A major detail that i love in that movie is at the very end where Summer describes how she met her husband, and she said 'Tom was right'. Showing how Tom changed her perspective a bit just like how she changed him. From her perspective, Tom is the manic pixie dream girl. I love how you can tell there are two completely different stories happening at the same time, but you only see Tom's perspective. Summer still existed even when she was off the screen.

this the most underrated comment i ever seen💯 its true we never really see her off screen so a lot of her perspective , inner monologue, motivations/intentions etc is missing. but she tried her best to convey that she is scared of opening up and getting hurt and shed rather just have fun no strings attached and she did her best to be upfront about it and literally everyone is responsible for their OWN actions and decisions including tom and its not her fault he was a bit delusional and not wanting to see things for exactly what they were. both of the characters had a lot of growth but we dont really know much about summer so we dont see all the struggles she also faced. and so its a lot of butthurt incel losers who watch this and think shes an awful person because the movie only showed one perspective. and its really just very representative of life. because u wont always know. people wont tell u every thought inside their head. but i dont think its a healthy thing to assume someone had ill intent or was a pos or "only wanted attention" or whatever. people are so complex and multidimensional. some people cant handle that theyre not in control of how someone else chooses to live their life. because theyre not yet in control of theirs, taking accountability for their choices, and still in a victim mindset screaming to the hills that everyone else is the problem. this movie wasnt as toxic as people would have acted in real life, reason for that is because its an opportunity for the viewer to also grow as a person while watching. thats why i love this movie. summer was someone who was in full control of herself and her actions, she knew what she wanted and didnt want, and also had the heart to not be a decptive asshole despite the fact SOME people will still perceive her as such. she told tom what it was from the start. he is responsible for himself and where he chooses to steer the ship of his life.

The hard part isn’t that someone doesn’t like you and just flat out rejects you. That part gets over fast. Hard part is when someone isn’t compatible with you but also attracted to you to the point they won’t reject you or commit to you, they would go along with the feelings you have for them for a long time because they sincerely do like you, but eventually end up with someone they are compatible with and break your heart.

Exactly. The cruelest way you can act is treat someone like a buffet. Taking whatever is convenient and pretending it's their fault the rest is left to rot on the table, because they shouldn't have displayed something you did not want. Summer should have dumped Tom. Honesty is not enough. You need to be accountable for what your actions cause. Even if you don't intend it. If you're able to see the pain happening in consequence of your choices, it's your mess.

It happened to me. Used to be in a romantic relationship with a woman, and that woman told me "she doesnt look for a serious relationship" we had sex and did all it requires to be in a serious relationship. I thought i can change her thinking by doing many romantic things to her like picking her up from work, buying flowers, romantic dinners , vacations after vacations and all, after 8 months she still doesn't want it and i left the country to forget her. @@charlestoncabasal348 Tom is the one with more issues. True. He idealized her the same way that Gatsby idealized Daisy in The Great Gatsby. She is her own person with her own set of issues. Not the fantasy Tom imagined in his head. But while she did warn Tom she also knew how he was. She could have made it clearer or broken it off. But she didn't. She kept the relationship going knowing that he was falling harder for her. Knowing that he was probably going to get hurt if/when they broke it off. She knew. Now that's not to say that Tom is the victim in this. JGL said it himself that Tom isn't someone that should be emulated. But like Summer, he is someone with a set of issues. Neither of them are them are truly innocent in this. One can be supposedly more at fault than the other, but BOTH share blame. Regardless, they both are very flawed characters that made an interesting story.

i love that the end shows there is hope for tom. he's more assured in his life. he's chasing his dreams. he's not "waiting" for love to inspire him. he also asks autumn out right then and there without completely overthinking it. he's giving himself another chance at love and he's learned and matured from last time. the whole point is that he doesn't give up, that's why the numbers restart bc it's a new season, new beginning.

@@RainyDayWolf No, some things are explicitly "relationship" type stuff. Notice in the movie they go on alot of public dates, spend alot of their free time together, are accountable for each others time. At some point you arent FWBs, youre actually dating and just in an "open relationship". In this movie, I agree the guy is clingy and has a warped view of Summer, but she 100% failed to establish boundaries, which then led him to falling in love. It was mean and cruel on her part. And guys do that all the time to girls. Im saying that whoever does it, is an a-hole. They lead somebody on thinking they are interested in a relationship, even sleeping with them. But then hit them with the "oh, we were just talking, I dont view you as a BF/GF" when the other person clearly does.

Honestly you nailed it here, you’re so right. The first time I watched this film, as a young teenager, I hated Summer because I was convinced that they were perfect together. The second time, I hated Tom, because I saw myself in him-pining for the idea of someone, but never truly seeing them through the rose-tinted glasses. I’m ready for a third rewatch, and now I’ve moved on from yearning for someone that never loved me, truly moved on, after years I mean, I wonder what lense I’ll see the film through. What an amazing film, that even years later we’re still analysing it and applying the whole idealisms of love with our own, messy experiences so much.

Essentially, the movie's message is that love is going to go through some rough patches, and not everyone is going to be "the one", but that should not deter a person but rather encourage them to keep trying to find the one for them.

I think deep in Summer's heart she wanted to find love, but Tom wasn't "the one". Explains how she got married in appx 3 months after she broke it off with Tom, because the new guy was her "One". I also think Summer has either dismissive-avoidant or fearful-avoidant attachment style and that explains why she doesn't believe in "love"; due to her traumatic past of her parents' bad marriage and separation she feels like love doesn't exist and marriage only ends up in disappointment and hurt feelings. But avoidants, deep in their hearts, are human too and need love --- they just don't know how to seek for it in a sense normal people do, and their distancing mechanisms kick in (ie. saying upfront they're only looking for casual, no strings attached, etc so no one gets attached and hurt) because they believe their needs would only be met with disappointment. Summer's now husband must have loved her in a way where she didn't feel smothered and also able to feel secure, where as Summer wasn't sure of Tom's love because Tom's love was pretty selfish - He was in love with the idea of being in love, not actually Summer. I have an avoidant attachment style too so I really empathized with Summer - her only fault was I think she was confused too and gave Tom too much hope and what she said (we're casual) vs what she was doing (her actions were definitely more than "casual" in some areas). Now I'm just wondering how the heck did Summer find someone who helped her overcome her attachment style in 3 months... this is the only part of the movie I don't understand lmao

I think it's supposed to be left at Tom was right, he just wasn't right about Summer. Real relationships take work and commitment, but they can't be forced, and when she finally met her one it was mostly natural. I know someone similar and she said she never saw it coming. He was loving and kind, but he also called her out when she was avoidant or tried to create conflict unnecessarily. He was a good partner to her rather than someone just trying to make her into some ideal he saw. It's definitely unclear if Tom's outlook truly changed by the end, but I think they both learned valuable lessons.

I wasn’t quite sure what it was about, but I was hoping it was some stupid romantic comedy to get over my heart being ripped out of my chest and stomped on from a recent breakup. Right. I literally saw my relationship on that screen, and I had a nice, quiet cry during Tom and Summer’s final scene on the bench. That scene actually provided the closure I needed from my own failed relationship. I had never experienced a movie impacting me so deeply and personally before. If you truly love someone, you should respect them as a person, and in doing so, be prepared for and accepting of the unexpected incompatibility that may emerge. Many people fall into the trap of loving the idea of someone instead of the true person they know. You may see certain qualities that you admire, and you alter the rest of their personality in your mind to fit what would make for a perfect partner. Due to the moments of seemingly pure bliss, you believe that you can change them with time to fit your mind's construction. I think what makes life beautiful is that you cannot truly change anyone to whom you are attracted, but instead have to search for someone who is already compatible, as then it leads to amazing cases in which both parties find what they have been looking for. To anyone reading this who is feeling heartbroken, lost, or confused, I hope you find what you are searching for without losing respect for the wishes of others. I love you all.

I've been in both Summers and Toms shoes. Last summer I met a guy who was a huge romantic and he started treating me like his girlfriend right away, putting everything else aside and wanting to see a future with me although we hardly knew each other. I tried telling him several times i'm not looking for a relationship right now and he said it's fine pretty much but kept pushing. Funny thing is I actually did like him but he was too pushy and I didn't even have time for a relationship and he refused to give it time because he said literally nothing can get in the way for love without respecting everything that was keeping me occupied which at the time was mostly school and I was studying for some very important tests coming up soon. I've also dated guys whom i've ended up romanticizing from very early on and gotten really hurt when they didn't want a relationship. I think nearly everyone has experienced both sides of this but in this story I still see Summer as having done nothing wrong because she was honest, Tom wouldn't listen. It's natural to stay with someone anyway and hope they'll change their mind but it's not realistic to expect them to do so just because you have fun together and have things in common. You also have to look at the other person and look deeper than your fantasy-version of them. Things in common are great but a relationship needs a ton of other things more.

How exactly is that proof that he is still romanticizing women? I could easily interpret his expression at the end as hopefulness. Tom is a romantic, there isn't anything inherently wrong with that. After Summer, he is despondent and seemingly apathetic when it comes to the idea of love. When he meets Autumn, she is receptive in a way Summer never was. She actually seems interested. This is made clear by her mentioning seeing Tom at the park and teasing him for not noticing her. She also changes her plans to get coffee with him. Wouldn't you be elated if for once, someone shows the same degree of interest as you? The relationship with Summer was never equal, it was on her terms and based on how she felt at any given moment. Personally I think Tom grows significantly from the experience. Could he still make bad relationship decisions, sure? That's just being a human.

Movie hit me like a train bound for "reality check" station. The movie was released in 2009, I was only 6 back then. Haven't watched it until yesterday night, I'm 19 as of typing this out. Don't know why I had felt the impulse to watch the movie. I think a comment on Instagram mentioned the title of the movie a scene was taken from in one of the shorts. Recently, I fell in love, or say, infatuated with a girl I had only met in college. She was the first to approach me and engaged in convos. She even greeted me everytime we pass by each other. I never thought of anything at first, but as weeks go by, something started to slowly grow inside me, it was a liking for her, and it was the first time I had felt like this towards a girl. I reciprocated, assuming she perhaps might like me, by taking the initiative to start convos, check on her in the library and buying her chocolate for her birthday. I even helped sell off all of her cookies during a sale she was involved with, which I bought 5 packs of. Later on, I felt like she kinda distanced herself from me. I don't exactly know when was the onset, but I felt it slowly getting noticeable. She doesn't come up to my table in the library like she used to. Conversations felt like I was the one carrying it the whole time. Pretty much kinda showed obvious signs that she wasn't as interested as before in having me around. Long story short, last November, before the end of the semester dinner, I confessed to her. This was somewhat her response : "I had known you liked me, but I think you should move on. You can keep on liking me, I don't mind. But I don't feel the same way to you. I don't mind if you want to keep on liking me, but I think you should move on" I choked on my breath. Not knowing what to say, I just said : "Oh I see. Thanks a lot for being sincere and straightforward with me. I really appreciate it. I guess, see you during the dinner tonight" Later that night, I avoided her, I just couldn't bring myself to look in her way. There was always a huge weight that stops me from looking at her that night. Right after the dinner, semester break commenced. I'd reckoned I can recuperate my feelings and my mental state, since I won't have to cross paths with her for a month. But here I am, just finished watching this movie and having to face a deluge of emotions tearing down the walls of my mind, dragging me back to the vortex of emotions I had once thought to be gone. I got dragged back to a viscous cycle of my mind saying things like : "you two may be together in the end" "she might change her mind" And all sorts of things that would convince me to still have hope, knowing enough that I would just end up tormenting myself further by holding on to it. This movie couldn't be anymore resonant to what I had just recently gone through. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that I had watched the movie right after a tumultuous ordeal. But that coincidence is uncanny and somewhat ridiculous for me to see it as sheer coincidence. The ending of the movie was the true definition of bittersweet. I felt the bitterness and the underlying sweetness in the final scene. Ripped my heart into a million pieces but at the same time draped my heart with a heartfelt sensation. And I keep on wondering what the future has in store for me ?

I love the way you argue. It combines the things I love about science writing and melds those over the problems I have with humanities writing, at least on a college level. Your method is very satisfying to me, and I’ll explain why with several points. Normally I wouldn’t make a post this long, but you seem like you’d appreciate the unpacking of it, and this is the best way I know how to tell you that I love your videos: explaining why. I’m a graduate student in Math and Computer Science, so most of the papers I write are very proof and logic oriented. I make assumptions, explain those assumptions, apply logic and experiments to show how those assumptions derive new facts, and make conclusions based on the applicability of the approach. I like it because I don’t have to be flowery, and I get to lay out what I’ve learned in an understandable manner, and nobody judges my work based on the persuasive nature of it. I don’t have to try to come up with something new, I don’t have to pretend to understand the nature of people, and I don’t have to watch where I step to avoid peoples’ biases and cultural differences. The downside to scientific writing is that you often lose some of the wonder and power that comes from getting people to rethink what they might have already thought to be true. My paper about how an old algorithm applies to a new problem isn’t going to get people to change their hearts or develop an understanding or appreciation for a topic they previously felt ambivalent about. The problem I have with all of the times I’ve had to write for that effect in humanities classes is that the professors seem to appreciate the use of emotionally charged phrasing and carefully chosen examples to manipulate the perception of the audience. I may fully agree with what I’m saying when I write for humanities classes, but often times I feel like I’m trying to manipulate my audience instead of sparking discussion, mostly because the professors want persuasion and hot theses. Your videos are everything I love about STEM writing with the subject matter and effect of humanities writing. You take calm, non-biased looks at the subject matter you love, and you tell me the cool things you’ve noticed about it. You’re not trying to argue that 500 days of summer is pushing an agenda, and you’re not trying to say that you understand the movie and it’s purpose in sociological commentary, you’re telling us, in a well put together logical structure, what you found in it that was so interesting. Because you approach the argument from a very neutral stance where you’re just trying to learn, it makes me extremely receptive of what you have to say, and your high logical capability allows me to easily follow along. Many times in humanities research, I have many “yeah but that’s not always true” thoughts because they try to apply their arguments to as broad a scale as possible. You, on the other hand, look at media for what it is and try to find the beauty in it through logical analysis, and I appreciate it so much. I hardly ever leave without learning something profound or coming to a new appreciation of a topic, and I believe that’s your goal. I never thought someone would be able to do that with media critique, and I’m very glad you proved me wrong. I love your content, and it’s my belief that you are criminally underrated. You deserve millions of subscribers. As long as you continue to make content the way you are now, I will be a strong supporter. I have a feeling Summer got married to someone that might have been in her previous life. The way she talks about her past seems sort of mysterious and vague. I think she was either not telling the whole story, or made some stuff up. Why else would she get married to someone she just met? At least that's my personal theory anyways. We only see Tom's perspective, so we don't really know who Summer is. He thinks he knows who Summer is, but he really doesn't because he keeps pushing ideals and expectations that are not her. I just feel like Summer had a lot of personal baggage that Tom wasn't capable of alleviating. No one was really in the wrong here, it just is what it is.

I think people demonize Tom for being a romantic and not a cynic, which is what nowadays is the fetish of relationships. He/she who is the cynic is the one with the power to leave at any time and the one who gets attached faster is the pathetic clingy sad person we make fun of when that relationship ends. But in reality, Tom's devotion towards Summer shows he's capable of deep emotion and vulnerability and he's not afraid of love. I think the problem with him was that he was so desperate to feel that love that he focused it on the wrong person by idealizing her as the "love of his life" when in reality she wasn't. I can totally connect way more to Tom because I recognize myself in him and the way I treated former relationships. But I agree with you that this "Tom is the one in the wrong and we should all pin the blame on him" is really annoying. I think people just hate seeing themselves in Tom because as cynical as they might be, we've all gone through a phase of our lives in which this was us.

Here's the thing though, and its a strong problem in modern day dating. Both people agreeing it wont get serious, yet do all the serious things a growing relationship would do, giving one, or both, the idea that it's more than what they felt it would be 1 - 2 - 3 months before. This is why more people hate Summer over Tom, as Tom genuinely wants something real, where as she is happy to jump from man to man because and I quote ''wants to''. Something that's reflected in society more now, than it did on the films release.

Exactly. I think actions are really the only thing that defines a relationship at the end of they day. People just use the 'casual' label because they want all the good aspects of being in a serious romantic relationship and none of the responsibility. It's extremely toxic because in real life you can't just "do what ever you want" without consequence and live as a child forever. Tom was right when he said they were a couple, because she did enforce that with her actions, no matter what label she wanted to avoid. I’ve had a “summer” once. you tell someone you’re intentions at the beginning and if they agree that’s on them. but she knowingly did things bc she felt like it regardless of how thomas felt. he openly expressed how he no longer wanted what she did. and yet she wouldn’t cut things off completely for a while. when she finally did, she invited him to a party. which everyone now can assume was an engagement party maybe. without even mentioning it. she enjoyed is company and attention knowing he was freshly heartbroken. she knew he fell. we’re all adults here and you don’t have to care about another’s feelings or shit they did to themselves. but she was inconsiderate of him. constantly. he thought was most would, if i’m right for her. she’ll change her mind. and he desperately wanted to be that person. she was just a wall. she cared then didn’t. gave him some of what he was begging for then would stop. she knew what she wanted but would wish wash back n forth instead of staying completely true to what she said in the beginning. is it hard to stop a relationship cold turkey for the others benefit if you clearly see they’re in too deep? she was mature but not. a mature person would take the loss of that friendship bc it was for the best of that person. she would do the right thing then go back on it later. bc she could. that’s why the line at the end about her not mentioning her engagement was there. she DOES do what she wants. and she always did. and that’s her flaw.

Just sounds like such a childish immature move to distance from the things you claim to love but when actions don't align its just that. I could never cut and run from people I truly love and I guess that's what makes some of us different. Someone can love you and lie straight to you just because like some comments above said.. She saw he was a great catch, but feelings are feelings. Just super dismissive and realistically avoidant for the fact you know the other would do anything for you. And its like when people have that.. You just aren't good enough. Come as you are and hope for the best is what I've learned. Most aren't here like they say they are so always keep yourself situated. Self love above all.
@Jaerb4

Great video. I think Summer's motivations actually change during the movie (and Tom's probably don't.) She was upfront that she wanted something casual and he agreed to it. But when they become a couple, after the fight, it's her trying to accommodate him and testing out if she does actually want a relationship. I've seen people paint it as her taking advantage of him, but that's not her intention at all. It's at that point she becomes more of a romantic herself, and she wants to give it a shot with him. That may even be where she learned she wanted one, which prepared her for her next relationship and marriage. At that point, it's not that she still wanted something casual. It's that she wanted something serious but in the end Tom just wasn't the right guy. And given Tom (like many of us) shies away from direct confrontation and is often very passive aggressive, he probably would've taken their failing relationship to the grave had she not broken it off. On the bench when he says, "you just do what you want", he means it like an indictment. She says, "yes" as a positive affirmation. And quite frankly, I think her outlook is right. If you want something, go for it. If you don't want something, say it. Tom has incredible difficulty doing this. I think it also plays into why he couldn't ask her out, and she had to take the first step (and why this is a fantasy for so many guys.) The "nice guy" archetype (who often ends up not being so nice, but that's a different discussion) won't express their real feelings or desires, which leads to miscommunication, misinterpreting things and eventual heartbreak, which fuels a victim complex even more. Learn to be honest and direct. Make sure you're on the same page. And once you do that, you won't feel so slighted when something unfortunate happens. You begin to realize sometimes shit does just happen and it's not because someone was taking advantage of you. My last relationship ended in June. It sucked. It hurts. But it wasn't intentional or malicious. We both knew what we wanted, and it turned out that wasn't it.

I've never fallen in love, not for real, a genuine love. And every time I've been with some girl, I've always known deep down "this won't go anywhere". I mean I'm a romantic like he is, but how can I know love if I've never felt it. So even though I hated her character so much when she said "Cause I wanted to", I fully understand her in the line: "What I was never sure of with you." I think perhaps those 2 lines explain it all. A person can be romantic and also become a cynic, I mean perhaps she too wanted to feel love, but didn't believe in it. She didn't believe in it, she had never felt it and she thought she didn't want it, but wasn't sure. Until she randomly found the right person, and unfortunately for Tom is wasn't him. So me being a romantic, knowing I've never fallen in love and that I might never find the right person, every time a new girl appears I keep having that cynical thought in the back of my head "this most likely won't go anywhere." "Just because a cute girl likes the same bizarre crap as you doesn't makes her your soulmate." But for reasons, I sometimes just go along with it, and we start going out *'cause I still want to try*, even though *I'm never sure of love with that person*. No matter how romantic I can be, it'll always come in conflict with my cynicism. So when I watch this film I kinda understand both sides: wanting love, and not believing in love. You can want love so much, it won't make a person love you back; and even if you don't believe in it, out of nowhere randomly you could just find it.
