Well, Goku was a low class warrior in Saiyan hierarchy. He was considered trash and sent away. But because he was considered worthless since birth and wasn't naturally skilled nor had a high powerful like an elite such as Vegita and by random luck he forgot all about his past, he became a pure hearted, good spirited person who always strived for as far as he could go and therefore was given the opportunity to train with various masters on earth which allowed him to become as strong as he is at the end of the series. All this through hard work, determination, a never ending will and his good nature which allowed him to be accepted by these great masters and helped lead the plot of the story throughout most of original Dragon Ball. He became the savior of planet Earth which he was sent to destroy. He's the Saiyan raised on earth, pure of heart. In the Saiyan arc he proved how wrong the saiyans were about him by defeating Vegeta and Nappa (the ideal saiyans, the elite), in the Frieza arc due to his pure heart and nature as well he became a Super Saiyan unlike vegeta, who died and failed in becoming what he sought, and ultimately at the end of the series he's proven to be better than Vegeta, He is the best.

I watched DBZ from start to finish when I was a kid. Absolutely loved the Android and Cell saga. I should really rewatch it. I kinda lost interest about three quarters through the Buu saga. His continous form changes were a little tedious for my taste. I have to admit though, Goku going to Super Saiyan 3 was mind-blowing. I should get back in to it.

Listen kiddies... DBZ was one of the first, if not the first anime to receive widespread recognition here in America, which is why it's so beloved. Yes, there are better anime out there with better animation, characters and fight sequences, but DBZ holds more of a nostalgic place in a lot of Americans hearts because it's the first anime they really watched and collected trading cards and toys from aside from Pokémon, Digimon and YuGiOh.

I noticed there's a trend of americans not enjoying the Japanese version of DBZ (or any Dragon Ball at all) for the sole fact that Goku is voiced by Masako Nozawa. Guys, give it a chance, it's not bad at all and it's pretty good when you get used to it. Nozawa's screams are fantastic, the "serious" Goku voice is top-notch and she's really fun in the happy scenes. Again, give it a chance. I've recently been rewatching all of Dragon Ball in Japanese (subtitled, of course) and it's been really fun. And by the way, to all of you complaining about Goku having a female voice, did you forget Freeza was voiced by Linda Young in the dub y'all grew up with?

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed the Buu saga the most. Just my opinion, but I really loved it when Buu showed up as an unstoppable lug that was soon befriended by the CHAMP, Mr. Satan. His extreme malice and anger being unleashed in the form of Super Buu, who was horrifying in his own right killing off all of the human race out of boredom and managing to take down Gotenks, Piccolo and the awakened Gohan with just his planning and even having a fun fight with Vegito. Even then, it just got better with Kid Buu, the original pure evil Buu who destroys just to destroy. Having such an extremely unpredictable and insane antagonist was a huge hook for me. This is just my opinion though :^)

kid buu was the part where i kinda lost compmletely interst honestly. it was an itnersting concept, but at the same time, there is no way kid buu would be usch a threat to goku at that point. he had been robbed of two major power boosts, and thus was weaker than the majin buu we started with, someone goku fought evenly with and possibly oculd have defeated. basically the moment they got him to a planet durable enough to not just implode from the fight would have been the moment he lost.

When I was 8 years old, I saw DBZ with spanish dubbing in Cancun Mexico on a small T.V in some restaurant while on vacation with my family. Never seen anything like it since I was from a small town in utah growing up with Reboot, beastwars, power rangers, ninja turtles etc. About a year or so later, cartoon network came on to the scene which was later followed by toonanime. There it featured this mysterious and amazing looking cartoon that I never thought id see again. DBZ changed my world for the better and helped shape my childhood. Iis near and dear to my heart and the feelings it gave me while young will last with me until I die.

I love DBZ but it totally fell off a cliff quality wise in the Buu saga even with the incredible Vegeta and Goku scenes. I wish it ended with Vegeta killing him self to defeat Buu to give his character an actual ending or Gohan actually becoming a protagonist instead of a joke.

I disagree I love that Vegeta sacrificed himself in the Buu saga but then he got brought back so we can now see him develop as a hero. I would never trade any of of his arc away it's been fantastic. Especially his stuff with Moro in the manga. However not letting him kill Freeza was a slap in the face. I do agree though that the Goku/Vegeta stuff in the back half of Buu was the highlight of those episodes. I just wish that bromance/partnership continued in Super.

If you're at episode 10 that's got to be filler which means you haven't even scratched the surface on the Saiyan saga yet. Keep watching it gets better trust me. But you might want to watch the Kai version if you're not use to filler. And I wouldn't recommend watching out of order no point you won't get it.

Super is probably the best thing that happene to Dragon Ball in years, while the Beerus and Freeza arcs were dragged out, the rest is absolutely fantastic. The Universe 6 arc introduced some of the best characters in the entire series, especially Hit. Not to mention the fights were never dragged out and incredibly engaging. The Goku Black arc, while too long for its own good with a shit ending and Zamasu being bad, was good for the most part. Smaller arcs and filler episodes were also good with my favorite being the baseball game between the two universes. It's what GT should have been.

Mostly because they ruined Goku as a character, turning him from naive and earnest to down syndrome patient, killed Vegeta's growth through the Buu saga as well as the unnecessary retcons (see protara earrings among others). Most of the new characters are bland and forgettable, they brought back Pilaf for no reason, shitty animation and poor story telling, especially considering the embarrassment that was the Zamasu arc. The original was no masterpiece but Super fails to capture what made it great: it's charm. Among the faults listed above, it just feels like "Pandering: The Anime" to me, adding nothing new and retroactively ruining the original. Even GT was better

Roy Senpai's Fan Club yeah, he does have his rose tinted glasses fastened too tight for this. If he watched the original run of DBZ, filler included in a recent rewatch, I dont think his opinion would be the same. I think the honor if best action anime goes to Brotherhood as well. All of the points he brought up was biased like the fights. There was plenty of cheap animation used like frequent collision clouds with no one on screen and repetitive animations to indicate extreme speed. I love you as a reviewer Chris, but this review was just bad, and this is coming from a huge DBZ fan. Plus I think OG DB is better.

I agree and my favorite moment in the Buu saga was when Vegita was trying to get the people of earth to put their hands up for the Spirit Bomb. Priceless Vegita. But Stuckmann I have to slightly disagree with your view. I agree action-wise and story-wise DBZ is insane. But Yu Yu Hakusho has that special something too. Maybe not on the same level, but has a strong character development within it. Great vid though man!

I agree Yu Yu Hakusho is great!! I think after the big tournament though the story falls flat and I wasn't a fan of them retiring Kuwabara's character later when he was so pivotal to the plot. But yes DBZ and Vegeta are awesome I'm new to the franchise so I'm very glad I got into it during the pandemic.

I'm like you. DBZ is the best anime ever made. We wouldn't have the likes of Naruto, Bleach, Hunter X Hunter, Fairy Tale, Soul Eater or others without DBZ. It was epic, truly epic. The characters were likable and unique. The settings and locations were different. All around, the series was enjoyable. I've got it and Dragonball GT collected, so far. Plan on getting the original series with Kid Goku and Dragonball Super once it finishes up. It's a good time to come on and be a DBZ fan with all the box sets and whatnot. They're all affordable now. Got the entire DBZ series for just a little over a $100. GT was less than $25. I highly recommend the show as well as the others to everyone. It's still as good as I remember it to be.

MaverickDoesEveryhing the sub doesn’t suck, neither does the dub. The dub is certainly better and famous for the (at least the characters voiced by the more talented actors) the screaming and powering up, but sometimes the sub captures the characters better with their voices, not everyone sounds like a girl. That’s just Goku’s entire family really seeing as Goku, Gohan, Bardock, Goten, Goku Black And Turles are all voiced by the same person. But Vegeta, Piccolo, Roshi, Zamasu, Vegito/Gogeta, Trunks etc sound great. Your personal preference is up to you but neither sucks.

This show is fucking amazing Funimation dub was so good they may have Westernized it alot especially by making Goku a Superhero like Superman which he is not, but it was still sick & Faulconers score brought alot of intensity to it. The Japanese dub is dope as hell hardcore and very OG & DragonBall Kai is a great more accurate clean cut adaptation of the DBZ manga even if its missing some key voices. The point is no matter which version of DBZ you watch this show is legendary, It introduced so many of us to anime, Sure DBZ has its flaws but its perfect to me because its simple and everything flows so well. This show will always be my favorite anime.

I could not disagree more on the last half of Buu Saga being that terrible. Surely the Cell Saga climax is by far the best, but I thought the Buu arc was really entertaining for the most part. Buu is whimsical and magical, and it's really kind of creepy and demonic, and when you throw something that supernatural into our heroes world, things would definitely turn a bit...funky. Off the rails. Things got REALLY interesting for me when we first caught a glimpse that there was more to Fat Buu...that maybe he was not just a silly baby. There was many layers to his madness. and to find out there was a Kai deep inside his being, as a result of sacrificing himself to save the Kais! Man...heavy stuff

Buu was such a threat that the Z fighters were forced to keep fighting him over and over again, always throwing their strongest at him only to be defeated, and in the end, it wasn't the Z fighter who beat him, it was the unification of all mortal kind, a power the Z fighters could never achieve on their own at the time. Buu's constant evolution was a way to keep the story going and make new figurines, sure, but it also served a story purpose, even if Toriyama didn't mean it that way, particularly since he was infamous for just writing as he went along and had very few plans beforehand.

I respect your opinion, Chris, but I can't understand how someone can prefer the dub over the sub. I just can't understand... I've watched both versions, first the english one, after that the japanese one, and man, was I so mad with the fact that I wasted so much time watching the show first dubbed. Same goes for the first series, Dragon Ball. It's not like the sub is a little better than the dub, no, it's incomparably better than the dub. The music and the voice actors are so, so much better than the ones from the english version. Even those long power-up scenes that so many people complain about are elevated by the music and the VA's work, so that I actually enjoy them.

Again Chris thank you for introducing me to this awesome series. I've been loving nearly everything about it. It has annoying filler (but sorry Chris I disagree those Goku and Vegeta adventures inside Buu were a lot of fun) and some of the animation suffers at times however the story is so emotionally charged and character driven that I feel so fulfilled as a new viewer watching it. I just get so absorbed because the show is that good. And while I love the action it never takes focus away from the character development or plot but instead enhances it. Also yes Vegeta is my favorite character too and probably the best written in the entire franchise 😊

I wasn't really that much into anime anymore in a long time, but I had to see that stuff in a row. While I don't think the pay-off is perfect (I'd rather they'd choose a finale around the brother instead of that quick addition), it was just so darn entertaining, plus the friggin style and animation = amazing. While I enjoy one-punch man, I am not half as hooked somehow. Maybe it has to do with the theme being just slightly more appealing to me.
