The fun of 2 strokes over just the smell and the tug at the heart strings from the ring-a-ding-ding is the way they produce power. 4 stroke is like turning on a tap. The power is pretty much linear the more you turn the throttle more the power increases. There is nothing like the power hit a 2 stroke delivers. It's like a light switch being turned on, all or nothing. What's not to love.
@simond52083 жыл бұрын
...but I can understand why anyone who came to biking later in life and didn't live/ride through the two stroke era would struggle to understand what is so great about a noisy tinny smelly smokey bike that needs a rebore every 10k miles. They'd probably prefer green bikes with gold wheels..... philistines! 😜

@@simond5208 Yes the old two-stroke era, I passed my test on a RD250, oh how I hated that bike, it burnt through pistons like they were butter. I used to carry a complete piston change in my rucksack for "emergencies". Bought a kettle after that, what a difference. Love the smell of a two-stroke.

@@simond5208 I found the small commuter 2 stroke machines. like the Suzuki GP 100 / 125 reliable as long as they were left bog standard .I have a neighbour still uses a 40 year old Suzi GP 125 daily runs like a Swiss watch .The trouble was a lot of idiots thought they knew better than the manufactures of the 2 strokes & used to make an unreliable dogs breakfast out of them by filing the ports & skimming the heads .

Yes, 2 strokes have the raw wow factor that 4 strokes albeit engineering marvels don't quite have. More a considered pleasure. And as well as 2 stroke twins/triples being great lightweight sports, for semi off roaders like trail bikes, 2 stroke singles were just great. And usually always far lighter than the 4 stroke equivs - honda xl especially. Had a Suzuki ts250ert myself that I took the bike test on. In suzuki's offroad livery of the day bright yellow and light blue stripes :-)

Hi TMF. for me the 2smoke was what i grew up on and i will always keep a special place for them in my heart. while i absolutely love all this modern machinery available to us i do miss the smell and sound of the 2smoke. I still ride off road and there is still a big presence on the dirt as they are cheaper to maintain and doing the work on them can be done by a person with a reasonable amount of mechanical knowledge. i feel much more confidant doing engine work on those than i do these 4strokes. great work, keep the videos coming

Two-strokes, I think, unless you lived (and maybe raced) them back in the day it's probably hard to understand. Hitting 10,500 revs on a TZ750 and hanging on for dear life (and pointing it in the right direction) is something you never forget. Not sure I'd want to do it at my age though?

For anyone who had there first taste of freedom on a 2 stroke it makes sense. I began riding at 10. My first road legal bike was yamaha rd50 black with red decals. Micron and race Reed. Went on to Rd 125 and you never had reliability but you never forget the smell and thrill of hitting the power band. I think those coming to biking later in life just don't get that.

The new Kawa 650, in green, is delightful. I rode the old z650, 4cylinders, and agree with you. That twin engine doesn't do it. Everything else is perfect. What a looker. I borrowed a friend's z650 in Italy, rode it on a dirt road next to a field that was being sprayed with water. I gunned the throttle to avoid getting too wet. The world became a whirling and very confusing place. I ended up on the other side of the wet patch on the road, with the bike facing perfectly in the direction from which I'd just come. Myself and bike fully intact. So, no comment to the proud owner. Bella macchina!

8:38 Zero FX under 300lb was the funnest bike I have ever ridden. They get a bad rap for range, but vast majority of commuters have a plug at both ends of their commute and don’t go more than 60 miles anyways so I don’t see what the range fuss is all about. Even the 250lb FXS with 3.6 battery will do 40 miles at dirt bike weight with liter bike torque.

I'm not even looking at petrol bikes anymore. I've got an older Honda Transalp which will probably last the rest of my riding life (I'm 58 now). The Transalp is reserved for long rides and tours. Recently I bought a Surron Storm Bee in Mongolia, where I live. It's the big brother of the Surron Light Bee. It'll do 100km on a charge and since it's an enduro/dual purpose, that's more than enough range for the off-road riding I generally do. If I want to take it further, it can go in the back of my 4WD truck, for example on a holiday. It will fully charge in 2-3 hours. I even plan to get a diesel generator for general purpose use but it would also allow me to charge my Surron in remote locations. It only weighs 130kg which is bit chunky for an enduro but not bad for a street legal dual-purpose bike. Similar weight to a Yamaha WR250R which I considered and dismissed.

@@TheMissendenFlyer I think you'll get them in the UK as soon as supply lines are back in full flow. Shipping by land and sea out of China is badly affected at the moment due to Covid-19. I've got an electric mountain bike sitting at the Chinese/Mongolian in a warehouse waiting for the border to open. It was built for me in Shanghai about 3 months ago. The border was supposed to open today for overland goods but no passengers yet. I was lucky to get the Storm Bee used. I think it was a test bike imported directly by the buyer last April. Great bike. I'm really impressed with it.

Stupid move considering the ability of the technology. Bikes, especially in the western world are more like toys for most (I know some people really use them) and do little yearly mileage but do require range and in less developed countries the infrastructure for electric bikes just not exist especially when you see adventure riders topping up their tanks in towns and villages with people pouring petrol from Tupperware and coke bottles. What would be a better option would be for the government to take all tax off of electric bikes and scooters and fuel efficient ICE bikes (think NC750) and also take the tax off motorcycle gear. This might encourage people to swap to bikes for commuting. If the government want to change something maybe consider the yachting industry where boats use very large capacity ICE engines where 1000 litres might get you 250 miles, what’s the betting yachts aren’t forced to go electric by 2035.

I'm a lover of dakar-esque bikes. It harkens back to the crazy days of desert racing. The Husky appeals to many because it captures the esthetics a bit more, with the rounded headlight and such, as apposed to the transformer-ish, ultramodern, angular, stying of the KTM equivalent. It makes the owners, or the want-to-be owners, feel like true adventurers. On the way to starbucks, or the Brit equivalent. The GS honestly is in the same category, so it's a bit odd you own one of those, but don't like the others. But Motorcycles are a passion for most, for the feelings (or memories) it evokes, so I'd never criticize an owner of any motorcycle. 4 Stroke, 2 Stroke, retro, cruiser, Rally Racer, street racer, they're really all beautiful in their own way, to someone.
@TheMissendenFlyer3 жыл бұрын

Big lover of 2-strokes and had all the LC’s, YPVS, RGV’s etc. Essentially as the power strokes are twice as frequent as a 4-stroke (good at maths ain’t I?!) the responsiveness of the delivery is twice as ‘sharp’. Inherently lighter (less bits whirling around) and equally simpler. Downsides are heat issues (too much fun and they can ‘nip up’) more so when cold. Sounds & smells are subjective but they get under your skin and usually a love affair for life is formed. Hopefully this clarifies the appeal, Andy.

Good afternoon TMF, if you can find a way.. get a ride on an RD350LC.. or the later YPVS.. they were 'the' bike of my youth. If you imagine your 19 again whilst riding either, you will understand 2 strokes in their entirety. PS... Any chance of a z900 review? Both you and Chops seem to have missed this bike. Thanks.

Love the look of the new Z650 classic, but those pipes are just so out of place, it should have upswept conical silencers either side like the Enfield 650 and Triumph Bonneville`s. Also, live the green and gold wheels colour scheme. I agree the Kwacker looks better than the Trident, but the Trident is by far the better bike, just a shame it looks a bit quirky. I would love to see Triumph bring out a proper classic style triple, something that would look very much like the old T160 of the 70s, yet with up to date chassis dynamics. Similar in vein to the Speed Twin and T120, but with a similar looking 3 cylinder engine.
@TheMissendenFlyer3 жыл бұрын
Trouble is these days if a manufacturer develops a new engine they like to use it in multiple bikes….not sure Triumph would develop a “retro triple” for one model….
@neillambton40652 жыл бұрын
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes, i totally agree. Although i`d love to see it, i doubt very much it will ever happen, unless, they get to the end of the developement potential of the 900 and 1200 platforms and look for something different., then we might be in for a real treat.

Another interesting round-up, where has the year gone? My issues with the electric bikes from the MCN test are: prohibitive purchase cost (mid to high £20k!!), range and charge time/ availability. Can you imagine a small group heading out for a ~300 mile days ride only to be waiting around for charge points and bikes to charge before completing the ride. Spend less than half that on a Ninja 1000SX, GSXS1000 or NT1100 and have no issues. It's a tough sell for these bikes for sure. I'm with you on the £4k bike choice, a used Street Triple has more going for it than a MT07 although both are great bikes to ride. Keep up the good work 😉👍👍

Yes Ed that was pretty much the point the MCN article was making....

I’m just afraid of not being heard and being pulled out on while filtering… electric bikes aren’t gonna sell well but cars that’s a different story
@rayphot3 жыл бұрын
@@NudaMan To be honest, most car drivers don't see or hear you on an ICE bike even with a big exhaust. I've not had any issues on my Zero S in a year and a half of ownership. They are not completely silent, there is a motor whine which I think is pretty cool. I just ride defensively and assume that every car driver is some sort of knob who is trying to kill me 😀
@edxr250r3 жыл бұрын
@@NudaMan - my experience suggests that they'll drive into you regardless of whether your bike is near silent or really loud, if they're not looking for a bike they're certainly not listening for one either! However £28k is crazy money and doesn't make sense for me.

Kawasaki KZ650 / 4 came out in 1976 to 19??. I had a KZ400 parallel twin the summer of 1976 and wish I could have afforded the KZ650 4 cylinder. Fit and finish of the KZ650 was that of a KZ900 / KZ1000 big brothers. Take care, Ride Safe.

A researcher at Swinburne University in Melbourne (Australia) invented a graphene oxide film (carbon based) that's 3D printed for energy storage that charges in minutes/seconds, can be charged & discharged million of times ( so no effective lifespan), therefore infinetly more environmentally friendly than lithium etc as no mining or disposal costs. Currently power storage per kg is the same as lithium so no advantage there, it looks like mass production is the issue at the moment. Be interesting to see if/when this technology makes it's way past phones etc into cars and motorcycles.

As a pilot, you may have seen that the 1st ever flight using synthetic fuel took place recently, if planes can use it, so will bikes and cars. The only question is cost to manufacture?

hey Andy, looks like you opened a can of worms with the two stroke thing, lol. i remember spending my youth smelling two stroke oil at olivers mount races with my dad . still brings back many great memories . my current stable is also a black and gold 2010 street triple R with underseat arrows and a slightly more dignified susuki gsx1250 fa for me and wife . love the content and honest views thankyou.

Great reviews again, love kawasaki but this thing 650 for me is lacking two cylinders, Two Stoke bikes I had many majority Suzuki last one was GT 750 watercool took that through Belgium France little bit of Germany and Switzerland ,put it in for a GS 1000 struggled with it at first even offered the new owner to do a swop an money, no joy he loved it, several months later took the GS to France and Switzerland absolutely brilliant bike 👍

A splendid Bike news TMF, very enjoyable. Really glad sports tourers are back. Kawasaki never left & now Suzuki, Honda & Moto Guzzi have joined the party with no doubt more to follow. As for 2 Strokes they are amazing, for about 15,000 miles lol. They're so pure & fun & it's like hitting nitrous when the powervalve opens up. Used to have a TZR125 & an RGV250 & they were so much fun for not much money I would always pick a V2 over a V4, be that the Panigale or Streetfighter, & would never look back for a second.

I must say I agree with you regarding the styling of the new Yamaha XSR900. I own a very retro looking 2021 red and white model and it is indeed a thing of beauty. Reminiscent of the RD350 of old. The new one looks far more like its cousin the MT09 and has lost that old style retro look that i love. A definite step back for the retro look they were championing in recent times. BTW, I purchased my XSR after watching your review and you were laughing as you rode it!!!
