Cold Chisel destroyed every venue they played in...Nobody left unhappy, every venue was proud to say they hosted the great Cold Chisel. The Aussie 80's Pub & Venue scene was about shaking the venue to its foundations and pumping up everyone. Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes are Australian Music National Treasures. Great work guys on bringing these timeless bangers to the rest of the world 👍 Music is meant to be shared!

Okay Gents, I'm absolutely happy you put on this band I had never heard before!!! Fantastic. It was much like if you took 80's Rolling Stones, and AC/DC, mix in a touch of Sex Pistols but still uniquely their own selves and you're listening to this band!!! And it's great!!! 😁❤✌

I was there during the golden age of Aussie Rock 1976-1989. During that period there was massive competition between rock bands from all parts of Oz which drove the quality up higher and higher. There were Sydney bands, Melbourne bands, Brisbane bands, Adelaide bands etc .. all competing in this new genre. They didn't need to tour overseas because they could all tour Australia and New Zealand to sell out venues because of the big clubs supporting them.

@@markphillips3186sorry, but 2 to 3 hours? Nope, I was a roadie for many years, the only time I saw a band play longer than the 90 minute set plus encore, was when the band was hired to play support and then the backing band for an overseas artist, Phil Manning Band comes to mind, they supported then backed up Bo Diddly in 82 or early 83, he used a band called The Rats when he was in Sydney from memory. Maybe 3 hours if you did a double, then on triple banger Saturday's, up to 4 and a half hours playing three venues, one afternoon, then an evening gig, followed by an early morning gig at a club with a 3am licence, or the second gig could be an early support, then onto the gig that the band is headlining.

He doesn't use his vocal cords. I heard him interviewed about when he ended up in hospital and could not speak, but found that he could still sing in full voice. They stuck a camera down his throat and found out he was using his throat and the muscles around his throat to create the sound. They and him were blown away. Since this discovery he has learnt to sing with his actual vocal cords . I believe this is also when he sobered up.
@Dr_KAP
@Dr_KAP 9 ай бұрын
🤣 not quite. Medically speaking your explanation makes little sense. He absolutely does use his vocal cords- if he didn’t you wouldn’t be able to hear him. Jimmy makes use of his false cords to create that growl in his voice - this is a technique used in soul singing and is also used by Josh Teskey for example and other singers with this style. You don’t use one or the other, we all use both in combination. If you clear your throat you’ll discover your false cords.

According to Jimmy on an interview when he was asked how he can sing like that without losing his voice. He said that his doctor told him that when he talks he uses his vocal cords but when he sings he users his false vocal cords.
@Dr_KAP
@Dr_KAP 2 жыл бұрын
Yeh.. What actually happens is by learning to retract his false vocal chords he allows his true vocal chords to vibrate freely - only the true vocal chords produce sound. If you laugh silently you’re retracting false vocal chords. Practising this often you can learn how to safely belt out songs without damaging your true vocal chords!

I heard an interview with Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes. Apparently what this song's about was the band went to The States to meet some big time producer who was going to help them make it in America however he kept them waiting for 4 hours while he attended a birthday party for his dog. So they told him where to go and flew back home.

@The Thamesmen hi guys another great reaction. On the subject of the stage invader, on that tour at the Adelaide gig, I attended a friend who was at the concert had one of their party be th one that got up on stage. They were told to get up there as they were standing/seated next to Jimmy's wife, Jane, and she pushed them to get up on stage. So, it was somewhat staged, so to speak. Also, Alex and Andy are great reactors, too.

Jimmy Barnes knew Bon Scott personally and even played in a band that Bon had played in after Bon left (see ‘Fraternity’). It is reasonable to assume that Bon was influential to a young Jimmy but Brian was in another country entirely and did not join ACCA DACCA until 1980. Cold Chisel was up and running in 1973- some seven years before anyone in Australia had even heard of Brian Johnson. Barnes openly says his influences were the likes of Deep Purple, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Billy Thorpe, Johnny O’Keefe… even Tina Turner. He says young him wanted to scream like a Banshee, so loud, that he offended all the parents. Interestingly, Thamesmen, you’re spot on with the Rolling Stones influence because Mark Opitz who produced this song said, "Musically, 'You Got Nothing I Want' was inspired by the Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up'. The Stones Tattoo You was Australia's number one album when we entered the studio and Mossy would tune up by playing the riff. I'm sure if you put the start of 'Start Me Up' at the start of 'You Got Nothing I Want' it would work perfectly”.

That’s the explosive lead-in track off their fantastic Circus Animals. The next track on the album? Bow River. If that wasn’t enough, then you get the superb Forever Now, written by their drummer Steve Prestwich. Plenty of other excellent stuff on there, including the highly popular When The War Is Over, written by their secret weapon, keyboardist Don Walker, and utilising both Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes vocal talents, same as Bow River and countless other awesome Chisel songs.

I am pleasantly surprised that this is just a bonus track to try and corrupt some other perfectly food reactors with some Aussie "tape noise". Thanks for playing this and I really do look forward to the next Aussie Week. I feel sorry for Chris though, it must be hard to narrow the plethora of awesome Aussie songs from the Pub Rock era down to just a third set of five songs. Wife Beater shirts is an American term. We call them singlets. Blue Singlets are worn by sheep shearers as an almost uniform. Back in the late 1800's a shearer named Jackie Howe (who had both the world records for shearing the most sheep in 8 hours using blades (hand shears like big scissors) and mechanical shears) added some patches to a blue singlet to help protect the shearer from grass seeds and burrs which are sharp and stick in your skin. The modified singlets are called "Jackie Howes" and are still worn by shearers today. So it became a bit of an icon and civilians in Australia wear singlets of any colour as typical outdoor attire, be it at the beach, a backyard BBQ or generally just being outside. Wife Beater never comes into the equation, that's a fucked up Yankie saying.

So glad your love our cement mixer vocalist Jimmy. His brother John Swan (Swanee) is like him also but a bit more cultured. The other English equivalent would be the lead singer from Slade - Noddy Holder (his range is narrower) and it sounds like he garlged some listerine.

Aussies shorten words with an 'o' or an 'ie' depending on whoever invented a particular short form. It's an unofficial national past-time 😅 You Got Nothing I Want is a cracking song.
