@@hasselett That's the long and short of it. In the past, people watched superhero movies because when they went into the cinema, they were expecting a good mixture of action, comedy, and an interconnected universe with consistently evolving characters. The suits looked at this, and only saw "People like movies with super-powered people and lots of CGI destruction, that's the ticket!", and have been trying to milk the audience based on their misunderstanding while ignoring the actual reasons why the genre became popular.

I think Blue Beetle might have had a chance if DC had known what they were doing, the character has actually had some moderate success in the comics and through being a significant side character with good adaptations to animation, both Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice. I actually did have some initial interest in the movie, but what killed that interest was: 1) The "Batman is a Fascist" line from the trailer 2) The attempt to promote the movie on racial grounds 3) That the Beetle suit itself was using a 'happy, friendly, encouraging' personality rather than the bloodthirsty killer war machine psychopath personality that Young Justice used so well 4) That DC is just an ugly dumpster fire overall right now The movie may have had a chance in concept, but in practice DC did everything wrong.

I just remember watching endgame and thinking "Yeah, this is the peak. It's all downhill from here." Say what you want about endgame, but the finale of it felt earned, at least. It was a decade of buildup, and seeing just about every movie represented in that final fight felt special. From someone who had been watching it since phase 1, it felt like a great ending to one of the biggest risks that a film studio has ever taken. I consider phase 4 apocrypha.

Kind of like the end of "It's a Wonderful Life", where every character who played a part in the story has a walk-on and contributes to the happy ending. After that, the story is done. @KarazolaX Жыл бұрын
@RichSmithson Yeah, it stuck out like a sore thumb, but the movie itself besides that is honestly pretty fun. I wasn't bothered by fat thor, it was a bit over the top but I honestly liked it, because it showed how damaged Thor was. He didn't think he had anyone left who he needed to be protector for. All of his family was dead, and his he'd known for thousands of years were gone. The stuff with Hawkeye was great, and the finale was a great set-piece to get everyone in the fight in a meaningful way. People didn't like the alternate timeline thanos but it was a decent way of the movie having its cake and eating it too, so they could use the more classic thanos design and have his children show up to fight. The only thing I wished they'd done was set up some properties between infinity war and endgame so we could have gotten more in that period of time, we got far too little of that five year gap to soak in.

Guardians of The Galaxy became a whole film saga that performed consistently well despite the fact that the whole ensemble of characters were virtually unknown. Its not the characters that are the problem its the way the studios are telling and marketing these stories. Yeah but remember they were intertwined with the whole MCU and Thanos thing too. So it was almost required reading to keep up with the story that was being laid out. I'm not saying they're bad movies but just that you would have missed a lot if you didn't see them. If a GOTG movie had come out years ago outside the framework of the already existing MCU then it likely would have bombed. Though I will say that the original GOTG movie is one of my favorites in the MCU. They tried that "required reading" trick with Captain Marvel too but I think people were wise to it at that point. All it really needs to do is take the buddy cop formula and apply it to a superhero movie, considering that Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are very much a bro pair in the comics. That teamup of two d-list heroes, each fairly insecure in their own right and looked down upon by the other superheroes, could in theory give them something solidly unique to work with, and give an uplifting kind of story as they prove themselves to be more than just a rich boy with fancy gadgets and a petty future thief. No offense, but this is a movie I wanted. It’s nice as a Mexican American to finally see a superhero that looks like me on the big screen. I’ve always loved Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle. As a DC fan, we need more DC superheroes to get a spotlight than just Batman and Superman.
@ROMANTIKILLER2 Жыл бұрын
May I ask (legit question, I am interested to know) why do you find the look and ethnic origin of the superhero particularly important? Is it because of the often not exactly flattering representation of Mexicans in Hollywood big movies, so that a Mexican superhero would make a welcome change for once? Asking this because as an Italian according to movie we are all either gangsters or restaurant owners, and I am not aware of any hero (if we a exclude a plumber who is a Japanese parody of an Italian).
@Crimson28 Жыл бұрын
@@ROMANTIKILLER2 I don’t find it particularly important. I’m not looking for diversity in every single film project. While there are other Hispanic superheroes out there, they’re not being shown the live action treatment until this film. Only in DC animation are there more diverse characters being used. Blue Beetle was given a more prominent role in Young Justice, which is my favorite portrayal to date. Injustice 2 and the DC Animated Movie Universe versions were good as well. Seeing someone who looks like me shouldn’t matter in the long run but it does. That’s why Black Panther was a mega success and Miles Morales exposure has amped up since 2018 after the success of the Insomniac games and the Spider-Verse movies. Positive representation in major superhero adaptations go a long way. Peter Parker and Matt Murdock are my favorite characters and it has nothing to do with them being white. It has everything to do with both of them being guys I can relate to. Jaime Reyes is also someone I can relate to and it’s a nice bonus he looks more like me and other guys I grew up with.

If you want to see something closer to the original Blue Beetle before DC ruined the character, re-watch Watchmen (the movie, not the series) and look at Nite Owl. Alan Moore based him on Blue Beetle. BB is one of the characters that DC inherited in the 80s after buying out the old Charlton Comics. Moore wanted to explore those characters in a dark way, but DC nixed it, so he created Watchmen and based most of the characters on the Charlton characters (Captain Atom became Dr. Manhattan, The Question became Rorschach , Blue Beetle became Nite Owl, etc). Ironically Nite Owl from Watchmen is closer to the original Blue Beetle than whatever this reboot/retcon is. Blue Beetle was created by Steve Ditko in the 1960s, after the latter left Marvel in the wake of the controversy over who had actually created Spider-Man, himself or Stan Lee. The Charlton Blue Beetle was more Batman-like, a crime-fighting scientist with a hovercraft that looked like a giant beetle. Sad that DC has ruined what was originally a cool character.

@kingcosworth2643 Жыл бұрын
Westerns didn't run for over 20 years as the main fixture and nothing but westerns. The problem with the superhero movies is that there is basically no other genre been made, certainly of any quality.
@lance134679 Жыл бұрын
@@kingcosworth2643 I guess it's not quite the same. Superhero movies being so dominant at the mega budget level should rightly cause some fatigue, especially for people that were only lukewarm on them to begin with. Still, I imagine executives at every TV studio collectively made the decision to stop green lighting western TV shows at some point, and that could eventually happen to DC and Marvel, both movies and shows.

At least Blue Beetle is original. At least it's not a rip off like so many other things. At least it's not like, for example, The Guyver, originally a manga property from the 1980s, which is about a young man who discovers an alien device that then integrates itself into his physiology, allowing him to transform into an alien/human hybrid superweapon that consists of a suit of blue insect carapace armor with an arsenals of transformable armaments, and drives him to commit uncharacteristic acts of violence, making him fear that he is becoming a danger to those around him. Whereas the Jamie Reyes Blue Beetle is a DC property from the 2000s that's about a young man who discovers an alien device that then integrates itself into his physiology, allowing him to transform into an alien/human hybrid superweapon that consists of a suit of blue insect carapace armor with an arsenals of transformable armaments, and drives him to commit uncharacteristic acts of violence, making him fear that he is becoming a danger to those around him. Yep, good thing it's just a standard follow up to the first two Blue Beetles and is far closer to those things that DC owns than anything they don't own.

But that's the problem with these KZbinrs they don't even know that. They think he's a rip-off of other characters like Spider-Man because they don't read comics. They did the same with Dr Fate just saying he's dcs version of Dr strange. Sure these youtubers just said it there they think he's just going to be a rip-off Spider-Man and he is going to be bitten by a radioactive blue beetle. They don't read comics.

@@emperorsean1Marvel Comics would not exist if they didn't steal shit from DC. I wanna tell you a story about a team of young super-powered people, who wear matching, two-tone uniforms, who strive to protect a world that fears and hates them under the tutelage of a wheelchair bound mentor. IT'S CALLED _THE DOOM PATROL_ AND IT CAME OUT SIX MONTHS BEFORE X-MEN #1! "Oh the Flash is doing a multiverse now?" Mofo, the Flash was establishing a superhero multiverse in DC when Marvel was still doing romance comics.

Well, here in Australia comes out 4 weeks later, apparently because of our upcoming school holidays. So I'm wondering after 28days if It will already be on digital
@whiskeyhound Жыл бұрын
It's incredibly stupid to be following a release schedule that's about 20 years out of date, you'd think they'd want to capitalise on the buzz of it releasing in one country filtering out online to build sales in other countries with a simultaneous release.
@aussierob390 Жыл бұрын
@whiskeyhound It was part of the reason the Australia had such a high piracy rate, telling people to wait 4-6week sometime more for arbitrary reasons. Hell Haunted Mansion is still almost 2 weeks away and it's doa in the states, only reason it won't already be streaming is they will leave it in limbo till Halloween week.

The problem with Jaime is they gave him Infinity War Iron Man level armor but he has to act like a bumbling moron otherwise all of the conflict makes no sense. Congratulations you literally HAVE TO write an unlikeable protagonist. The reason Generator Rex worked is because not only did he not have the luxury of armor (thus a glass cannon) you gave him more powerful enemies.
@Shockguey Жыл бұрын
@@caseycockerham3925 You're gonna get people saying otherwise despite him having all the generic tropes of Chicano characters. "OH LOOK, HE HAS A LUCHADOR MASK" Ted Kord is just a classic vigilante, but unlike Batman he doesn't have a luxury of expensive tech so he's McGuyver-ing his way through the criminal underworld. It makes him intelligent, likeable, resourceful right out of the gate without even establishing a villain or love interest.

Hilarious that "He's Latino!" is all the movie has to offer, when the Blue Beetle for 95% of his history was Ted Kord, who wasn't Latino at all. (BTW, Nite Owl in WATCHMEN was based on Blue Beetle, and neither of those guys were Hispanic, either.)

Kind of the Captain Marvel movies and comics "Carol Danvers - she's a woman, and she's got photon powers, and she deals with Kree shit." When the majority of the time, the title was about a man called Captain Marvel, who was Kree, when Carol in the comics got her powers as hand ma downs and those got stolen by Rogue.
