I've heard some DM's do the same with Wizard robes as in the Jedi robes story. Thankfully I've only ever had a DM make one or two offhanded comments about my character not being in "uniform" since I *rarely* dress my wizards in robes, my abjurer dressed like a nobleman (in order to make it look like he was just some rich guy with the other players as his security), and my lawful good necromancer dressed in a plague doctor's outfit, I'd googled "D&D Doctor" and most looked like plague doctors, so that's what I went with, I'd taken some healing abilities and the healer's feat since he was indeed a doctor in his backstory.

About the first story. I was the same as the bad player a few years back. I was a good player and DM but then I had a major loss in my life. I kinda went insane and used D&D as the outlet for my abnormal behavior. It’s only years later with a lot of healing that I can look back and see how bad it was. What I’m saying is that if a good player went bad there might be very real causes.
@tsifirakiehl42502 жыл бұрын
First story: I have to wonder what changed with this guy. How does a player go from happily roleplaying and helping the new players to “The game is only about me and how powerful I am in combat!”? Did he get a personality transplant or something? Second story: I regret watching this while eating breakfast. Third story: I know OP will probably never read this, but if they ever do, my advice is to kick that guy. His bossiness and murderhoboing are actively detracting from the game, and communication didn’t work, so he needs to go. The game is going to be SO much better without him. Fourth story: Just invite this guy to watch all the Star Wars movies with you and point out every Jedi character not wearing robes. Ask him to show you the scene where they got punished for it. Petty? Yes, but this guy’s a jerk. Here’s hoping OP finds a good Star Wars game soon!

I have a system for my campaign where I make it clear that if someone is uncomfortable with something or they're not able to make it or whatever else, they can DM me over Discord (which we play over) and I won't disclose anything really to the other players on the matter. I'll take the fall and blame for any such thing. It's actually a double whammy because since my players know that they can come to me with this, not only do they trust me more but also, when I make a call to not allow something dodgy, they can't know for sure if I'm the one who doesn't like it or if it's someone else who came to me privately. They seldom use that, we all have a high tolerance for dark themes, but they know that the option is there. In over 2 years we've run the campaign, they've used it to ban PvP and the player came forward the next session, beyond that, they only use that option when they're not going to be able to make it to a session or even just don't feel like playing that week. If enough people say that they can't or don't want to make it that week, the session is cancelled usually without much explanation.

Sounds to me like GM was looking for an excuse to kick that player. Maybe there's some behavior from OP not included, or maybe the DM just accepted too many players expecting some to back out last minute, when that didn't happen instead of being an adult and explaining it, they decided to find some random reason. I've seen such things before.

Story 1 thoughts: make a rule to never allow homebrew stuff unless made by you the DM with willing players and just stay away from UA if you are playing a long term game. Also, don’t let a character go 9 levels before ruling they they can’t do a RAW build, I feel the coffeelock block is a bad call on the DM as it can be done without stretching the rules and is an obvious outcome that can be recognized far earlier.

In some campaigns I've played he's underpowered. Although I have a character that can move damn fast in a homebrew cyberpunk/Shadowrun campaign, she can't beat a bullet, so if you can trace the blur, stay away from the groups fire, and get your own Jillettes to keep her distracted, you could effectively land a shot. 😆 Ironically, she's a kitten compared to some enemies in that game.

The star wars story feels like OP is leaving something out. The dm focusing on such a minor detail that has literally no mechanical impact seems out of place for the stakes of the argument, but I can see a dm kicking someone if they thought the player was trolling. Had a player in a modern game try to say their character just cosplayed as a drow every day of their life; context is key for these stories.
@BlueTressym2 жыл бұрын
True but sadly, such pettiness is very believable. I reckon the robes weren't even the real issue though but the DM focused on that as something he thought he could use to either annoy the player into leaving or kick him for rather than talk about it like an adult if he had a legit issue. Stupid and juvenile but there are a lot of stupid and juvenile people
@rynowatcher2 жыл бұрын
@@BlueTressym given how OP "well actually, jedi do not have a canonical dress code," I think it was more of the same for other issues and the dm was looking for an excuse. Hot take, but the Jedi robes absolutely are a uniform, if an unspoken one. Not only are the Jedi an officially recognized order whose members enjoy certain privileges, but they're also a cult with an established dogma.
@vegeta0022 жыл бұрын
Even unofficially, they don't really work as a uniform. They lack the signature feature of a uniform; uniformity. With many having their own appearance and the colours being the only common denominator, there's nothing about their outfit that identifies them as a Jedi. Hell, they don't even all wear robes, despite their outfits often being called "Jedi Robes". Another point against it being a uniform is the deliberately generic and simplistic design that makes it easy to blend into crowds whenever they want, which is the complete opposite of a uniform (which is meant to make you stand out). If there's anything about their appearance that could be considered "uniform", it's that they all carry a lightsaber (which is what usually gives their identity away, rather than their robes).
