Story 4: NTA The furniture rule is telling for me. A professionally trained service dog would be trained not to get onto furniture. If the dog is getting up on furniture I would question whether or not it was an actual service dog. Additionally, part of training service dogs is training them to ignore other animals. Overcoming the chase instinct is a huge part of the training and it's where a lot of candidates fail. THAT was really the only compromise in the situation, as her stance was I'm not changing it no matter what- and if she refused to talk about it, could have been an ultimatum if one if them made it their hill. Also my thought was OP gets and fills out the necessary paperwork so she just needed to sign to confirm and it takes all the hassle off her, so there isn't an excuse of that. (It also helps with getting to the real reason of denying the change if it truly wasn't just the hassle like it ended up being in this case) It carries on both names and she still had her original name with his tacked on the end. I dont understand why everyone says changing your last name is so difficult unless it's just easier in my state. I did everything in like a day. New ID new social card took less than 1 hour. The rest was an email with the marriage license and then if they needed a signature it was just the next time I went into that place. Shoot one bank account that we just use as a saving, I sent the email but forgot about signature til 5 years later and I did it then( that was the next time I went in because we do everything online with it). Work wasn't hard either, I just handed them the marriage license and social and license, they made copies and did the rest the next time I was at work. I think if you combined everything it was a few hours.
@deedeeschway95662 жыл бұрын
I think it does depend on where you’re from but also not just official IDs are affected. Anything you are registered for or have your name on would have to be changed and records updated. If you own property, signed up for clubs/memberships, events, etc. Basically anything you would provide your ID as proof would have to be changed or it could cause problems. Do you continue using your email that has your maiden name? If not, then you have to update any accounts you use that email as a login. If you do keep using the old one, you will run into confusion using it with your new name. I do administrative work with databases and human resources so I see this especially when people forget to update some of their accounts. Some places also update your work email too. That’s annoying for a while.

the comments on story 4 rubbed me the wrong way. So many people immediately assumed that the dog was not a properly trained service dog and was simply a pet who was being given the priveledges of one through fraudulent paperwork. Why? Why does a disabled person have to explain to every single person they meet what their disability is and why the service animal is a necessity just to be treated with basic respect? They could have a mental disorder like depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, autism, or a sleep disorder. They could have a physical disability that isn't immediately visible like a heart condition, diabetes, chronic pain, vertigo, ALS, brain damage, etc etc. OP is NTA unless they need their dog by their side at all times and thus cannot be in the kitchen without their service animal without endangering their own safety. I hope that it's at least open concept or there are multiple entryways so the service animal can sit near the door. But everyone in the comments shitting on ESA's and assuming that the service dog is fake or unnecessary gets a full 5 out of 5 asshole rating for being ableist.
@JustAnotherBuckyLover2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the assumption of fraud or fakery is exhausting ableism. The trouble is that enough people DO try that BS to avoid having to leave their pet behind and that, to me, is on the same level as parking in a disabled space without the correct badge to do so, or the parents who insist their child in a stroller is just as much a viable use of them as an actual wheelchair user (don't get me started on that - the exclusion being if the child themselves is disabled and is young enough to use a stroller rather than a wheelchair). That said, I did want to clarify that autism isn't a mental illness. It's a neurological difference - our brains are wired up differently, it's not a malfunction of a "normal" brain. Ditto with a sleep disorder - while some might be related to psychological factors, I happen to have one (central sleep apnea) and it's absolutely a physical illness caused by a malfunction of my brain when I sleep, rather than a mental illness. But despite that, I also agree that ESAs have a valid place in society, but there's a different level of training involved. ANYTHING can be an ESA with little or no training, and there are different levels of expectation and allowances. If ALL ESAs had the same level of training as service animals, then there wouldn't be an issue with allowing them everywhere a service animal is allowed. But despite that, assuming that ALL ESAs/service animals are "just pets" is downright harmful and obnoxious and - as you said - just more of the rampant ableism in society - much akin to the way that so many vigilante white knights try to defend "really disabled people" by attacking those who don't look "disabled enough" when they're parking with a valid disabled badge/placard. Not all disabled people use a wheelchair, and not all wheelchair users are completely incapable of standing or walking short distances. That doesn't mean they're faking, it means that you can't see their disability and you need to shut up, because 99.9% of the time, you're just attacking actually disabled people in an attempt to "root out the fakers" that are (in reality) a tiny minority of cases.
@LilChuunosuke2 жыл бұрын
@@JustAnotherBuckyLover yeah, it is a sad reality that people pretend their dogs are service dogs when they aren't, but literally every time I see someone with a service dog, someone throws out that accusation. Even if the service dog user is fully blind. And ah, yeah, that was poor wording on my part. When I said mental illness, I meant that the origins of the problem originated from the brain and thus weren't something you could physically see. I probably should've just said "neurological problems" aha. I have a sleep disorder too. Been struggling to get a doctor to solve it (or at least diagnose it so I know which one I have) since I was old enough to realize taking 2+ hours to fall asleep wasn't normal, but my mother told them I was a hypochondriac and I'm also a fat woman, so it's hard to get doctors to listen to my problems. Words really aren't my strongsuit, no matter how much I practice and try to improve. I suck at phrasing things the correct way. :(
@JustAnotherBuckyLover2 жыл бұрын
@@LilChuunosuke Ah no, I'm not upset or anything, I understand... especially about the bullcrap ableism. You're right, that there's always someone who throws about "it's fake" or "it's just a pet" about legit service dogs etc. And as I said, I understand the mental/originating in the brain thing too. Especially when even the doctors get that wrong, and things like autism, ADHD etc are things you need a psychiatrist to diagnose, and even "mental illnesses" have a biological basis. :) I'm sorry that you're also struggling with insomnia issues too, it's really hard, especially as a woman (and a fat woman as well). I'm still fighting my doctors over my own sleep apnea and it took me the best part of two decades to get diagnosed with endometriosis. It's such BS. Yet more sexism, ableism and fatphobia in medicine. Please don't feel bad, that wasn't my intention, and trust me, as an autistic person, the bad at wording and making myself understood without people getting upset or pissed at me is something I struggle with EVERY. Single. Day.

Story 4 is tricky. I truly believe their are no assholes in the situation, but OP is pushing it. Op not expecting Clair to help with meal prep or anything is an easy way to keep the dog out of the kitchen, since Claire won't be in there. They have another bathroom which the dog is allowed in. Some people have bathrooms in their house that are only for the homeowners, and guests can't go in the main one. On the furniture is also an easy rule to follow, as the bed can be put next to where Clair is sitting, so the dog is always nearby. As an aside, some people do allow their service animals onto the furniture in their own homes, but it will know its not allowed up on furniture in other peoples homes. Chickens going in the coop so the dog can work out its zoomies and play is a good compromise, as the chickens won't care too much if their outdoor time is shortened by an hour or so. And some dogs don't have a big prey drive, which is a necessity when it comes to a service animal, so the dog won't try to chase the chickens if they see them (if they had to all go outside and the chickens are out, the dog is gonna see them, and it probably won't care) Although I would like to point out that those cats are definitely getting on the furniture when OP is asleep. Cats know when they aren't supposed to do something and will often do it anyway when they aren't being looked at

However if her dog actually does chase the chickens she hasn't been trained to be and actual service animal.

Service dogs are highly trained so misbehavior shouldn’t be an issue. Is it a CERTIFIED service dog or an uncertified emotional support dog? I could understand not letting them in the basement. Why would sil need to go downstairs? Why would she need to go into the kitchen? If there’s a separate full bathroom she shouldn’t need to go in the other one. Put locks on the doors to rooms you don’t want anyone in.
@maurer3d Жыл бұрын
If the SIL had a problem with these rules then the dog is definitely not a service dog, as service dogs need to be well trained and follow most of these rules by default. Sadly, with how the laws are in most places, Emotional Support Animals have no training or behavior guidelines, and people constantly lie about which group their animal falls into. Also Emotional Support Animals do not have the same legal protections as do Service Animals (at least in the USA).

Story 4: YTA. I’m not disabled or need of a service animal. But even I know that there’s a huge difference in the process of getting an emotional support animal and a service animal. OP sounds like they have some very bad ableist ideas to get over. Invisible disabilities are a thing so then saying “I’m not even sure she needs it” is ableist as fuxk. Professionals have decided she does. So she does. And depending on where you’re dining table is the kitchen rule is literally on the thin line. Cause the SIL is not gonna want to have to ask everyone to get her a glass of water every time she’s thirsty. But if you’re dining room is in the kitchen then YTA for that. The parts I understand are the basement and the leash on outside. But if she needs a service animal, she needs to have that service animal with her in the bathroom. Or then kitchen if she needs to go there. Some service animals go on the couch of furniture if they need to control a seizure or stop the owner from faking on the floor or dangerous edges when fainting. Would you tell a blind person that their guide dog isn’t allowed? Or someone with a wheelchair that their wheelchair isn’t allowed? It’s almost 2022 people. It’s about time we start to respect invisible disabilities and accommodate them

For Story 2, I'll play devil's advocate and say it's possible the guy sitting behind OP may have been unconsciously stretching out his legs while sleeping; maybe every time OP tapped his foot, he'd rouse himself enough to move his feet, but would again unconsciously stretch out again after sinking back into sleep. My husband has very long legs, and he does this without meaning to when we fly. He's become self-conscious about it to the point where he actively attempts to stay awake on flights now in order to avoid that very situation. However, the guy seated behind OP was definitely TA for being so rude when confronted.
