My mum used to buy me a bag of chips once a year, but there were like a dozen chips in there... it made me super sad) I'm willing to bet that in the future, there will come a company that will use the idea of "no air-filled bags!" to advertise their product and they will then earn far more money than any other company that was cheaping out on things.

Charlie is about to revolutionise the entire beef jerky industry by putting 100g more beef in each pack when compared to existing brands of beef jerky. The top brands will try and ignore the new Penguin Beef brand, but sales will dwindle and Penguin Beef stocks will rise in value every day until they can ignore Charlie's beef no longer. They will make press releases detailing their mistakes and plans to up the amount of beef in each pack. But by then it will be too late, and Penguin Beef will be well on the way to becoming the no.1 dried beef snack in the USA.
@needlepoints4 жыл бұрын
@@superchickenlips1 it's more about weight than anything. In making jerky you lose moisture, weight, and that's most of its cost. Weight is the enemy. You could sell higher moisture jerky like slim jim with relatively low loss in weight to flavour value or sell low moisture jerky with a longer shelf life and higher flavour value at a higher cost due to its lighter weight. Jerky is a balancing act and it's significantly more difficult than a smoked meat. Anyone who portrays jerky as a smoked meat is a fool. It's a dried meat and smoking is a different beast altogether.

I will say, I watched my parents run a little side business making jerky and it's more pricey to produce than you might imagine, especially if meat prices are out of control like during the pandemic. If you're going store bought though, at least get it at some place like Costco where it's much more reasonably portioned to the bag price, especially for the non-beef varieties.

I always found the difference between meat and jerky prices to be astronomically high. You get something like 2x-4x the jerky per money if you make it yourself and it tastes better too. Associated costs don't seem make up for this difference. But I also mostly do my shopping for meats at the cheapest prices possible like Costco by default and never considered the more pricy options that some people are forced with. Red meats have gone up in price by crazy amounts. So I've been out of the jerky game for a few years now partially due to that.
@ryandyar12482 жыл бұрын
A large part of meat’s weight comes from water/hydration in the meat. So jerky makers buy the meat at market price by weight, then immediately remove a large portion of the weight that they paid for by drying it. So the makers have to charge seemingly higher prices to make up for the money lost by dehydration. Add to that, good quality jerky is not a quick and easy process. I’m stilled bummed by the price of jerky, but I definitely understand it.

I’ve been saying this about jerky since I was a teenager in 2010… so to hear someone say ‘your exposing big jerky right now’ In 2022 Kinda blows my mind … they charge that much because people PAY that much. If people realized they were getting ripped off they’d stop buying & jerky companies would be forced to make a change either in price or quantity you get in each bag or both. You see I would agree with you but what I've noticed is the locally made better quality jerky that has way more in each pack is only like a dollar more and sometimes about the exact same price as Jack Link's for example. So they're clearly charging too much even with the meat prep and production cost. At least for the name brands. I can accept that it's a more pricey snack but realistically I think they could at least knock a dollar off of the price and still be really profitable.

Because of the necessary low fat and moisture content, jerky is high in protein. A 30 g (about 1 oz) portion of lean meat, for example, contains about 7 g of protein. By removing 15 g of water from the meat, the protein ratio is doubled to nearly 15 g of protein per 30 g portion. In some low moisture varieties, a 30 g serving will contain 21 g of protein, and only one g of fat. The price per unit weight of this type of jerky is higher than less-dried forms, as it takes 90 g of 99% lean meat to generate 30 g of jerky.

Beef dehydrates and weighs much less once “jerked”, as a result they probably are trying to get a higher return in prices due to this. That being said, for those who love jerky, try making your own. You can make it taste however you want and you can use an oven. Smoking is also something that is labor intensive and time consuming depending on your amounts (used to make deer jerky with apple wood) but also highly worth it. For those of you who love jack links jerky, Sam’s club will put it on sale for 12.99 for an entire pound. That requires a subscription, however.

Lets do some math :) jerky can be 1/3 the starting weight, a 3:1 ratio. So 2-3 pounds of beef will make 1 pound (16oz) of jerky 2.5oz of jerky per bag purchased (according to video) 2.5oz x 3 (3:1 ratio) = 7.5oz of fresh meat prior to dehydration. Type of meat used in Jerky: Top round and bottom round cattle beef. 1lbs of Top round locally is $6.50~ ... Looking at the model and numbers above ... 16oz (1 pound of meat) is the benchmark. so 7.5oz of fresh Top Round meat at $6.50/lbs = $2.133333 $2.133 / avg cost of bag ($7.50) means the company is making a 72% profit from each bag. Thats a very high margin

@roar falcon but you can get reasonably priced steak. Like, there's a place near me that sells a two pack of 8oz for $7/8. It ain't the best steak in the game, but it's not bad either.
@carterward14494 жыл бұрын
@@Chloe_557 it's not about making your own though, it's about how expensive it is to buy. And that is a perfect example of why it is an outrageous price for this lol. I can make a full pound of beef jerky after dehydrating for like $15 in Canada. They payed like 30 American for mabye 200 grams.
@jakelavaclaw27594 жыл бұрын
@@carterward1449 i mean jerky is still overpriced but you're not factoring in what companies pay to ship the jerky, pay for thousands of employees, factory upkeep, lots of variables
@americannacho3 жыл бұрын
"what is that in jerky terms?" "Six" 😂😂😂
@Nebulaxproduction4 жыл бұрын
The reason it's so expensive is because of the ratio of beef to Jerky. It takes 2.5 pounds of beef to make 1 pound of jerky. It still is very stupid because they keep a decent margin for profit

I may be wrong on this but I heard it takes like two weeks to smoke which I guess the price would make up for all the cost to keep it smoke 24/7
@ArchonCommando4 жыл бұрын
I dunno its pretty reasonable to me. The 75g pack jack lynx here was like 5.5 Euros. so thats like 5.5 Euros for 180g of beef. When filet costs 50 Euro a kilo - 5 Euro per 100gs thats really not that bad.
@OrbObserver4 жыл бұрын
@@ArchonCommando they're not using filet, and you're getting ripped off anyway.
@KrepsyK4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. When you're getting 40% of what you put in you'll have to multiply cost by an equal margin to break even. Add that number with the average 2-3x mark up and it starts to make sense. 1 lb of steak cuts is 5 dollars for some mid grade. That produces around 5 oz. The cheapest you would find for homemade jerky is 3-5 dollars per ounce.
@sakaraist4 жыл бұрын
@@KrepsyK I do it as a hobby, with ~60 lbs at a time, it's super easy to make in bulk and I don't even pay $5 CAD per pound. a company buying tens of thousands of pounds definitely wouldn't come close to that price. Up here in Alberta it's pretty easy to find home-made jerky (beef,elk,moose you name it) at less than $15-20 per kilo.
@hazmatxx Жыл бұрын
You gotta remember, this is meat without any of the water. If you took mcdonalds burgers and dehydrated them I think the price per weight would actually be similar.
