had the same older model. Brings back memories of some of my rides. You may want to consider lower gearing for future serious climbs. 22 front and/or 40 would work with your long cage derailleur. Also, a mirror is always a must on my bike set-up. Ride safe. May the winds be with you!

I also have genuinely considered getting a mirror for piece of mind to what's coming up behind me! Take care buddy and best of luck with the final prep for your trip. @Geocycling1993
@Geocycling1993 Ай бұрын
Oh definitely! There are alternatives in Turkey and in hindsight, if I had known the coast was going to be so unpleasant, I would have cycled central Turkey. Central Turkey contains much higher and tougher climbs and has some pretty scary dogs which I have a fear of, which pushed me towards deciding to do the coast. But, like I said, I would fully advise anyone to take the more central route for a safer and more enjoyable experience. No one cycling the northern coast seemed to be having fun haha! Thank you 🙂

Just a quick question. Do you really have to follow the highways that often when bicycling in Turkey? No backroads or gravel/dirt-roads?
@Geocycling1993
@Geocycling1993 Ай бұрын
If you go further inland, then there are alternatives to the busy roads. However, from what I heard it can be tough on these roads as they are often gravel roads and can be steep. Being such a mountainous country, you would have to give yourself a good amount of time to pass through on the slower roads 🙂 Everyone I met who did the coast like I did had a pretty rough time, however, people who went inland said it was tough, but relatively enjoyable and very scenic 🙂 However, it's practically impossible to completely escape the busy roads all of the time. Istanbul is one example and on many occasions there are no alternatives. Personally, if I was to go back in time I would have gone inland and taken the time penalty. I would have never done that coast again haha.

Thank you 🙂 Komoot is a very good utility to use, however it is always good to double check your routes as it can put you on terrain that is not great or route you up a hill you didn't have to climb or sometimes busy roads. Just check the road surface data it gives and set your route planning to cycle touring and it should be ok 🙂

I understand that you are focussed on the journey but if you have time, it would be great to see this and your thoughts on how your gear met your expectations? Hello 🙂 Ah I'm really happy you enjoyed watching my videos 😀 I haven't done a gear list yet and that's a really good idea! My plan is to do some advice videos in the coming months when I get to more populated parts of China and South East Asia, where I can shorten my distances some days and where I plan to have time off! So I'll do a gear list video and go over my kit then 🙂 Mostly I have used esims as I have travelled through convenience, rather than physical ones as I only have one sim slot and often get verification codes from the bank to my UK SIM. I had to buy a physical SIM in China to use most of their services though! Thank you, the Pamir highway was definitely an interesting stretch 🙂 I hope you have a great day!!
