I am a 59 yr old thin woman in menopause with hypercalciumia (familial high blood levels of calcium, confirmed with parathyroid testing) and am to be treated with my breast cancer with estrogen blockers which can leach calcium from bones. I also have osteopenia and arthritis in the spine… all told this sounds pretty grim. Thoughts?

@shek9 So sorry to hear about your bone loss. Unfortunately, hormone blockers can definitely accelerate that. It's a tough situation after breast cancer, for sure. For a deep dive into hormones, breast cancer, and what the research says, I'd recommend Estrogen Matters by Avrum Bluming, MD.

Please were from Houston and the doctors were telling her to take more calcium even though she is high in calcium. She has Osteopenia and the doctors don't know what to do. How could they tell her to take more calcium if she has too much calcium with Osteopenia?
@SimpleHormones

As I mention in the video . . . calcium isn't the solution for osteoporosis. Taking extra calcium in menopause without optimal hormones is like having a garage full of lumber and building materials, but no contractor to do the actual remodeling of your house. The calcium doesn't increase bone strength or density if there's no estradiol encouraging bone building.

I don't know many Indian hormone specialists. I do however know one in Bangalore. The good news is that Dr. Vivek Kadambi has been through a hormone training program, the same one I'm certified with. He also teaches other doctors about hormone optimization. If you contacted his office, he might know of someone in your area (assuming you're not in Bangalore, since India is a big country). It would be worth asking though. Here's his website: bellesante.in/ Good luck!

Isn’t the amount of calcium in the blood tightly regulated by hormones, such as parathyroid? Meaning just because I supplement with calcium, it doesn’t automatically end up in the blood causing calcification of the arteries? Would love to understand this. Thank you for your valuable content!

I am 75 and have just been diagnosed with osteopenia. My doctor has prescribed fosamax which I am hesitant in taking because of the side effects. I went through years of horrible hot flash filled days during menopause and still get occasional hot flashes. But every time I have ever asked to have my hormones tested so HRT could be considered, doctors said no. They told me HRT has been shown to have severe side effects, and they say HRT increases risk of heart disease, breast cancer, and strokes. That terrified me. Now I just watched your video and I don’t know what to believe or where to go for help in treating this osteopenia so it can be reversed. I am active, do not smoke, I work out, eat a balanced diet with intermittent fasting, take D3, K2, and many other supplements. I just recently got a vibration platform that I have heard can help strengthen bone, too. What else can I do?
@SimpleHormones
@SimpleHormones 2 жыл бұрын
Pat - Thanks for watching. I'm saddened to hear that doctors have been so resistant to optimizing your hormones. They clearly have not understood what the evidence in the medical literature says about how optimal hormones are not only safe and effective at eliminating hot flashes and every other menopause symptom . . . they also are the single most important key to reducing long-term health risks. The biggest health risk for women in menopause is heart disease, followed closely by osteoporosis. Women just don't get osteoporosis before menopause. After menopause, it's rampant. I would disagree 1000% that ""HRT increases the risk of heart disease, breast cancer, and strokes." The literature just doesn't support that. I would also reassure you that HRT does have some side effects, all of which are related to doses that are too high or too low. I say these things because I've talked with thousands of women, both on HRT and off. The difference is astounding! My wife has been having her hormones optimized for almost 20 years . . . and there's a HUGE difference between her and other women who haven't. My suggestion is that you try and find a hormone optimization specialist who really knows what they're doing with hormones. It's not good to go without hormones for 20+ years, as you've unfortunately been forced to do. But there are some ways to at least strengthen your bones. Vitamin D is important and Vitamin K as well (although you'll want to take adequate DOSES of both, which is usually much more than most women take).

@@SimpleHormones thank you for caring enough to answer! Would this be the bio identical hormones I have heard about? I live near a compounding pharmacy that does that. @@RevelationArtist I work with hundreds of doctors, nurse practitioners, and PAs, all over the US and Canada, who help men and women get “optimal” hormone levels. Those are levels that aren’t too high or too low, but they’re just right. Just right hormones do 2 things: 1) eliminate symptoms 2) protect against long-term health risks - like osteoporosis

Is there a minimal amount of estrogen that can be taken to protect against osetoporosis?
@SimpleHormones
@SimpleHormones 2 жыл бұрын
In this older study of ultralow-dose estradiol for bone density, bone density was improved with only 0.25MG of oral estradiol, which is probably too low to help with hot flashes and other symptoms. jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/197177

Osteoporosis. ,Can you start HRT at 64?
@SimpleHormones
@SimpleHormones 2 жыл бұрын
Kathryn - you CAN. The sticking point is finding a doctor who recognizes the value and safety of getting hormones optimized a few years after you've been in menopause. Getting your estradiol optimized is the single most important factor in protecting bone density, by far. But many doctors don't understand that and want to give a class of drug called bisphosphonates (like Fosamax®), which are way less effective.

Yes, definitely. Either micronized progesterone or another progestin tailored to your needs.
@SimpleHormones
@SimpleHormones 2 жыл бұрын
I recommend that all post-menopausal women be on progesterone and not another progestin, whether you’ve had a hysterectomy or not. Progesterone relieves several life-changing symptoms, like depression, anxiety, insomnia. It also protects BOTH the uterus and breast, especially when given along with estradiol.

I explained osteoporosis to my wife this way. Taking calcium for osteoporosis is like buying a bunch of lumber to fix the crumbling walls in your house. Unless you have a contractor actually using that lumber to make repairs and build new walls, it will just sit in your garage, not helping you. In menopause, the "contractor" that builds bone stops working. No matter how much calcium you put in, there won't be any new bone growth. Only when your estradiol level is optimized do your bone building workers (they're called "osteoblasts") get started building new bone.
